STORY:
The Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General (SRSG) for
Somalia, Nicholas Kay, has made his first visit to Garowe, Puntland since he assumed
his duties as head of the United Nations Assistance Mission in Somalia (UNSOM) on
June 3, 2013.
He met with Puntland President Abdirahman Mohamed Farole and other
government officials at the State House where they had discussion. SRSG Kay saidthat Puntland has played a key role to end the transitional period for Somalia and
that he looked forward to its continued positive contribution support in the post-
transition, peace-building phase.
In his meeting with President, SRSG Kay explained UNSOM’s mandate which
supports the building of national capacity, peacebuilding, good governance, security
sector reform, rule of law, human rights, providing “good offices” for mediation and
political reconciliation and coordination of international assistance.
“Part of the UNSOM mandate is to assist with peace building and to assist theSomalis with the creation of a Federal State,” said SRSG Kay, “And I have come today
to hear the advice and the wisdom from president Farole on those subjects and
we’ve had an excellent discussion and I am sure that together the United Nations
and all parties within Somalia will work closely to make a better future for everyone.”
While in Garowe, the head of the UN in Somalia took the opportunity to handover
the Attorney General and Judicial Council offices both built as part of the UNDP
‘Access to Justice’ Project.

computers and printers is an important part of it.”
SRSG Kay will meet with the Speaker of Puntland Parliament, members of civil
society and the Transitional Puntland Electoral Commission. With local council
elections in Puntland scheduled for 15 July, he expressed hope that the local
elections would be conducted peacefully. UNSOM will have a permanent office in
Garowe that will engage the administration and civil society on all matters relating to
the UN mandate.
