Bill Martin Jr Library

On September 30, 2000, hundreds of teachers and educators from across the nation converged on the campus of Texas A&M University-Commerce to honor

an American legend. Bill Martin Jr donated his professional library to the university, and the Texas A&M Board of Regents designated a special room in

the Sowers Education South Building to house this unique collection. The collection includes many of his published works; first drafts of manuscripts;

sketches by illustrators Ted Rand, Michael Foreman, and Robert J. Lee and art from many of their books. His honorary degrees and most of his countless

awards are also displayed in the collection.

The Planetarium Show

The A&M-Commerce planetarium located in the McFarland Science Building has

a 40-foot dome and a Digistar 5 all digital projection system that fills the dome

with sights and sounds beyond imagination. The planetarium's 87 reclining seats immerse the audience in a space environment filling their vision and

appearing to take them beyond the confines of Earth.

Patrick Dougherty Installation

World-renowned artist, Patrick Dougherty, designed a site-specific sculpture for our campus. His works are large environmental works made of sticks and

saplings. Deep in the Heart is about Texas, nature, the relationship of the two trees, and the relationships of the artist, students, faculty, staff and community

members that were formed during this process from start to finish.

Authors of Class New Books 2015

The Authors of Class Writing Competition, open to Grades K–8, encourages teams of

students to use their reading, writing, and artistic skills to create books. Under the

guidance of a project coordinator (classroom teacher, parent, student teacher, teacher’s

aide), children work in teams to write and illustrate their own books. This creative

process helps provide a natural environment to practice editing, teamwork, and the

communication skills necessary for future success. All students involved get a sense of

pride and accomplishment from submitting the team project.
