St. Louis is home to many great artists. Some of whom are known on the national and international stage. The current exhibit at the St. Louis University Museum of Art focuses on the art of nine local artists covering a wide range of media and styles. Home town artists include Peter Manion, James Holzer, Luanne Rimel, Thomas Sleet, Mark Pappas, Brian D. Smith, Sarah Paulsen, Stephen Da Lay, and Kenneth Worley.

Each artist brings a unique perspective and style to their work engaging the viewer differently as they approach the artist’s vision. Thomas Sleet focuses on the process from a deconstructive perspective producing minimal works that rely heavily on texture. Peter Manion becomes deeply absorbed by the materials employed that say as much about his perspective and experi-ence as they do about the creative process. The work of Sarah Paulsen, artist and animator, employs a wide variety of media which is dictated by the subject matter. Brian D. Smith, an exuberant colorist, whose paintings involve memory and imagination and the act of painting itself. James Holzer employs photography to investigate history from the perspective of cross-cultural commonalities of civilizations. For him the past is never far the now. The harmonies and rhythms found throughout Mark Pappas’ work are the vis-ible evidence of his fascination with the teachings, philosophies and arts of the ancient Greeks. He takes symmetries and harmonic proportions observed in the natural world reinventing them for his art. Luanne Rimel blends materials, technique and imagery that characterize the passage of time as it relates to the lingering memory of the present. Printmaker Stephen Da Lay’s methodic approach to form and content moves the image off the surface of the print and claims a place in space. Kenneth Worley’s is an environmental artist, whose primary works focus on the totality of nature, both in its beauty and its power. Nature serves as a springboard as he transforms tree topped hills into images of striking color, texture, and abstraction. His facility in the formal aspect of image making renders him a virtuoso.

“I’ve learned that it doesn’t matter how many times you failed,” Cuban says. “You only have to be right once. I tried to sell powdered milk. I was an idiot lots of times, and I learned from them all.”

Vincent Van Gogh: He only sold one painting in his lifetime! Just one to a friend. Despite that he kept painting and finished over 800 pieces. Now everyone wants to buy them and his most expensive painting is valued at $142.7 million.
