A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT

May 2020

On behalf of our entire SDSU family, I want to first offer my warmest and heartfelt congratulations on your graduation! We are deeply proud of what you have accomplished, and the steadfast dedication and commitment that got you here.

I would be remiss if I did not acknowledge that this is a bittersweet moment for our SDSU family. We are indeed in unprecedented times, but together we can rise above the challenges we face, finding meaningful ways to honor our most precious moments with those we care and love.

In academic tradition, our graduation ceremony is referred to as commencement. Today, in many ways, marks a new beginning for you. From this day forward, you are part of San Diego State University’s proud alumni tradition.

You are joining an exceptional family of alumni who are known for leading and serving our region and our nation. They create and build businesses; serve communities as government officials, teach the next generation of leaders; make scientific discoveries and creative contributions; advance innovations in engineering, medicine, law, and many other fields.

Now, as our society faces important challenges, it is your turn to lead and serve. You have worked hard to develop your abilities. Now is the time to put them to use. We are certain that the hard work, intelligence, and perseverance that helped you succeed at SDSU will give you the confidence to take on the future opportunities that await you.

You now begin a new journey, not without obstacles, but with the skills to navigate and help others reach their potential. With your SDSU diploma, you can walk boldly into places and spaces that still need your curiosity, compassion, and courage to tackle the challenges ahead.

We are exceedingly proud of what you have accomplished, who you are becoming, and even more, who you will continue to become. Know that your SDSU family loves you and wishes you continued success as you embark on your next adventure.

With best regards,

Adela de la TorrePresident

A MESSAGE FROM THE DEAN

Dear Graduates,

On behalf of the College of Education, congratulations on this momentous achievement. Today is a chance to celebrate what you — through perseverance and countless hours of hard work — have accomplished, and to imagine what possibilities lie ahead. I hope you relish this joyous moment with all the people who have supported you — even if it can only happen virtually for the time being because of the COVID-19 crisis. Know that when you are finally able to embrace your family, friends, and classmates at our rescheduled in-person ceremony, it will carry all the more meaning. I greatly look forward to that day.

Yet for now, I think it’s important to take a moment to reflect on your journey — to remember the circumstances that both provided obstacles to overcome and shaped the person you are today. For me, that was growing up the youngest of five children in a poor family in Hong Kong, being the first in my family to get a college education, and traveling halfway around the world in the process. You and your classmates have your own unique stories — stories that will invariably be shaped by our current global challenges. But by taking charge of happenstance and seizing opportunities, you made it to this milestone today. Be proud of that.

You will receive a lot of good advice today, but I would be remiss if I did not offer a few words of my own, gleaned from my own professional and personal experience. Here goes:

• Recognize that happenstance need not define you — you have the power of self-agency.

• Don’t get burned out by the additional obstacles you will inevitably face on your journey. Especially now, remember to take time for self-care.

• Seek and follow the advice of mentors, but do so in a way that fits your personality.

• Be willing to say yes to new challenges. Even if you lack confidence, others may see something in you that you do not see in yourself. Give yourself a chance.

• Be courageous, risk-taking and innovative.

I am most honored and gratified to celebrate your graduation with you. I wish you good luck and continued success, and I look forward to seeing you in-person soon.

Y. Barry Chung, Ph.D.Dean, College of Education

A MESSAGE FROM THE ASSOCIATE VICE PRESIDENT

To all of the Graduates in Interdisciplinary Studies,

I write to you on behalf of all who have worked with you on your path to today – those in DAESA, such as Paul Justice and Ian Ruston, those in the various departments who contributed to your intellectual curiosity and, others across our campus who supported you, challenged you and walked with you. Interdisciplinary studies represents the future. Our global society is not unidimensional. The problems and issues of our world are not solved by one idea or one theory but by thinking across disciplines and synthesizing ideas in innovative ways. You are the graduates

who are well suited to move into the job market, graduate programs, and service with the education and the world view to understand how to find creative solutions. You will look forward and not be afraid to look outside the box.

In closing, remember to be what President de la Torre hopes for all SDSU students: global citizens, compassionate leaders, and ethical innovators. For this you are well prepared.

With my best wishes,

Norah P. Shultz, Ph.D.Associate Vice President for Academic Affairs – Student Achievement
