ThePerformance

FINDING SELVES

The 30-minute music and dance performance is a collection of narratives of our unrelenting quest for identity since the beginning of time. For it is from identity that human intention, action and connection evolve. Combining performing arts from the old and the new worlds, this composition takes you through the evolution of our search for life’s meaning. In rhythms, tunes and dance moves of different intensity and velocity, we embark upon an exploration of human emotions – love, rage, remorse, forgiveness, compassion and hope. In richness and uniqueness of artists spanning national borders, cultures and creeds, we will find that one common human purpose and discover the bonds that bring us all together to form one identity for the entire global community. With an impressive ensemble of 31 talents and a breath-taking variety of musical forms and choreographies, the performance essentially aims to inspire a sense of inclusivity among the 11th WIEF participants and stakeholders as the Foundation strives to shape a more equitable world for the betterment of all humanity.

The people behind the show

PROF. DR JOSEPH GONZALESArtistic Director

Born in 1960, Joseph believes that performance practice has made him who he is and has given him everything that he wants and has. He holds strongly to the truth that life is short and death its’ only certainty. He reminds himself only one’s best is good enough in any given time and space. He dreams of an alternative Malaysia, and retains the child-like quality of wonderment and hope. Fueled by passion and driven by a constant feeling of inadequacy, he believes that hard work never killed anyone.

He is a lecturer at the Faculty of Dance at ASWARA, and served as Dean for 17 years, has performed in multiple genres of dance and theatre. He holds a PhD in Dance Studies and Bachelor of Science in Mathematics from University of Malaya, Masters of Arts (Choreography) from Middlesex University, Diplomas in Ballet. Modern Dance and Performing Arts from Bush Davies School, Royal Academy of Dance, Imperial Society of Teachers of Dance, and London Studio Centre, England.

He is Co-Chairman of the Asian Dance Committee, Seoul, South Korea, Vice-President South East Asia World Dance Alliance, and has a career in radio and television working on sports broadcasts and reality dance programmes.

NOURA MINT SEYMALIWorld Musicians, Mauritania

Noura Mint Seymali is a nationally beloved star and one of Mauritania’s foremost musical emissaries. Reared in this transitive culture where sounds from across the Sahara, the Magreb, and West Africa coalesce, Noura Mint Seymali currently drives the legacy forward as one of Mauritania’s most adventurous young artists.

Fueled by the exploratory sound of her husband Jeiche Ould Chighaly’s emotive psych guitar lines, Noura and Jeiche formed their first “fusion” band in 2004. Jeiche, a master of the tidinit (aka. ngoni, xalam), brings the force of yet another important line of Moorish griot to bear, translating the tidinit’s intricate phrasing to a modified electric guitar with heroic effect.

Noura Mint Seymali’s current band is a concise return to the roots, a light formation led by the “azawan,” a word in Hassaniya that refers to the collective ensemble of traditional instruments; the ardine, tidinit, guitar. Backed by a declarative, funk-speaking rhythm section, composed of Ousmane Touré (bass) and Matthew Tinari (drums).

In a rare merger of cultural authority and experimental prowess, Noura Mint Seymali applies the ancient musical traditions of the griot with a savvy aesthetic engagement in our contemporary moment, emerging as a powerful voice at nexus of a changing Africa.

Noura Mint Seymali will be performing at MOCAfest 2015

Dikir is inspired by dikir barat, a traditional folk song and dance from Kelantan, which uses repeated phrases of movements while telling a story. The nature of life is repetitious, a cycle that continues incessantly - until it ends. The choreography draws parallels between this and the journey of everyman/woman who strives for perfection or in a quest of a particular goal.
