ST. LOUIS CREATES: WORKS BY

LOCAL ARTISTSContinues until December 14th at the Saint Louis University

Museum of Art located at 3663 Lindell Blvd.

St. Louis is home to many great artists. Some of whom are known on the national and international stage. The current exhibit at the St. Louis University Museum of Art focuses on the art of nine local artists covering a wide range of media and styles. Home town artists include Peter Manion, James Holzer, Luanne Rimel, Thomas Sleet, Mark Pappas, Brian D. Smith, Sarah Paulsen, Stephen Da Lay, and Kenneth Worley.

Each artist brings a unique perspective and style to their work engaging the viewer differently as they approach the artist’s vision. Thomas Sleet focuses on the process from a deconstructive perspective producing minimal works that rely heavily on texture. Peter Manion becomes deeply absorbed by the materials employed that say as much about his perspective and experi-ence as they do about the creative process. The work of Sarah Paulsen, artist and animator, employs a wide variety of media which is dictated by the subject matter. Brian D. Smith, an exuberant colorist, whose paintings involve memory and imagination and the act of painting itself. James Holzer employs photography to investigate history from the perspective of cross-cultural commonalities of civilizations. For him the past is never far the now. The harmonies and rhythms found throughout Mark Pappas’ work are the vis-ible evidence of his fascination with the teachings, philosophies and arts of the ancient Greeks. He takes symmetries and harmonic proportions observed in the natural world reinventing them for his art. Luanne Rimel blends materials, technique and imagery that characterize the passage of time as it relates to the lingering memory of the present. Printmaker Stephen Da Lay’s methodic approach to form and content moves the image off the surface of the print and claims a place in space. Kenneth Worley’s is an environmental artist, whose primary works focus on the totality of nature, both in its beauty and its power. Nature serves as a springboard as he transforms tree topped hills into images of striking color, texture, and abstraction. His facility in the formal aspect of image making renders him a virtuoso.

Colonel Sanders : The founder of KFC. He started his dream at 65 years old! He got a social security check for only $105 and was mad. Instead of complaining he did something about it.

He thought restaurant owners would love his fried chicken recipe, use it, sales would increase, and he’d get a percentage of it. He drove around the country knocking on doors, sleeping in his car, wearing his white suit.

Do you know how many times people said no till he got one yes? 1009 times!

Walt Disney: The man who gave us Disney World and Mickey Mouse. His first animation company went banktrupt. He was fired by a news editor cause he lacked imagination. Legend has it he was turned down 302 times before he got financing for creating Disney World.

Albert Eistein: He didn’t speak till he was four and didn’t read till seven. His parents and teachers thought he was mentally handicapped. He only turned out to win a Nobel prize and be the face of modern physics.

Richard Branson: He’s a billionaire mogul of Virgin but has had his share of failures. Remember Virgin Cola or Virgin credit cards? Probably not. He’s lost hundreds of millions of dollars but has not let failure stop him. When you’re rich like him you can rent his private island for $53,000 a night.

Mark Cuban: The billionaire owner of the NBA’s Dallas Maver-icks got rich when he sold his company to Yahoo for $5.9 billion in stock. He admitted he was terrible at his early jobs. His parents wanted him to have a normal job. So he tried carpentry but hated it. He was a short order cook but a terrible one. He waited tables but couldn’t open a bottle of wine. He says of his failures,

“I’ve learned that it doesn’t matter how many times you failed,” Cuban says. “You only have to be right once. I tried to sell powdered milk. I was an idiot lots of times, and I learned from them all.”

Vincent Van Gogh: He only sold one painting in his lifetime! Just one to a friend. Despite that he kept painting and finished over 800 pieces. Now everyone wants to buy them and his most expensive painting is valued at $142.7 million.

FAMOUS FAILURES!

Are you starting to feel like your home is painted, tiled, and upholstered in pet hair? Especially during shedding season, it's easy for pet fur to get out of hand. To help get you through the worst of it, here are our five quick and easy ways to remove pet hair from clothing and couches.

1. Sponge It OffTo get pet hair off of couches or other upholstery, use a clean, dry kitchen sponge. Just run it slowly across the couch and the fur will cling to it! Problem solved.2. Grab the GlovesAnother easy way to get fur off of furniture is with a pair of rubber gloves. Instead of using them while washing dishes, pull them on and rub your hands over the couch (or whatever else needs de-furring) to pull up the hair.3. Packaging-Tape RollerLint rollers are convenient for picking up cat and dog hair, but their replacement sheets can be very expensive! Instead, just wrap some packaging tape in a circle, sticky-side out. You’ll have just as much pick-up power at half the price.4. Start at the SourceGrab pet hair where it starts--on your pet! Make your job easier by running a fabric softener sheet over your cat or dog. It will attract hair to it without you needing a brush.5. Get More Out of Your VacuumingYou’ve been vacuuming for a half an hour, and there’s still tons of hair in your carpet--it must be spring! Stop shedding in its tracks by spritzing your carpet with some liquid fabric softener diluted with water. Let sit for 5 minutes, then vacuum up all the hair that’s risen to the surface.
