Congress Welcome

Dear INDEFI Colleagues,

As Chairman of the Austrian Committee and on behalf of the Austrian Chem-ical Society (Gesellschaft Österreicher Chemiker, GÖCH) I have pleasure insubmitting our proposal to host the 11th World Filtration Congress in Graz,Austria in April 2012.

Our Organising Committee has given considerable thought into making de-tailed plans that we trust will meet with your approval and appeal widely toall concerned with filtration and separation technology. The Austrian Chemi-cal Society has a long tradition in cosponsoring WFC’s and considerable expe-rience in organising major national and inter na tional events. Further more the Austrian Committee can relyupon an excellent and internationally accepted open minded scientific community and reliable industrialpartners. The long established fair City of Graz has been selected as it meets all the requirements for a suc-cessful WFC in every way. It is ideally located to welcome delegates from all parts of East and Western Eu-rope and indeed the entire world. With its long tradition of holding trade fairs and conferences the modernand charming City of Graz with its long and noble history is fore most in providing first class facilities to holda WFC and excellent possibilities for visitor accommodation.

In Graz, a Unesco World Heritage Site, the Mediterranean atmosphere of the Old Town, the striking mod-ern architecture and the great cultural diversity together create a unique and fascinating mix.As Graz is located in a valley surrounded by mountains, with the river Mur flowing through the heart ofthe City you will enjoy its mild spring climate. In 2003 the City of Graz was Europe’s Cultural Capital andit offers delegates and visitors alike a unique experience in art, culture and history in a warm and welcom-ing atmosphere. It is also ideally situated to offer interesting technical site visits within short dis tances. Thenew international airport Graz-Thalerhof with its domestic and international flights is located only 10kmfrom the new Congress Venue. The Central Railway Station has both Austrian and international connectionswith fast and frequent services to the Capital Vienna. The motorways offer easy transit to all parts of Aus-tria and surrounding countries.

Austria has not so far been privileged to host a World Filtration Congress but we trust that you will readour proposals and allow us to have the opportunity of organising a memorable WFC for the world wide F & S community and have the pleasure of inviting you to Graz in 2012.

Sincerely,

Wilhelm HöflingerINDEFI Austrian Delegate

Congress Welcome

The choice of the venue for a conference or congress is determined, to a

very large extent, by the conditions offered by a location. An environment

which is perfect in every respect and a highly professional organizational

management are key factors for the success of an event.

Graz is a meeting point in many ways. As the capital of Styria, it is not only

the infra-structural center and heart of our land. It is, above all else, its people who have made Graz an

open-minded City of international renown, an important business hub, a home of culture, sports and

much more.

Embedded in a prolific academic and scientific environment, combined with a multi-facetted life, Graz is

truly holistic in what it has to offer, attracting hundreds of thou-sands of visitors every year, who take

unforgettable memories home with them.

If you have already visited Graz, you will know what I am talking about, because this city casts its spell

on everyone – allow yourselves to be captivated by the numerous attractions and the charm and beauty

of Styria’s capital City.

A most cordial welcome to Graz

Franz Voves

Governor of Styria

WFC 11 – Graz – Austria 2012

Dear INDEFI Colleagues,

Graz is Austria’s second largest City and is the perfect stage for successful

conferences and exhibitions. On account of its historic centre Graz was de-

clared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. It is also known for its modern ar-

chitecture and art festivals and thus has always been a City of contrasts.

The University, Technical University, Medical University, University of Arts, and

the University of Applied Sciences, together with the public and private re-

search institutions have established Graz’s world wide reputation as a City of

research and science. The City’s brilliant year as cultural Capital in 2003 gave us the opportunity to make

Europe aware of our treasures and Graz has succeeded in bringing many important congresses to our City.

Graz has an ideal infrastructure and offers excellent working conditions, but it also has a wide variety of

choices to spend your leisure time in a most enjoyable way.

We have always been delighted to welcome people and host events from all over the world for the ex-

change of knowledge. We would most certainly like to welcome the 11th World Filtration Congress to Graz

in 2012.

Sincerely

Siegfried Nagl

Mayor of the City of Graz

Congress Outline

WFC11 OutlineThe WFC11 will embrace five days from Mondayto Friday in total. The first day is set aside for tech-nical short courses. The afternoon of the last dayis reserved for post-congress plant tours. The re-maining three and a half days are planned for thetechnical congress and parallel exhibition.

In total about 330 technical presentations withconcurrent sessions and around 150 exhibitorsfeaturing all relevant aspects of fluid-particle sepa-ration are expected.

Proposed Schedule for the Congress Pro-gramme

The WFC11 will be opened with a plenary lecture for a general audience.

The expected 330 papers will be subdivided into6 invited lectures, 200 oral presentations and 130 posters.

Oral presentations will be 25 minutes dura-tion including about 5 minutes for questions

All sessions have the same duration to make it comfortable for participants to change the session, which will be very easy as all congress rooms are nearby on the same floor level. Each session consists of 3 oral presentations.

Following previous WFCs six concurrent sessions (A–F) are planned to cover the expectedpapers, which should be grouped roughly into:

Solid-Liquid-Separation (L) Solid-Gas-Separation (G) Membrane-Processes (M)

The number of sessions can be modified as needed. The Messecenter Graz is flexible enoughto accommodate any additional space require-ments.

There are planned 6 invited lectures of 50 minutes, presented by leading experts, will givereviews and overviews of the state-of-the-art of given technologies or processes. Each invited lecture integrates 2 sessions of the same main group (L, G, M).The invited lectures are spread over the time schedule in a way, that every participant has thechance to hear them.

Posters will be introduced on Wednesday and Thursday by each author in special parallel postersessions by short oral presentation of 5 minutes and presented afterwards in a special session at the posters site. Each poster session contains upto 12 posters. The poster presentation will be continued during the coffee breaks.

You’ll hardly find another City of-fering so much variety in such acompact and manageable space– and with the sun and southernfeel to top it off. The excellent in-frastructure of the venue centrallylocated in the City Centre the pic-turesque Old Town with it’ssouthern charm, the attractivecultural programme, the qualityand diversity of the cuisine.

Old Town –Exuding Southern CharmSince the middle Ages, a friendlyand prosperous town has beengrowing around the Schlossberghill; a town cherished by its in-habitants. In fact, it was theunique ensemble of architecturalstyles spanning from Gothic,Baroque, Renaissance, Art Nou-veau to modernity that made UN-ESCO add Graz to its WorldCultural Heritage list. In the nar-

row lanes, on the bustling plazasand in the tranquil inner court-yards: the relaxed Mediterraneanatmosphere can be felt every-where in this charming city.

Cultural Capital of EuropeGraz is full of contrasts. This isparticularly true of its cultural life. The „Steirische Herbst“, one ofEurope‘s most prestigious festi-vals of contemporary art, enrichesthe cultural scene as much as theclassical culture: opera, theatreand the “styriarte“, the festival ofclassical music that has gained aninternational reputation understar conductor Nikolaus Harnon-

court. In 2003, Graz was a cele-brated and hugely successful Cul-tural Capital of Europe. That yearalso saw the landing of a"friendly alien" in the City, thestriking art centre designed by theBritish architects Peter Cook andColin Fournier. Beside the Kun-sthaus, other high-ranking proj-ects of the celebratory year 2003include the Island in the Mur byVito Acconci, the acoustic won-der venue Helmut-List-Halle, theGraz Stadthalle and the House ofLiterature, all of which contributeto Graz’s lasting attraction as acultural city and event venue.

On the hill (Schlossberg) standsthe great landmark of Graz, the28m (92ft) high Clock Tower builtin the 16th century. The word

"Schloßberg" literally means"castle montain", which de-scribes it exactly. It is a hill toppedby a castle, in the Centre. It is asurvivor of the massive fortifica-tions which was never occupieduntil its partial demolition byNapoleonic forces under thePeace of Schönbrunn of 1809,was once a place of refuge forGraz's residents. It was turnedinto a public park on account ofLudwig von Welden in 1839. Toreach the top of the hill one caneither take the funicular railway(Schloßbergbahn), an elevatorbuilt inside the mountain, or oneof the older sets of pathways andsteps.

The success story of modern ar-chitecture in Graz started around1965 with a rebellion in the Fac-ulty of Architecture in Graz. Twodecades later, the Graz Schoolwas politically supported, innova-tive and very keen on experi-menting. As the Cultural Capitalof Europe 2003, Graz cementedits reputation with a number ofnew buildings: the Stadthalle(civic hall), the, the Kunsthaus(Museum of Contemporary Art)and the Island in the Mur were

Opera House GrazThe Graz Opera, build in 1899,was designed by two of the mostfamous architects of their time,Ferdinant Fellner and hermannHlemer. Particular care was givento create a magnificent baroqueand rococo style auditorium, which is today considered one ofthe worlds’ finest. With the mod-

Grazer KunsthausRight across the river lies the newstriking art exhibition centre Kun-sthaus, nicknamed the “friendlyalien”, an architectural must-seedesigned by renown architectsPeter Cook and Colin Fournier. The intriguing contrast betweenthis futuristic structure overlook-ing the river Mur and the old Cityemblem Clock Tower which dom-inated the Schlossberg is theessence of what has becomeGraz’s trademark: the synthesisbetween tradition and modernity.
