GOLDEN APPLE AWARD NOMINATIONS BEING ACCEPTEDThe Golden Apple Awards, seeks to honor innovative educators who incorporate community and business collaborations in their classroom. The Golden Apple winners will be honored in May 2014. Each recipient will receive a cash award to be used toward their innovative techniques in their classrooms.

Lori Jones, a 2013 Recipient wrote the following:“Dear Portage County Business Council Foundation, I was a lucky recipient of a Golden Apple last May. …I am a special education teacher for students with cognitive disabilities. I always encourage students to be fit and active. With the money I purchased two bikes – one is a small adult-sized tricycle and the other is a young adult sized recumbent bike. They can be ridden inside or out on the playground. Thank you so much for helping me to purchase these bikes for my students!”

To nominate a teacher or counselor deserving of a Golden Apple Award, contact Bill Christiansen, Director of Foundation at [email protected] for a nomination form. Let our great educators know that their efforts are appreciated and worthy of recognition.

What they have to say \\

For more than four decades, the Stevens Point Area YMCA has been changing and growing in order to meet the unique needs of our community. With one key focus of fighting the epidemic of diabetes, the Y is committed to providing its 7,000-plus members with the most innovative, advanced workout experience available.

As part of that commitment, the Y replaces its cardio equipment every three years, thereby ensuring that members have the most innovative and advanced machines available. What that translates to is something we all want -- a more enjoyable way to get and stay fit.

The latest installment of cardio equipment, Virtual Active™ by Matrix just arrived at the Y and takes working out to a whole new level. The new equipment delivers a revolutionary workout experience that allows members to see their destination in the dynamic video displayed on the consoles of the machines. It’s a full sensory experience where you can feel even a gradual terrain change under your feet and hear the ambient sounds of your chosen experience through your head phones. Imagine running through the lush forests of Hawaii, the majestic Grand Canyon, or the glamorous streets of the Hollywood Hills …

The 54 pieces of equipment, nearly all of which are equipped with their own media screens for TV and web access, also allow members to better manage workout goals and see their success.

But while the new machines would wow any techie, the real benefit is that they allow the Y to better implement important initiatives like its Diabetes Prevention Program. Nearly 79 million people in the United States have a potentially reversible condition of pre-diabetes, and the Stevens Point Area YMCA is dedicated to making a dent in that number.

The Portage Council Business Council has been providing support and resources to the YMCA since 1967. Their leadership to the Portage County business community makes them a important partner of the YMCA. It’s collaborations like this that help make Portage County a healthier place to live.

WOMEN IN BUSINESS LUNCHEON

Governor Walker announced the first round of worker training grant funding opportunities made possible through the Wisconsin Fast Forward legislation he signed into law earlier this year. Wisconsin Fast Forward makes up to $15 million available during the 2013-15 biennium to address the need for skilled workers with demand-driven work-force training. The program encourages employers to develop customized, skilled and semi-skilled labor solutions supported by labor market information. This initial round of Wisconsin Fast Forward Grant Program Announcements (GPAs) makes up to $2.7 million available for competitive worker training grants for the manufacturing, construction, and customer service sectors. Applications for the first round of grants are due later this year. Employers can access the online application, along with instructions and additional details about each GPA, at WisconsinFastForward.com. Department of Workforce Development’s Office of Skills Development (OSD) is administering the grant program and will be the point of contact for inquiries. Moving forward, sector-focused grant program announcements will be released quarterly. Announcements will focus on a variety of industries and reflect input from inquiries made by employers as well as a technical advisory committee for the program.

Anyone can sign up through WisconsinFastForward.com for the program’s newsletter. The newsletter will provide regular updates, including announce-ments of grant awards as well as future opportunities. For more information, contact Scott Jansen, Office of Skills Development Director at the Department of Workforce Development, at [email protected].
