In 2013, all districts will have the opportunity to

support vocational training teams (VTTs) with Rotary

Some districts have expressed disappointment that

However, many districts have had difficulty finding

professionals who meet the program requirements,

forcing the Foundation to grant dozens of exceptions

October is the month of Vocational Service. I amincreasinglyfocusingonhowwecouldmakebetteruseof the huge competences that are represented in our variousvocations.Notnursingour“networkofinspiredindividuals” for the benefit of ourselves, but for thebenefitofourlocalcommunities.

One of my numerous Rotary moments happened the first time I observed a vocational service projectin Finland as the RI President’s representative at adistrict conference. Itwas aprojectnamed “Ticket totheFuture”dedicatedtoyoungpeopleages15-16.Theprojectprovidedthemwithgoodskillsandcompetencesforthebenefitoftheirfuturevocationalcareer.

It isquitenatural thatone of the goals within the strategic priority of Enhancing Public Image and Awareness is to emphasize vocational service. As such, it may contribute effectively to the “magiccircle”: Enhancing public image and awareness leadstomoremembersandagaintomoreserviceprojects, contributingtoanevenbetterpublicimage.

Inmy first year as RC I set a goal to increase thenumberofclubsthatemphasizevocationalserviceandtheir public image. I am not sure that I was entirelysuccessful, sothisyearIrepeatedthegoal.I decided to identify the vocational service profile of the districts anduseanyopportunitytopromotevocationalserviceas a relevant public image tool

IwaspleasedtoreadPresidentSakuji’smessageintheOctoberissueofTheRotarianfromwhereIquote,“The goal of a person doing business is not only to earn a living. The purpose is to be a contributing member of the community, to make the community stronger, and to help make other people’s lives better.”

Wehave to see vocational service and communityservice as awhole. In thatway, our horizonsmay bebroaderthanjustinvitinggoodspeakersfrombusinesslife andnursingourown internal network. LetusnotforgetthatRotaryisServiceAboveSelf–andnot“aboutself.”
