ANIMAL ADVENTURESK–GR 2 FALL Discover local animals who live in Green Timbers Urban Forest, and use your senses to uncover their unique habitats. Bring your wild spirit and imagination for a themed game and a dramatic story in the great outdoors.

TREE–MENDOUSK–GR 2 SPRINGVenture into the world of trees! Get a closer look and feel of cones, bark, and leaves. Hide amongst the trees in an active animal hiding game, and hear a dramatic tale of tall trees.

PLANT DETECTIVESGR 1–3 FALL & SPRINGBecome a plant detective! Use clues to find out who’s who among Surrey’s native plants, uncover their unique qualities, and discover the roles they play in the lives of people.

MINI ECOSYSTEMSGR 3–4 FALL & SPRINGGet your hands dirty! Use your creativity and imagination as you design and build a mini ecosystem, focusing on a local animal and their role within it. Show off your ecosystem awareness and creative design in a presentation to your peers.

SURVIVING IN THE FOOD CHAINGR 3–7 FALLGet wild with this all-out roleplaying game! Transform into an animal as you forage for food, water, and shelter, all while trying to avoid predators. Customize your program by choosing from natural selection, forestry, or natural disasters to discover their impacts on the food chain. Partly indoors.

ECOSYSTEM FIELD STUDYGR 5–7 FALL & SPRINGCalling all ecologists! Take on a scientific inquiry challenge as you collect field data, analyze your findings, and consider human impacts on biodiversity. Come in the Fall for a forest field study, or in the Spring to visit Green Timbers Lake.

URBAN FOREST 101GR 4–7 SPRINGWhat is an urban forest? Uncover the beauty and challenges of caring for natural areas within a city. Meet local native and invasive species, measure and study a mature tree, and discover forest values through an active hiding game.

UNCOVERING OUR PASTGR 5–7 SPRINGWhose land is this, anyway? Reveal the complex history of Green Timbers Urban Forest as you venture on a clue-collecting tour of the site. Considering logging and conservation, government involvement, First Nations’ interests, and the enduring effects of early settlers, Green Timbers is more than just the birthplace of reforestation in British Columbia!

HALLOWEEN IN THE FOREST K–GR 3 OCTOBER ONLY!Follow the Forest Fairy who will introduce you to the misunderstood creatures of the night! Dare to identify mystery items using only your sense of touch. Optional – add a class set of pumpkins for an additional fee.

January 9 – March 13 Forest Lab is a 2 hour science-based program that takes place primarily indoors. Students take on the role of a scientist, with lab coats, procedures, and experiments.

FOREST LAB – SOIL & PLANTSK–GR 2 WINTERCollect soil samples outside and bring them into the lab to investigate with tools and microscopes. Take a closer look at seasonal growth rings on a real tree, and discover what trees need to survive through interactive play and dress-up.

FOREST LAB – ANIMAL ADAPTATIONS GR 2–4 WINTERBecome an eco-scientist, explore the outdoors and bring your findings inside. Put the scientific method into action as you discover animal adaptations for winter survival, and test out how birds' beaks are adapted to their food sources.

FOREST LAB – FORM & FUNCTION GR 4–7 WINTERBirds and bats – do you really know the difference? Put your inquiry skills to the test in a comparison study of the mechanics of bird and bat wings. Then check out bird and bat skulls, and interpret how their form affects their function.

FOREST LAB – PIGMENTS & PINECONES GR 6–7 WINTERWhy do leaves change colour in fall? What is nature’s “golden ratio”? Find out as you dissolve leaf pigments in a chromatography experiment, isolate the agents of photosynthesis, and discover how Fibonacci’s mathematical spiral shows up on tree cones.
