303rd BG (H) Combat Mission No. 8813 December 1943

December 13th’s mission represented an "all-out" VIII Bomber Command effort witha record number of aircraft dispatched. It also was a record 303rd BG(H) effort.

One aircraft in the 303rd BG-A Group was abortive. #41-24577 Hell's Angels,358BS (2Lt. H.F. Glass), lost its No. 3 supercharger at the start of the climb over England.After reaching altitude, the No. 4 engine was leaking oil. When approaching the target, theNo. 4 engine lost oil and the engine couldn't be feathered. The aircraft aborted about 30miles off the German coast.

Moderate to intense accurate flak was encountered over Don Helden at the enemycoast. Meager inaccurate flak was seen in the target area. Neither 303rd BG(H) formationsaw any enemy fighters. Fighter support was excellent. Contrails made it difficult for pilotsto fly good formation and for other crewmen to make observations.

The target area was 10/10ths overcast. Contrails restricted visibility. Bombing wasaccomplished from 28,500 feet, (A Group). The lead B-17 #41-24635, did not drop anybombs because the PFF flares signaling "bombs away" were not seen until the formationhad passed the release point. Aircraft #42-37841 also didn't drop its bombs and aircraft#42-5854 dropped bombs on the Texel Airdrome as a target of opportunity. Other aircraftdropped their bombs when B-17 #42-29894 released its bombs. The 303rd BG(H) "B"Group dropped its bombs on signal from the lead PFF B-17. Most aircraft carried 42M47A1 incendiary bombs except three that carried 36 incendiaries plus two boxes of G18and G19 leaflets.

Aircraft #42-29894, Baltimore Bounce 359BS (Lt. Daub), experienced oxygenproblems. Lack of oxygen caused the navigator, 2Lt. Charles P. Carroll, to pass out andresulted in the death of T/Sgt. John J. Barrett, engineer. There were no other casualtiesand no aircraft losses, although six aircraft sustained minor damage, five by flak and oneby friendly fire.

Major Cole gave the following version of the "A" Group mission: "The flak wasintense, but not very accurate. We didn't see an enemy fighter. Those P-47s werewonderful. They gave us the best possible protection." Maj. Snyder's "B" Group remarksincluded: "Can't say a thing about the bombing, although I did see two tremendous puffsof black smoke come up through the clouds. I didn't see any enemy fighters."

2Lt Vern L. Moncur

This was the first mission for the 359th BS 2Lt. Vern L. MoncurCrew. Lt. Moncur kept a journal and maintained a detailed record ofeach of his crew’s 28 missions. The Moncur Crew flew five differentB-17s on their first six missions. They were then assigned to the nowfamous B-17G #42-38050 Thunderbird for the balance of theirmissions. Servicemen who kept journals were not allowed to takethem home upon discharge, however they were allowed to wrap andaddress them to be mailed home later. Some Moncur Journal entriesare included with the appropriate missions.

Date: December 13, 1943

Target: Submarine Pens, Bremen, Germany

Altitude: 30,000 feet

Plane: T-561 "The Duchess"

Position: No. 2, Lead Squadron

This was the first mission for all of us. Fortunately, the trip turned out to be a fairly easy one,

in spite of plenty of excitement at times. We encountered flak on our bomb run and over the target

area. The flak was moderate to heavy and fairly accurate. Since this was the first time we had ever

seen flak, we didn't realize just how dangerous it really could be. The first time you see it, it sort of

fascinates you. You wonder how that harmless looking black puff could possible hurt you or your

plane. It didn't take us long to change our minds! No fighter opposition was met by our group. The

P-47s gave us perfect protection around the target and on our withdrawal.

The crew got along fine, though we had a few minor troubles which could have been

disastrous had prompt action not been taken. Sgt. Baer, left waist gunner, passed out from lack of

oxygen soon after we left the target. The intake valve on his mask had frozen solid, preventing him

from getting enough oxygen. We broke away from the formation and descended rapidly to 11,000

feet.

He soon recovered and felt all right. Sgt. Dickman , right waist gunner, also passed out

temporarily from lack of oxygen as he attempted to revive Sgt. Baer. S/Sgt. Andrus, radio operator,

experienced the same thing because of a frozen oxygen mask. The temperature was 50 degrees

below zero.

We had trouble releasing our load of bombs because of the intense cold which froze the

bomb bay door release mechanism. The doors were finally opened by Lt. Chang, but the bombs

were dropped by the pilot's release after it became impossible for the bombardier to release them.

On this raid we carried 42 one-hundred pound incendiary bombs.

The No. 2 supercharger went out of commission as soon as we reached altitude and very

little power was available from that engine. The No. 1 oil pressure dropped very low - to about 45

pounds. However, both engines operated well enough to keep us in formation and, fortunately, it

was unnecessary to feather the engine.

Though we had to leave formation soon after releasing our bombs over the target, we were

able to rejoin our own squadron before we reached the English coast. There was no injury to any

member of the crew and no battle damage to the a irplane. Incidentally, this plane, "The Duchess,"

was the plane in which Lt. Jack Mathis , bombardier from Texas was flying when he was killed. For

his actions and performance of duty, Lt. Mathis was posthumously awarded the Congressional

Medal of Honor.
