1335 Friday 4 September 2015 Dear Members of the Loyola College Community, There have been many highlights in the last fortnight that I am delighted to share with you in this edition of the Ignatian. Meeting of Jesuit and Companion Schools I recently attended the second meeting for this year of principals of the schools in Australia which belong to the Ignatian or Jesuit network. The meeting was held at St Aloysius in Sydney over two days. We discussed ways of further strengthening the ties amongst our nine schools with a view to further developing opportunities for our staff and students across a range of areas including formation of staff in the Ignatian charism, leadership development and combined activities. A Day in the Life of Loyola College On Thursday of last week the College ran a program for the Year 4 students in our feeder Catholic primary schools. All seven Catholic schools were invited to attend and we thank the four schools who were able to accept our invitation: Our Lady of the Way, Kingsbury, St Thomas the Apostle, North Greensborough, Sacred Heart, Diamond Creek, St Francis of Assisi, Mill Park. The children had a wonderful morning and were able to see a secondary school in action, attend some classes and complete some activities as well as meet some of the children who had previously attended their own school and learn more about Loyola College. The College feels that such experiences help the children in their transition to secondary school regardless of where their families decide to send them. We are very pleased to be able to offer this experience to the children of our feeder Catholic primary schools. Library Week Last week a number of activities were held to celebrate Library Week in the iCentre which was beautifully decorated to emphasise the importance of libraries in learning. I thank Ms Do our Head of Learning Resources and all the library staff for organising the activities and events. Father and Daughter Breakfast This year’s Fathers’ Day Breakfast was again a great success and fully booked out. Following the breakfast there was a prayer service in St Ignatius Chapel led by Fr Gerry Healy SJ. I thank Ms Chapman (Food Technology Assistant), Mrs Pritchard (Canteen Manager), Ms Fox and Ms Rinaldi, who prepared the breakfast and the VET Hospitality students who served.

Working Bee A large number of families attended the final working bee for this year. The focus was preparing the grounds for the Open Day which will be held on Sunday 13 September. A great deal of work was carried out thanks to the generosity of so many. I thank Mr Maurice Gonella who oversees the organisation of the day together with Mr Kelly our Head Gardener and Mr Short, Assistant Gardener. College Memorial Mass for Mr Chirico A College Memorial Mass to celebrate the life of Mr Chirico will be held on Thursday 10 September in the Loyola Companions Hall at 12.20pm. Parents and guardians are welcome and are asked to contact the College RSVP Line 9433 0259 to indicate their attendance. Early Dismissal Students will be dismissed at lunchtime on Friday 11 September to allow staff to prepare the grounds for Open Day that will be held on the Sunday of that weekend. Appointment of New Deputy Principal ~ Teaching and Learning It is with pleasure that I announce the appointment of Ms Suzanne Pola to the position of Deputy Principal ~ Teaching and Learning from the commencement of the 2016 school year. Ms Pola has held a number of leadership positions during her time at Loyola including Head of House and Head of Faculty. She has served on a number of significant committees and has made an important contribution to the life of the College in these roles. Further to her undergraduate studies Ms Pola completed her Master in Education in 2011. We congratulate Ms Pola and wish her well as she assumes this important role in the College. Performing Arts Centre Construction has well and truly commenced on this long awaited facility. The Builders, Ireland Brown, have been on site for over a month now. I have attended a number of site meetings and progress on construction is going well. The anticipated completion date is July 2016. Fathers’ Day We wish all dads a Happy Fathers’ Day for next Sunday. It is a time to express gratitude for all that fathers bring and do for their families. We look to the example of St Joseph who cared for Jesus and Mary under very challenging circumstances. We pray for his protection and guidance of all fathers as they carry out the important role of parenting. As mentioned earlier, next Sunday we have our Open Day, an opportunity to showcase our wonderful College to the community and to attract future enrolments. The day represents in many ways a mosaic of everything that binds the College together and makes Loyola an educational community rooted in Christian faith and hope following the example of our patron Ignatius. FROM DEPUTY PRINCIPAL (IGNATIAN MISSION & IDENTITY)

Year 9 Reconciliation What is the image of the Sacrament of Penance in contemporary society? Older Catholics remember going to confession weekly at primary school, making things up when they couldn’t think of what sins to confess or being mortified when the priest called them by name or finished absolution by asking them to say hello to mum or dad ~ so much for anonymity! Comedians such as Dave Allen would send it up with comedy routines set in the confessional box with the sliding window.

In a sense it is an unfashionable sacrament with fewer Catholics adhering to the Church’s recommendation that they should participate in the Sacrament at least once a year. Is it because people now go to a counselor, General Practitioner or a trusted friend when they have a problem? The reasons for the change in practice are complex but include the increasing secularization of society, a decrease in traditional religious practice, a change in people’s attitudes to the subject of sin which is reflected in preaching and general Catholic talk.

At the College we do not have a sliding door confessional box. Our Year 9 Religious Education classes study a unit on Reconciliation that explores the reality of our sinfulness, the need for healing, the history of the Sacrament, current practice and the benefits of the Sacrament. The emphasis is on the need to restore damaged relationships with friends, family, self and to be open to Jesus’ ever~present invitation to live a life of love and closeness to God.

All Year 9 students participate in a Reconciliation Liturgy and have the opportunity to talk to a priest and receive a blessing. Catholic students can receive the Sacrament. It is a very personal experience of Church for our young people and by

and large it is a very positive experience for them. This sacramental program has been wonderfully supported by our Parish Clergy, Fr Gerry Healy SJ and Fr Dave Ryan SJ.

Saint Vincent de Paul Winter Clothing or Food Appeal Loyola families have traditionally been great supporters of the St Vincent de Paul Winter Clothing, Blankets and Food Appeal.

The items are being collected in House areas by members of the Loyola Young Vinnies conference and through some Religious Education classes.

FROM COLLEGE ARCHIVIST

The Growth of Loyola 1979: The Jesuits made available 12.7 acres of their land and the new secondary school planned for the area was named Loyola College in acknowledgment of their generosity. 1980: The first buildings were portables donated by St Mary’s Greensborough. Work began on A~Block almost immediately and it was occupied by October. 1982~3: B~Block, including laboratories, a library and classrooms, was ready for use early in 1983. Basketball courts were constructed and the oval was levelled. 1984: A Government grant was sought to build L~Block which was completed in 1985 with classrooms for senior students and computer and drama rooms. 1990~2: The Chapel of the Irish Martyrs arrived from Arthurs Creek, a gift from the parish of Diamond Creek. In March 1992 it was officially blessed and opened with the Performing Arts Centre which was built during 1991. 1993~4: 4.5 acres of land along Grimshaw Street allowed the extension of the oval and creation of a soccer field. An unsuccessful bid to acquire the Jesuit monastery was made and 37 McKellar Street was acquired. 1997: Portables (N~Block) arrived in 1997 and were used as

offices and for the Year 12 students. A project began that included a Technology and Visual Arts building (Q~Block) and extensive grounds and sporting improvements. Q~Block was blessed and opened in

1998. The next year L~Block was refurbished to become the administration center of the school.

Camps, Sports and Excursions Fund (CSEF) The Camps, Sports and Excursions Fund (CSEF) is a new initiative provided by the Victorian Government to lower income families. It will be run over 4 years and provide payments for eligible students to attend camps, sports and excursions. Families with a child under 17 who hold a valid Health Care Card, Pension Card or are a temporary foster parent as at the first day of Term 3, may be eligible to receive the CSEF. Parents who receive a Carers Allowance on behalf of a child, or any other benefit or allowance not income tested by Centrelink, are not eligible for the CSEF unless they also hold a valid Health Care Card, Pension Card or are a temporary foster parent. The amount payable for Secondary school students is $225.00. This will be paid to Loyola College for all eligible parents and will be applied against the Global Fee on the Fee Account which incorporates all camp and excursion costs. Application forms should be completed and must be lodged with the College no later than Tuesday 15 September 2015 Application forms are available for download on the College website (www.loyola.vic.edu.au/information/csef application form) or at the College Office.

FROM DEPUTY PRINCIPAL (STUDENTS)

As a community we continually encourage our students to regularly contribute to the Ignatian Newsletter. We see this as an opportunity for them to give their perspective about events that

have occurred in the College. This fortnight we have articles from members of the College Committee and Loyola Student Council. FROM XAVIER HOUSE CAPTAINS

Xavier House News Xavier House has had a promising 2015 so far, achieving fourth place in House Eisteddfod and third place in House Athletics, and a great effort in both the Swimming Carnival and Cross Country. We could not have achieved these things without the wonderful House spirit of the Xavier students and the determination of our Head of House, Mrs Devlin.

Other highlights of our year have included a visit from Fr Jeremy Clarke, the Director of Jesuit Mission on Monday 20 July, which allowed students to learn about the projects in which any Xavier House donations will directly contribute to. Our celebration day of our Patron Saint, St Francis Xavier, with a liturgy, on Monday 27 April. Additionally, a large portion of Xavier students and staff were involved in the Xavier House video, created by Year 11 students Jessica Abbott (XJBI) and Natalie Berkman (XMAC), which was a great way to celebrate our House pride. We have also enjoyed holding Xavier bake sales for our House Charity, Jesuit Mission, which have been run by our hard working parents.

We are currently in the midst of our Senior House Debating and Public Speaking, with our team and speakers working incredibly hard to prepare their speeches.

In the coming weeks, we look forward to continuing to raise funds for our House charity as well as celebrating the results of House Debating, House Public Speaking and House Chess. We have thoroughly enjoyed working so closely with our House this year, and promoting the Xavier spirit in our daily lives. FROM CHISHOLM HOUSE CAPTAINS

Chisholm House Baby Goods Drive On Monday 17 August, members of the Chisholm House Committee were extremely fortunate to visit and volunteer at

the Caroline Chisholm Society in Essendon. Each year, Chisholm House provides vital funds for this charity as they have very little government assistance, and thus rely heavily on donations. Along with raising money, this year we decided to continue our Baby Goods Drive, as it has been very successful in previous years. Working alongside St Mary’s Primary School, we were able to raise goods such as baby clothes, nappies, toys and prams in order to support the work that the Caroline Chisholm Society does for women and children in need. On the day, we had the opportunity to deliver a trailer and bus full of baby goods to the Society. We were also able to assist with sorting and storing clothes, toys, prams, bassinets and a vast array of baby items. It was wonderful to see firsthand that the donations and money we raise go to such a worthy cause and the huge impact that we can all make on another person’s life. It has been wonderful to see the amount of support we have had from both the students and staff of Loyola College and in particular Chisholm House, as well as St Mary’s Primary School. This year has been the biggest donation that Chisholm House has seen, and for that the Caroline Chisholm Society is very grateful. On behalf of our Head of House Mr Valentino, our mentors and the whole of Chisholm House, we would like to extend our gratitude and thanks to all the families, staff and students that helped us in our fundraising efforts this year.

Year 12 Academic Conversation The final Year 12 Academic Conversation will take place on Thursday 10 September (3.45~6.30pm) in the same rooms as all other Academic Conversations. This will be your final formal opportunity to discuss your child’s progress prior to the final examinations. Parents and guardians will receive a comprehensive booklet outlining Year 12 specific subject advice for them to use to support their child as they approach the final weeks of Year 12 and prepare for the VCAA examinations.

The Year 7~11 Academic Conversations will be held on Thursday 8 October (2.30~8.00pm). Letters outlining the booking system will be sent to parents and guardians later this term. Please be aware that this round of reports are sent home prior to the interviews.

Review of Academic Conversation Program Thank you to all parents who completed the online feedback on the Academic Conversation program. We appreciate your honest and thoughtful comments. We will now collate the data and have further discussion with staff. We will keep the parent community informed of the ongoing discussion.

Unit 4 Trial Examinations A reminder that all students studying a Unit 4 subject will have a trial examination in all of their subjects over three days in the term three holidays. The students will have received a copy of their trial examination schedule via their school email. If there are any issues with the timetable, the student should contact Ms Staub. The trial examinations commence on Friday 25 September and conclude on Tuesday 29 September. This schedule allows enough time to prepare for the trial examinations, as well as undertake other revision for their subjects. Parents and guardians will receive an individual statement of trial examination results following the correction of all papers. This report will be sent out in the mail on Thursday 8 October.

Loyola College Scholarship Program 2015 As we all know Loyola College is always proud to acknowledge and celebrate the achievements of its students as they strive for excellence. One special way in which excellence and endeavour is recognized is through the awarding of College Scholarships. The value of each scholarship is $400 which is deducted off school fees for the 2016 academic year and are awarded in the following categories:

Ten Academic Scholarships Two Co~curriculum Scholarships Two Personal Endeavour Scholarships The LPFA Michael Cusack Memorial

Scholarship for Community Service

The Scholarship Program will recognise and acknowledge students currently in Years 7 to 11 that take responsibility for, and are proactive in the development of their own education. These Scholarships are generously supported by the Loyola Parents & Association (LPFA), the Loyola Ex~Students Association (LEXSA) and the College. Students may apply for up to two scholarships and those students awarded a scholarship for the 2014 academic year will not be eligible to apply this year. Year 7 to 11 students interested in applying for a scholarship are invited to collect the scholarship application form which is available from the Loyola College website www.loyola.vic.edu.au or from College Reception. All applications must be submitted by Monday 14 September to College Reception. The Scholarship Selection Committee will then shortlist and interview applicants with scholarships recipients being presented at the Annual Awards Evening on Friday 4 December 2015. FROM ICT MANAGER

ICT News Managing Your Child’s Screen Time Loyola College supports research findings recommending that parents and guardians be actively engaged in their child’s online world, not just their physical world. The College acknowledges the following concerns that have been occasionally raised by parents and guardians: Digital devices provide a distraction from school related

work, which is more difficult to police than text books. Writing on a digital device promotes laziness in regards

to handwriting, grammar, spell checking and simple calculations.

Long periods of screen time may lead to chronic eye strain and a gradual disconnect with the physical world.

Loyola College wishes to assure parents and guardians that its 1:1 digital devices program is supported by research findings which show that 1:1 improves the learning outcomes of students, particularly those of average and below average grades. Where 1:1 detracts from student learning, it involves student use of a digital device in an unmanaged environment. The College has invested heavily in both ICT infrastructure, teacher professional learning and policies (including a Handwriting Policy) to provide a safe and effective learning environment for its students, and this effort is ongoing and evolving as necessity dictates.

Screen time is a combination of the use of many forms of technology, not just digital devices for learning. These include cellular phones, television and games consoles. Loyola College strongly encourages and supports parental and guardian partnership in this endeavour as it cannot manage the home learning environment; this responsibility rests exclusively with parents and guardians. The following strategies are recommended for parents and guardians: Casual supervision of a child’s use of their digital device

in an open area of the home ~ never in a bedroom or behind closed doors.

Limiting the amount of time a child spends on a digital device, both in one sitting and over the course of an evening or day. Encourage a child to regularly get up or go outside and engage with physical activities and friends or other members of the family.

In addition to the cost effective Jacaranda eBook bundle, consideration to purchase the accompanying textbooks may also be given for use at home.

For more information and recommendations for parents and guardians on helping a child get the most benefit out of the use of technology, the following resources are suggested: Smart Screen Time for Kids ~ We are Teachers

HEAD OF CO~CURRICULUM AND COACH OF DAV DEBATING

DAV Debating On Wednesday 19 August, three intrepid Year 11 debaters sat anxiously in the hall of Northcote High School, awaiting the announcement of the A Grade DAV Debating Playoffs topic. Aisling O’Mahoney (11 XMCU), Giuliano Spina (11 XRFS) and Catriona Thomson (11 XMCU) have been debating together since Year 7. Five times a year, for the past 5 years, they have banded together to agree or disagree with the set topics, arguing socially, environmentally, economically, politically, health~wise, traditionally and security~wise, whatever the DAV has allocated as their contention. In 2015, during Round 5, they were facing an undefeated team of Year 12 students. They defeated them and won their way into the 2015 playoffs! As they sat at Northcote High School, pens in hand to jot down the topic read aloud by the organiser, they knew they

only had 60 minutes to prepare 24 minutes of pure, spoken gold. The topic, that We Regret Society’s Emphasis on the Importance of Getting a University Education in Developed Countries. We were negative. The debate, against St Margaret’s School, was heated, passionate and emphatic, with speakers running overtime in their eagerness to develop their points. Ultimately the debate came down to two ideas: the impact of society and the impact on individuals. We didn’t win the second point, regarding the impact on the individual, and unfortunately that meant that we were runners up on the day, and will not proceed in the finals.

We congratulate the three speakers on the day, Giuliano, Aisling and Catriona, as well as their team members Jerome Lin (11 XLCR) and Miklas Nielsen (12 XRFS), who assisted throughout the season. Getting to the DAV finals is a difficult task, and the effort, cohesion, and work ethic of this team over the years has paved the way to such success. Congratulations A Grade Loyola 1! FROM THE INTERCULTURAL PERSPECTIVES CO~ORDINATOR

Year 8 High Resolves Global Citizenship Program 17, 20 & 21 August All our Year 8 students were recently involved in completing the High Resolves Global Citizenship Program. The series of days were delivered in a fast paced workshop atmosphere where students were posed with questions causing them to question previously held attitudes to justice, equity and equality and then come up with workable fair solutions. They also learnt about the life of an Indian girl living in comparative poverty then reflected on the similarities and differences in their overall circumstances. Our team of Year 8 English teachers have been able to

extend this topic into their classes where students have been examining other’s lives in the novel Trash. At the conclusion of the day students were asked to reflect on their learning and write a post card to themselves to

remind them that we are indeed fortunate and we should consider our actions carefully.

Students were also asked to nominate for the Year 9 High Resolves Change Leadership Program currently run by Mr Michael Gowan. I also take this opportunity to thank the large group of Year 10 leaders who willingly gave up a day of classes to mentor the Year 8 students and facilitate their groups. High Resolves is a not for profit social justice organization that is brought into Loyola College by the Intercultural Perspectives department and complements our programs in English, Humanities, Religious Education and Christian Service. It is intended to develop attributes of Intercultural Understanding including; empathy, factors that influence cultural values, responsibility and perspective taking. FROM STUDENT PROGRAMS CO~ORDINATOR YEARS 7~9

Year 8 Personal Development: Part~Time Employment Year 8 students in Personal Development listened and took notes as guest speakers from Kmart, an Ex~Loyola student and current Senior Loyola students spoke about part~time employment.

The speaker talked about the importance of presentation and the benefits of wearing the Loyola College school uniform to the job interview. One key question was, “Do you make mistakes?” This

came from the Kmart speakers and the answer he wants to hear is yes from the applicants, but I learn from these so I do not repeat them again. The students heard from a range of speakers including McDonalds, AFL umpires, Hunger Cafe, Officeworks, AFL Records and Event Management. A common thread from the speakers was the companies like their staff to be happy, offer assistance and people who are organised. We wish our Year 8 students who will be applying for part~time work all the best, gaining the correct balance of work and school life and taking on extra responsibilities. FROM DIRECTOR OF SPORT

FROM ACS CROSS COUNTRY COACHES

ACS Cross Country Carnival ~ Friday 21 August Over one hundred Loyola students participated in the ACS Cross Country Carnival at Bundoora Park on Friday 21 August, with almost all teams complete. The highlight of the day was the camaraderie, encouragement and cheering at the finishing line. When the tired runners heard their names called out by the happy crowd of Loyola spectators, it spurred them to run harder for the finish. One of our Year 7 girls caught five other competitors in the last 100 metres!

We had some impressive individual performances with six students achieving podium finishes. Liam Kolar (7 KCMG) set a new ACS record and held off a strong Westbourne runner to win the Year 7 Boys 3km. In the Year 11 Girls 4km, the dynamic duo of Shania Murray (11 AJFT) and Lara Kolar (11 KSSD) finished first and second respectively. Three other students also grabbed silver medals. Stephanie Fell (8 CIKE), Joel Woods (8 FPTM) and Jarrod Woods (11 FSKE). Five other Loyola students ran strongly to receive top 10 finishes. Caden Murray (7 AEGR), Kate Kearney (9 KMLE), Anthony Boyle (10 FGAA), squad captain Erin Fischmann (12 ALEH) and Connor Douglas (12 CLHO). Well done to these students for their effort on the day and during the training phase.

All Loyola athletes have been emailed their result and they should feel good about their effort and their contribution to the team. They should also use their result as motivation to do better next year.

A particular area for improvement is commitment as a couple of our teams were incomplete. While this was partly due to injuries, it was also due to some students not showing up. This lets the team down. Students should remember that if they are selected in the squad that it is both an honour and a duty. Loyola came 6th out 7 schools and realistically we will need to be more committed to training and racing over the medium to long~term to significantly improve.

Thank you to the other coaches for helping with pins and numbers, Mr Leary for marking out the course, Ms Best for organising the buses and Mr Abbott for his support and being the announcer. And thank you to the year level captains who helped chase up students and make sure they were on the bus.

Well done to all runners who participated with such great spirit, during the weeks of training, while racing and cheering at the finish line. As coaches, Mr Langford and I had a lot of fun running with the students at training and enjoyed watching them give their best in the race regardless of their standard.

A Warm Welcome To All At Our Annual Open Day On Sunday 13 September Loyola College will host its annual Open Day showcasing the best that the College has to offer to all members of the College and wider community. Loyola College has always prided itself on its connections with families and the wider community and our Open Day provides another opportunity to welcome all to our College. A wonderful feature of our Open Day is our tours which are led by an army of student leaders and volunteers enthusiastic and passionate about their College. The Open Day will allow past, current and prospective Loyola families to meet staff and students, visit the quality College facilities on offer and see firsthand the work undertaken by the Loyola Parents and Friends Association (LPFA).

The Open Day also complements a program of promoting the College alongside our monthly College Tours conducted on designated first Mondays of the month in term time. These College Tours commence at 9.15am and include a Morning Tea with the Principal, Mr Joseph Favrin. The final tours in 2015 will take place on Monday 12 October and Monday 9 November and bookings are essential.

Past, present and future families and students are most welcome to view our grounds, visit our learning areas, participate in activities, and most importantly meet our students who along with our staff members are the College’s most valuable resources.

Open Day College Ambassadors Wanted All students are invited to consider being a Tour Guide on Open Day Sunday 13 September from 1.00~4.00pm. Information can be obtained from the 0014 letterbox. We need enthusiastic and confident young men and women to

show our visitors around. Interested students can contact me any time.

Bungay Street All drivers are asked to please be mindful of the stretch of Bungay Street on the school side of the road between Kenmare Street and Castlereigh Place. This has become a popular area to either park a car or stop briefly to allow passengers to alight etc. However drivers wanting to remain in that spot to make phone calls and the like are asked to please drive somewhere else well away from school traffic to allow a smooth flow of cars pulling in and pulling out.

The Last Working Bee for 2015 In overcast weather and far from ideal conditions the attendance at the Working Bee on Saturday 29 August was very encouraging. The Indigenous Garden at the front of the grounds was completed in fine style as well as other areas around the campus. We wish to thank most sincerely the following Loyola families who were prepared to honour their commitment to support the College in this way.
