CLUB OFFICIALS
WELCOME TO LINGFIELD
Good afternoon and welcome to this afternoon’s SCFL Premier Division clash between
Lingfield and Broadbridge Heath. When the two sides met earlier this season at the
Leisure Centre spectators were treated to a thrilling 5-4 victory for Broadbridge Heath
with the Lingers pushing them close until the final whistle.
Our visitors come to us today on the back of some excellent form which has seen them
take 13 points out of a possible 15 over their last 5 games including a 6-0 home win over
Langney Wanderers last Saturday. It’s a chance to welcome back ex Lingfield favourite
Richard Wetton whose goals have helped lift Broadbridge Heath into fifth place in the
table. Let’s hope he’s left his shooting boots at home today!
Lingfield come into today’s game on the back of a very useful 3-0 away win at Arundel last
week, goals from Ben Connolly, Naseem James and TJ Stead taking the points and
moving us up into tenth place. Before that the team successfully negotiated their way into
the next round of the Surrey Premier Cup with a comprehensive 6-1 home win over Old
Wilsonians.
A less successful week for the reserves who exited the Surrey Intermediate Cup with a 2
-1 away loss to Frenches Athletic and a 5-4 away defeat for the Vets at Mile Oak. Good
luck to the Vets for travel to South Park tomorrow to play in the Surrey Veterans Cup.
Enjoy the game!

Lingfield FC was formed in 1893, initially competing in the now defunct Edenbridge & District League for the first 20 years of its history. Throughout virtually all their history the club has re-tained its distinctive red and yellow colours, albeit in a variety of guises. After much success in junior and local intermediate football the club applied to join the Sussex County League (and senior football) in 1980, but were turned down after the ground was deemed inadequate. However, Lingfield had more success with the Combined Counties League, which they joined the following season (1980/81). In 1981/82 Lingfield finished as runners-up in Division Two of the Eastern Division. Lingfield installed floodlights for the first time in 1983 and they were christened with a match on 2nd March against Brighton, a game that drew a crowd of 1,200. With floodlights in place, the club was finally accepted into Division Two of the County League, with the promise of less traveling and more local derbies to look forward to. After three seasons however, they were relegated to Division Three, and intermediate football once more. In 1993/94 Lingfield returned to senior football as runners-up to Bosham, but it proved to be a brief return, with relegation following the next season. In 1997/98 however, the club was promoted once more, this time as champions of Division Three, but again struggled to maintain senior status. In 2000 they finished bottom but avoided the drop, but were not as lucky with an identical finish the following year. 2001/02 saw Lingfield close to dropping out of the League altogether after they finished bottom of Division Three, only to be saved by the merger of Ansty Rangers and St. Francis Hospital to form St. Francis Rangers. The following two seasons however, saw a steady improvement, finishing 3rd in the table (albeit 8 points behind second-placed Bexhill United) in 2004/05. The club also reached the final of the Division 3 Challenge Cup, but lost 1-3 to Rustington. In 2005/06 the Club fulfilled its promise of the previous season by going one better and returning to senior football after an absence of five years as runners-up to champions Peacehaven & Telscombe. Lingfield finished five points clear of third-placed Rustington, but the West Sussex club was once again to prove their nemesis in the Challenge Cup, beating Lingfield 12-11 on penalties af-ter the two sides had drawn 1-1 in normal time. Astonishingly, the shoot-out saw no fewer than 32 spot kicks taken! In 2006/07 the club finished in 10th position but in 2007/08 under manager Steve Perkins Jnr, se-cured promotion to Division 1 for the first time in their history by finishing as runners-up to East Grinstead Town. In their first season in Div 1 in season 2008/09 the club finished in a highly respectable 8th position, under manager Steve Perkins Jnr. In 2009-10 season Lingfield finished in 10th position in Div 1 In 2010-11 season Lingfield finished in 11th position in Div 1 In 2011-12 season Lingfield finished in 7th position in Div 1 In 2012-13 season Lingfield finished in 6th position in Div 1 In 2013-14 season Lingfield finished in 15th position in Div 1 In 2014-15 season Lingfield finished in 17th position in the SECL In 2015-16 season Lingfield finished in 8th position in Div 1 In 2016-17 season Lingfield finished in 5th position in Div 1 In 2017-18 season Lingfield finished in 3rd position in Div 1 and promoted to the Prem Division

CLUB HONOURS
HEATONS CORNER
It was time to get our season back on track as we made the journey to Arundel. We were quite sur-prised to hear that the game was on but it gave us the opportunity to put right our recent poor form. We were travelling without Twiggy & Gravesy but pretty strong otherwise, setting up in our 4-3-3 formation with Bakhit at CB, Jake RW & Bits playing centrally.
The conditions were pretty horrendous especially in the first half, with driving wind and rain coming straight into our faces. We did our best to apply our usual passing game although it was difficult. Arun-del were up for the fight and put in a number of strong challenges especially on Sammy, they picked up a couple of cautions for their troubles. I felt like we were always in control of the game and were able to create 3 or 4 good openings in the first half. Ben Connolly put us ahead after good work down the left hand side from Wilf and we deservedly led 1-0 at the break.
The conditions improved in the second half which meant we lost the advantage of the wind but it helped us settle down. Arundel did well to stay in the game for as long as they did, they struggled to create many clear cut openings so Olly didn't have too much to do although always looked assured. Nas came off the bench for the industrious Bits and killed the game with a great counter attack from Arundel's own corner. Jay Mayhew, also off the bench, cannoned a shot off the crossbar before TJ sealed the win with some questionable goalkeeping.
So a 3-0 win on the road and job done. It was a convincing win from us and hopefully gets us back on track for a busy festive period. We welcome the 'new kids on the block' in Broadbridge Heath to the Lair on Sat-urday. They have signed a host of players from when we played them earlier in the season and have had time to gel; the results look like they are beginning to turn. It will be strange to be facing up against Richie Wetton, a key member of our promotion side last season - he has told me he reckons it will be a comfort-able victory for the Bears, we'll see about that.
Thanks for reading & see you at the Lair on Saturday!

BROADBRIDGE HEATH
Broadbridge Heath Football Club was founded in 1919 by local ex-members of the
armed forces who had just returned from the 1914-18 Great War. In their very first
season of competitive football, with only twelve registered players, the club won the
Horsham and District Championship and Challenge Cup.
In the 1970-1971 season the Horsham League amalgamated with the West Sussex
Football League and Heath joined Division Three. Promotion was won to Division Two
the following season. In the 1978-1979 season, following promotion from the Premier
Division of the WSFL, Broadbridge Heath joined the Southern Counties Combination
League which at that time was a feeder to the Sussex County Football League. The
SCCL amalgamated with the County League in 1983-1984 with Broadbridge Heath
becoming founder members of the new Division Three.
The club moved to its current facilities at the Broadbridge Heath Leisure Centre in Wickhurst Lane in 1987 where they had exclusive use of the stadium pitch, bar and social area. At the end of the 1987-1988 season the club were promoted to senior football in Division Two for the very first time. Heath remained in senior football for 20 years, with one season (1998-1999) in Division One. Despite succeeding on the pitch off the field events deteriorated when the club’s landlord decided not to renew the club’s lease to run the bar and social area and for several years with no home and no assets, the club struggled to survive.
At the end of the 2007-2008 season Heath were relegated to Division Three. Things got even worse for the club when the team finished second from bottom two years later and only avoided demotion because there were not enough clubs in the feeder leagues with facilities to satisfy County League requirements.
The appointment of Steve Painter as First Team Manger saw an improvement in the club’s fortunes. In his first full season as manager (2010-2011) the team finished in 6th position and a year later they finished one place higher behind some very good intermediate sides. As a result of restructuring in the leagues above and despite finishing fifth, Broadbridge Heath were promoted back to Division Two at the end of the 2011-2012 season.
Back in Division Two after a five year break the team finished in 6th position and reached the final of the SCFA RUR Cup where they narrowly lost 1-0 to Division One runners up, East Preston. A year later Painter’s team went even better by finishing the season as runners up to Eastbourne United AFC, and with that promotion back to Division One for only the second time in the club’s history. In the first season back in Division One (now the Premier Division) the club finished 9th, their highest ever finish, and a year later they again finished 9th but had more points, more wins and fewer goals conceded. Last season The Bears continued to improve finishing in 8th position, but the following season, after a good start, they ended the season in 15th place. Steve Painter will be hoping to improve on that position for the 2018-2019 season. Off the field the club’s new facilities are due to be completed by October 2018.
