The Divine Mercy

The message of The Divine Mercy is simple. It is that God loves us – all of us. And, he wants us to recognize that His mercy is greater than our sins, so that we will call upon Him with trust, receive His mercy, and let it flow through us to others. Thus, all will come to share His joy.

$ 10,000 to rebuild the foundation of the rectory $ 6,800 to reinforce the floors and walls, and to rebuild two classrooms in the parish school. TOTAL $31,300

This is just the first phase of the recovery efforts. As stated before, the recovery process will take some time. The population of Baradères now exceeds 40,000 people. While we celebrate the good news that the people can get food, we must continue in prayer and in support of the restoration of life as it was before Hurricane Matthew. 100% of your donation goes directly to St. Pierre. Thank you for being as generous as your means permit.

Sister Parish—Road to Recovery During Lent, we collected money for the Secondary School, College St. Jean Baptiste, our Sister Parish High School located in St. Pierre in Baradères, Haiti as a part of our Solidarity. To date, we have collected $23,877.88, about 50% of the funds needed to support the Secondary School for the next school year. Thanks to your generosity this Lent and from the prior collection we had following Hurricne Matthew in October 2016, we wired $158,500 to Baradères! This is a phenomenal amount of money and speaks to our 23-year long relationship with our sisters and brothers in Baradères. Below is a breakdown of the distribution of those funds: School and Parish Budget 2016-17: $97,200

Both the Rectory and the Secondary School thankfully survived the hurricane. However, both suffered some structural damage and need repair. Funds were also needed to help families post Hurricane Matthew: $ 7,000, for 50 families; $140 each, to set-up small businesses to provide for their families. $ 2,800 to buy 50 goats for 50 families $ 4,700 to rebuild the security wall surrounding the College St. Jean Baptiste

Mystic Word

Why are you in church today? Why did you

come? I wonder if people come because they think it’s their duty, because of family ex-pectations, or because it’s a tradi-tion. These are fine reasons, but they miss the mark of what our faith is all about. The Catholic faith is not about membership or family traditions. Rather, it’s pur-pose is transformation. We cele-brate the Resurrection today, and the Resurrection means God wants to change us into something new, holy, and whole. Resurrec-tion means transformation. It is a mystery I would like to probe with the help of a truly great Christian mystic, the medieval German Dominican preacher Meister Eckhart.

Meister Eckhart lived from 1260 until about 1327 in Germany. He was a Dominican priest and was both as highly educated and as highly esteemed as the great Thomas Aquinas. Eckhart was a capable adminis-trator for the Dominican Order and a respected profes-sor of theology at the University of Paris. Because of both his education and his spiritual wisdom he was known in his day and is known in ours as a Master or, in German, Meister. He is remembered primarily, though, for his sermons, which he gave to a mostly lay audience. Eckhart preached many sermons, and these contain the bulk of his radical message of our transformation and unity with God.

In his thirty-eighth sermon, Eckhart preaches,

“If someone were to ask me: why do we pray, why do we fast, why do we all perform our devotions and good works, why are we baptized, why did God, the All-Highest, take on our flesh? then I would reply: in order that God may be born in the soul and the soul be born in God. That is why the whole of Scripture was written and why God created the whole world and all the or-ders of angels: so that God could be born in the soul and the soul in God.”

The birth is how Eckhart describes the change God wants to take place in our lives by raising us up like Jesus. Through the birth, God becomes real for us, alive in our minds and hearts. Birth symbolizes spiritual awakening, becoming Christ, and integrating unity with God into our lives.

As Michael Demkovich, a commentator on Eckhart says, "Birthing allows something that is within to come to life...allows the reality of God that is already in us to come to life in us." Birthing, then, functions as a symbol

of transformation. Through this birth, God unveils our inherent Christ-nature. It is the bringing forth of what is within us – unity with God – into everyday life. This changes us. But, if we are honest with ourselves, we don’t want to change. In general, we don’t like transformation. We are comfortable with our lives as they are, even if we are suffering. If we consider the disorientation we experi-ence when our usual route to work has a detour, we can verify this truth: we don’t like to change. All of us tend to have our own ways of doing things. Admitting this, namely that

we don’t want to change, is the first step to changing. That takes willingness. Eckhart says, “God works…as he finds willingness.” If we are open, we can consent to God changing us. This is what Resurrection means. God takes our lives, if we hand them over, to transform them. Change doesn’t demand heroic effort and willfulness as much as willingness and surrender. This is one of the important wisdom lessons from Jesus’ passion, death, and resurrection.

We can’t do it, but God can, will, and does.

All we can do, according to Eckhart, is get out of God’s way. We must practice detachment, letting ourselves go. Eckhart says, “God is not found in the soul by adding anything, but by a process of subtraction.” God is not asking you to do more church related, pious, or devo-tional things. In Eckhart’s words, “God wants no more from you than that you should…go out of yourself, and let God be God in you.” God will be born in us when we are detached, in a state of letting go and letting be, that is, when we have subtracted selfishness from our lives. Then, God comes alive in us. God becomes obvious to the one who has learned the art of detachment.

We have to remember something, though. It’s not all on us. For Eckhart, the good news is that God is one with us. So, we can change with God’s help if we are but willing. If we are open to letting go of what we want and what we think we need to be happy, then the birth reveals what is has always been true: our radical unity with God. Such is the life of the Resurrection.

Liturgical Ministers: Disciples First

The blending of music ministers and their ministries has

proved to be one of the elements of parish life that is

most helpful in bringing communities together.

Preserving what can be saved from past experience and

combining those riches with new possibilities (e.g.

beginning a children’s choir in the newly merged

parish) shows respect for what

has been and a focus on what the

shared ministry might become.

Music ministers who can

overcome loss, distrust, and

difference to show that they care

for one another and for the

people of the community put

into practice what they sing on

any Sunday. It might take a while to get there, but it

helps if all remember that “liturgical musicians are first

of all disciples, and only then are they ministers… they

are worshipers above all else.” (Sing to the Lord: Music in

Divine Worship, 49) excerpt from Pastoral Music

For more than 125 years, the Salvatorians have

worked to preserve the Church and make Jesus

Christ known to all people. Through peacetime and

social upheaval, through challenges and change, we

remain true to the vision of our founder, Father

Francis Jordan.

Father Francis Jordan

Father Jordan was born June 16, 1848, in Gurtweil, Baden. In 1877, Jordan completed his studies in theology at the University of Baden in Freiburg. After a final year of preparation at the seminary of St. Peter, outside Freiburg, he was ordained a priest on July 21, 1878. Even as he studied, Jordan felt a second call: to found a new movement that would gather Catholic potential and defend and spread the faith. Jordan traveled with other priests to the Middle East. The Holy Land intensified his inspiration and determination to found a new order. When he returned to Rome in 1880, he was ready to act.

Jordan received Pope Leo XIII’s blessing to begin his

new “Apostolic Teaching Society.” Two diocesan

priests, Father Bernard Luethen and Father Freder-

ick von Leonhardi, joined him. And on December 8,

1881, the three celebrated a simple foundation

ceremony.

Father Jordan’s original plan was to found an association

for priests and for laity with varied levels of involve-

ment. Criticism from Church authorities led him to

adopt the more typical format of a religious order,

known first as the Catholic Teaching Society and,

starting in 1894, as the Society of the Divine Savior

(which later became the Salvatorians).
