“What You Get”
What does a chapter member receive from our non-profit volunteer organization? A whole lot of “goodies”- a newsletter packed each
month with news, a “bio” of a member, a webpage with a gallery of
member’s art, a Facebook page. “Show & Tell” is an important part of our meeting. We encourage each of you to bring in your current pro-
ject, if you need advice, ideas, etc., we are here for you. During meet-
ings we present cp demos, or watch a DVD, all hoping to give each of you “tips and hints” to help you grow in your knowledge of the cp.
Your board is constantly offing you information about new products
and techniques, and so much more.
All of this is possible because of volunteers ( your Board) working at supporting you, finding exhibition sites, holding workshop, setting up a
library program, etc. We need more volunteers to sustain our chapter
and help it grow. In turn we will all grow as artists.
I must admit, I had never taken art classes, and never joined an organi-zation. BUT when I was introduced to the Colored Pencil, I was in
“love”. I wanted to learn every bit of knowledge, and in 1987, there
was ‘nada’ – except for Bet Borgeson’s “The Colored Pencil”, Key Concepts in Handling the Medium. And guess what? At Bet’s wonder-
ful workshop (filled with people from across the US), Bet announced
that an art society was being formed: the CPSA! I’m sure you’ve fig-
ured out the rest. I wrote to Vera Curnow, saying I wanted to be part of this new organization.
I went from a non-joiner, to getting this chapter founded. I have truly
expanded as an artist and what fun I’ve had!
You are a vital part of this chapter, and I welcome you to our “team”.
Happy Drawing in 2017.
Bobbie

Arnold “Al” Meloche
Arnold (Al) Meloche was born in Nogales, Arizona in 1935. He moved to San Diego in 1949 where he currently resides. He has retired three times. He first retired from a Naval Air Reworks Fa-cility on North Island. But Al could not rest, he decided to go to work for General Dynamics Space, and retired again. Finally he thought he would try something different, so he became a mas-sage therapist. Feeling it was now time to lay his table down, to-day he devotes his time to more creative endeavors of art. He and his wife also enjoy traveling whenever possible.
Al attended college with the hopes of becoming an industrial art teacher. He started at San Diego City College and went on to San Diego State. But that was not enough for Al, he then at-tended National University and has a degree from all 3 schools. While in college he worked in many forms of art: jewelry, sculp-ture pottery, wood carving, painting with oil and acrylics, water color, pencil, and ink. He has won awards in competitions for his sculptures and water colors.
All of Al's art today is influenced by nature's natural product. He carves unique walking sticks and scenes in wood, draws and paints sea shells or anything that ‘Mother Nature’ will let him re-cycle in an art form. He paints scenes and animals on Peacock feathers in acrylics.
He became interested in colored pencils from a class he took at college. Al was thrilled to find that Derwent Water Color Pencils went onto sea shells very nicely and he can then blend his colors with water. He enjoys the CPSA DC 202 meetings where he feels he grows from our mini workshops and from the sharing session at the meeting.
Al is a very active artist, belonging first to the Shelter Island Art Association, where he shows his art on Shelter lsland on week-ends, both Saturday and Sunday. He also belongs to the Claire-mont Art Guild and CPSA DC 202. Currently, he is participating in shows associated with all 3 groups.

DECEMBER BRINGS
It is the end of another year. Time to reflect back. Look at all we are grateful for this past year, 2016. I am grateful for my friends and family who support me being my authentic artist self. I am grateful for the CPSA local as well as national. Being part of this vast and diverse group has really helped me to expand and stay on track with my personal art goals. I learn so much from meet-ings and networking with the attendees. I am grateful for the many mini workshops that were given free, at meetings, so that members might excel at their craft of colored pencils. I can al-ways learn something new. It is my hope I never graduate from the school of learning and discovering. I am grateful for every member’s willingness to share their knowledge and skills. In my 35 plus years of colored pencils I have learned that a vital critique from the most unlikely person has the ability to transform an art project. Stay open and listen, one just never knows who will say the right thing to help you on your path to a successful piece of art. Thinking back on 2016, I am grateful for all the opportunities I have experienced, due to my membership with CPSA, to show my work in a semi professional fashion at local libraries, galler-ies and at our annual show. It has provided exposure of the col-ored pencil as a viable medium for fine art. Also providing me an opportunity for my personal exposure as an artist. I get to prac-tice working as a team to reach a common goal in CPSA. A cornucopia of thanks goes to all board member volunteers. These folks have spent endless hours discussing and planning, meetings, events and teaching sessions to support all members in their growth and love of the colored pencil. Just as much thanks to any other member who has volunteered to help in other ways for the good of the all. I do not want to forget my gratitude for Greg Holtz, our chapter’s Webmaster. He loyally keeps up our website. It is professional looking and easy to navigate. Thank you for your patience and willingness to help. He provides a gallery to show our work on our website too! Thank you. Grateful, yes for you, the “new” member, for without you there would be no group, non of the above. We were all new at one time. Every single person in our group is needed. You are all valuable and have much to offer. I can learn something from a new member as well as a seasoned member, you can too! Finally, thank you all for your support and contributions to our humble, happy little newsletter. I need all of your news, support and feedback. I appreciate you and our common love for the cp! Be happy, Blade♥

THE KAREN PROJECT 1
This is a lovely little gallery in a teaching facility on 30th street. We are happy to get a gallery to enable our group to show the diversity of the colored pencil. That’s colored pencil? Yup, we can do anything you can do and with less mess, well perhaps just a little more time. We love colored pencils!!
Okay, we are on our way with the “Karen Project 2”. There is no stopping us now. Our goal is to have every member complete their project by July 2017. That gives us 7 months to perfect our art work. We will then present our art here, at the Serra Mesa/Kearny Mesa Library, where we meet at our monthly meeting. Go team!
Here are some ‘parts’ still available to the artist that claims them first, and there are more too!
