The Truffle Market is the beating heart of the Fair dedicated to the White Truffle of Alba, the place where you can really get to know the Truffle by submerging yourself into a unique, heady atmosphere. Every Truffle on sale is checked by a Commission before the Market is opened to the public, and the group of experts remains on hand inside the pavilions to act as a consumer information service. In the Market, lots and lots of Truffles sold directly by reliable traders and truffle hunters can be perused, sniffed and touched.The large area housing the Truffle Market will also play host to the stands of the AlbaQualità food and wine show featuring the wines of the Langhe and Roero, the delicacies of the local artisan patisserie, and the cheeses, egg pastas, cured meats and various products which have made our area international. And for all lovers of the great local cooking, a stopover in the food service section inside the Fair pavilions will certainly be something to treasure

A journey in the company of chefs and Regional Enotecas giving the chance to taste, glean information, listen to their stories and ask questions. Designed for anyone who would love to find out more about our premium local produce, its origins and how to cook it.Saturday after Saturday a local cookery theme will be matched with a great wine from the Langhe and Roero: egg pastas, Piedmontese meat, traditional salted fish, the PDO cheeses of Piedmont, sweets.

Foodies Moments JuniorHands onFree cookery courses for children (3 - 14 years of age), getting kids involved in discovering local products, understanding the importance of a healthy diet, appreciating food and taking an interest in its preparation through hands-on experience.

A heady, intense aroma, a unique and extraordinarily rich scent, as well as a great allure and an aura of mystery. This is the Tuber magnatum Pico, better known as the White Truffle of Alba, the most highly-prized of fungi.Scientifically-speaking the truffle is an underground mushroom, but for the nose of the gourmet it is above-all a peerless aroma. How do you go about choosing a truffle though? What’s the best way to appreciate them? How should they be kept? And how should you eat them? An expert in Sensory Analysis from OIAT (the International Truffle Tasters Association) will reveal all the secrets through not-to-be-missed sensory and smell tests. This mini truffle tasters course will provide basic information on mycology and the tools required for a correct approach to a considered tasting of the truffle.

This is the most original tasting you can take part in in the Langhe: every weekend, expert winemakers and sommeliers will lead you on a journey through the variety of local wines and labels, revealing their characteristics and curiosities. During the International Truffle Fair, Wine Tasting Experiences will be hosted in Alba’s Hall of Taste every Saturday (in English) and Sunday (in Italian) at 4 pm: you will be able to taste Barolo DOCG, Barbaresco DOCG and many of the other premium products making up the extraordinary winegrowing heritage of the Langhe and Roero.Each tasting will last one hour. On the first Sunday in October the nine districts of Alba compete in a donkey race for a silk cloth - the Palio - painted this year by Paolo Galetto. The Palio race is preceded by a grand procession through the streets of the town with a cast of more than a thousand, including noblewomen, knights, soldiers, commoners and peasants, amidst blasting trumpets, rolling drums, standards and flags.When they enter the arena in piazza Osvaldo Cagnasso, each district acts out a historic episode relating to the Middle Ages: battles, sieges, acts of banditry, marriages, religious festivals, alliances. The race itself is made up of two heats and a final, while the draw for the donkeys takes place in the morning in piazza Risorgimento.

Saturday 19 and Sunday 20 October see the return of the Truffle Bacchanal and the Mediaeval Fair, two appointments packed with appeal and tradition. The town presents itself once more in its splendid mediaeval guise, with visitors welcomed by torchlight to enjoy the music, flavours and aromas of days gone by. There will be no lack of traditional dishes to taste while figures in period costume animate the town, taking you back in time.

THE PLACE OF TASTE AND AROMAS THE DAY OF THE TRUFFLE DOG

The truffle dog’s tireless dedication is celebrated each year with an international fair. The dog may be seen as playing a supporting role in the truffle hunt, but it is actually without doubt the real architect of this piece of magic. It matters little whether the dog has a pedigree or not: sniffing out the precious tuber is a natural talent, and we want to pay our respects.The day will see the Final of the “Truffle-hunt in the ring” dog trials, where the enterprise of the dog and its legendary symbiosis with its master - the trifolao or truffle-hunter - will be on display. The trials are the final in a series of events being held in Roddino (CN) - 27 July, Neive (CN) - 1 September and Sommariva Perno (CN) - 22 September.On the same day it will be possible to experience the hunt itself first-hand with the trained dogs of Roddi’s Truffle Dog University. The University’s professional trainers will also be on hand to test the aptitude of your dog for the search. Why not give it a go? The talent may be waiting to be revealed in the humblest of mongrels, as well as the most petulant of poodles! An ideal day out for children who can try their hand at being a truffle-hunter, and see the dogs at work.

The Truffle of the yearIn the 1930s Giacomo Morra - the original promoter of Alba’s Truffle Fair - invented the tradition of sending the finest specimen each year to an illustrious personality from the worlds of politics, sport and entertainment. Among the recipients were Rita Hayworth, Marilyn Monroe and Winston Churchill. During the decade running from 1958 to 1968, another legendary truffle trader, Roberto Ponzio, also sent splendid truffles to leading figures, including Queen Elisabeth and President Charles De Gaulle.More recent editions have seen many celebrities visit the town in person to collect the “Truffle of the year”. They include Luciano Pavarotti, Prince Albert of Monaco, Gérard Depardieu, Sophia Loren, Alain Delon, Marcello Lippi, Sergio Marchionne, Francis Ford Coppola, the actress Penelope Cruz, and last year CLAUDIA CARDINALE (photo).

The “Maestros” of “Bere il Territorio” encounter the Truffle Fair“Bere il territorio” (Drink the territory) is the title of the national writing competition which has been sponsored for more than 12 editions by the Go Wine association.It sets out to promote a positive culture around the consumption of quality wine, and is aimed above-all at the younger generations with general sections and special prizes.For over 10 years, an award has been made during the prize-giving ceremony to a “Maestro”, or mentor. In other words, major figures in Italian culture who can be a focal point for younger people, or testify to a particular relationship with the identity of the places and material civilization that distinguish them from others.Over the years the award has been presented to Luigi Meneghello (recently passed away), Niccolò Ammaniti, Claudio Magris, Lorenzo Mondo and Gianmaria Testa, Sebastiano Vassalli, Dacia Maraini, Alberto Arbasino, Enzo Bettiza, Franco Loi and Francesco Guccini.During the 2013 edition of the Truffle Fair, the “Maestros” will meet up together in Alba for an extraordinary day of culture and taste.
