CM YK 12A THE DAILY STANDARD, Celina, Ohio Thursday evening, September 25, 2014 By COLIN FOSTER [email protected] When the lopsided score of the Fort Recovery-Delphos St. John’s game was announced over the loud speakers at Cavalier Stadium in Coldwater last Fri- day, it sent a shockwave throughout the bleachers. Indeed, the Indians’ 39-7 win over Delphos St. John’s — a perennial foot- ball powerhouse ranked sixth last week in the Division VII state poll — came as a surprise to some people, perhaps even the Fort Recovery faithful. But that victory and what the Indians have accomplished to this point have been no fluke — the numbers and results don’t lie. “Going into the (St. John’s) game, we really felt like we had a good chance to beat them, based on what we felt we could do and what they’ve looked like this year,” said Fort Recovery coach Brent Niekamp on the day his Indians were ranked eighth in the Division VII state poll. “But we knew they would play really hard and they would be very well coached, which they were. We also figured it would be a fight. “I think, to be honest, we surprised ourselves a little bit. That’s like another revelation to ourselves that, you know, we’ve got a chance to be pretty good if we keep our focus and keep getting bet- ter every week.” This week, Niekamp’s bunch travels to play Midwest Athletic Conference foe Parkway (0-4, 0-2) at Panther Stadium and will try to avenge a 43-14 loss at the hands of the Panthers from last season. “They have some athletes who are definitely capable of causing some trou- ble,” Niekamp said. “One thing that’s hard to gauge with Parkway is they have four losses but of all the teams that beat them, there’s only two losses between those teams. That means they’ve been playing some pretty good teams. I think they’re a little bit better than their record shows.” We’ve played a tough schedule,” Parkway coach Dan Cairns said. “One thing that I know we really have to improve on is just fundamental stuff, blocking, catching, throwing, and tack- ling, too. Those are the things that have been hurting us in the first four games — fundamental stuff.” Fort Recovery, a school that has nev- er reached the playoffs, has roared out to a 3-1 start this year and is ranked atop the Division VII, Region 26 playoff standings. Right behind the Indians is reigning MAC champion Marion Local, whom they will host in Week 8. The Fort has outscored opponents 113-60 in the first four weeks and has posted wins against North Union (26-19), Jay County (28-0) and St. John’s. The Indians’ lone loss came against Anna in Week 3, a 34-20 setback on the road. “I think our kids, week-by-week, are feeling a little more confident in their ability and what we’re able to do and hopefully what we’ll be able to accom- plish throughout the course of the sea- son,” Niekamp said. “I think we were kind of hopeful at the start, and with each win or achievement, I think we start to understand a little bit better that our ceiling could be pretty high. That’s exciting for everybody.” A balanced and diverse offensive attack has been a key to the Indians success. Fort Recovery’s rushing attack has been paced by Cole Hull, who has racked up 67 attempts for 523 yards and six touchdowns. Kyle Schroer has also been a lethal threat in the backfield, amassing 252 yards and scoring two touchdowns. Quarterback Caleb Mar- tin has passed for 567 yards and five touchdowns compared with four inter- ceptions. The leading receiver is Wes Wenning, who has 16 catches for 235 yards and three touchdowns, including a 98-yard scoring catch against the Blue Jays. “They’re very versatile in terms of running and throwing the ball. They can do both,” Cairns said. “They’re very multi-formational, which can cause a lot of problems for you as a defense, because you have to prepare for, I don’t know, I can’t even tell you how many formations we came up with. “That’s an issue because they forma- tion you to death. They can run just about any of their base plays out of each formation and, like I said, they’re pretty adept at throwing just as well as running and they’ve got some nice skill players.” The Parkway offense has produced 18 points over its last three games. The Panthers have lost four games to open the season against opponents who have a 14-2 record (Crestview, Arlington, St. Henry and Anna). The road won’t get any easier for the Panthers, either. After playing the Indians, they travel to take on Coldwater (4-0) and Versailles (3-1) before hosting St. John’s in Week 8. Hayden Abromavich and Justin Bar- na have been competing for the starting quarterback job. Abromavich played much of the second half in a loss to St. Henry during Week 3 and led the team on a touchdown drive. Thus far, Abro- mavich is 15-of-32 passing for 171 yards with a touchdown and an interception. passed for 232 yards and one touchdown. Cairns said they are still trying to figure out who can deliver the spark they need at the position. “Hayden and Justin both bring a different set of skills to the table,” Cairns said. “One’s weakness is the other one’s strength. Honestly, we’re look-ing for somebody to get hot and someone to ignite us a little bit. Our plan this week is to again let those two battle it out.” Leading the team in rushing are Barna (33 carries, 117 yards), Sage Dugan (26, 110 yards) and Cody Coffman (21, 101 yards). Coffman is also leading the team in all-purpose yards with 314. The top pass catcher for the team is Kevin Flaugher, who has eight receptions for 131 yards

and a touchdown. Flaugher leads the defense with 29 tackles — two of them for a loss. Dugan has contributed 21 1⁄2 tackles and has four tackles for loss. “It’s hard to get a good feel for them offensively,” Niekamp said. “They do a lot of different things. I think they’re looking for what they’re going to be able to do well. They had the Barna kid starting out the year for them. Now they have (Abromavich) and he’s a nice looking athlete. He looks a little more mobile may-be. He’s a senior and he’s prob-ably going to be able to play with some grit and determination. I think that’s what we’re going to have to be ready for.” Parkway has won the last three out of four games in the series, including a 36-35 over-time victory in 2011 on the road.
