Case Study : “UPS Comperes Globally with Information Technology’

Question :1 What are the inputs, processing, and outputs of UPS’s package tracking system?

Answer: Inputs:

Input data contain detail information about sender destination and shipping and when the package should arrived

scannable barcode label attached to the package. The drivers are given pda’s which contain information about the most efficient delivery

route, taking considerations of the weather & traffic conditions. UPS launched a new web base post-sale order management system that manage globel

service orders and inventory for critical parts fulfillment

Processing :

The transmition of the data from the label to UPS computer centre and later to the distribution centres near its final destinations.

The “340 Methods” for optimizing the performance of every task. the downloading of the driver’s route into the Delivery Information Acquisition

Device (DIAD),which access them to connect to main computer the transmition of UPS package tracking information to UPS computer network for

How are these technologies related to UPS business strategy?UPS’s management is responsible for monitoring service levels and costs and for promoting the company’s strategy of combining low cost and superior service UPS’s business strategy since its inception is to provide “best service and lowest rates”.  In terms of the delivery service, “best service” would entail the successful delivery of the package to the right destination in the shortest time possible.  Therefore UPS uses the advanced information technology to keep track of the shipping and ensuring the successful delivery of the package.

Question :3 What strategic business objectives do UPS’s information system address?Operational excellence:UPS has maintained leadership in small-package delivery services despite stiff competition from FedEx and the U.S. Postal System by investing heavily in advanced information technology. UPS’s deliver 15 M packages and document each day

New products, services, and business models:In June 2009 UPS launched a new Web-based Post Sales Order Management System (OMS) that manages global service orders and inventory for critical parts fulfillment. The system enables high-tech electronics, aerospace, medical equipment, and other companies anywhere in the world that ship critical parts to quickly assess their critical parts inventory, determine the most optimal routing strategy to meet customer needs, place orders online, and track parts from the warehouse to the end user. Drivers take more time to complete the delivery the delivery would be less efficient, taking more time and the possibility of the package

delivered in an unacceptable condition, or not being delivered at all. It’s because of IS that UPS expand globally It’s because of IS that UPS able to offer the supply chain solution to other client

companies. It’s because of IS that UPS able to take packages and other shipment to all over the

world
