A POWER LINE PROJECT

A decision to build up a power line connecting Raul Leoni Hydroelectric Complex at Guriwith northern Brazil could fore shadow Venezuela's future participation in the Mercosur tradegroup, a Brazilian Embassy says.

The Guri dam has the capacity to produce 10,000 megawatts of power. This huge structureset in the copious waters of the Caron River, to the south of Bolivar state, is the essential source

of hydroelectric power generation in Venezuela.Brazilian Embassy economic affairs counselor told the press that the Guri dam is symbolicof the strengthening ties Venezuela has with Brazil. Weve been intensifying economic relationsfor some time now, the official said, adding that Venezuela could become a partner in Mercosurfree trade market.

The president of the Venezuelan-Brazilian Chamber of Commerce is more specific.Some sort of free trade between Venezuela and Brazil is inevitable, he said. Its going tohappen anyway, and better sooner than later.
