Thick Wall + Hard Edge

The new building strength-ens the urban geometry of the triangle and Town Hall by reinstating the previous-ly eroded street edge and reinforcing the corners

Fremantle is a city built of thick walls, hard to the street edge, resulting in dense, urban settings.

The hard edge is demonstrated in the formed streets of Fremantle in its deeply recessed windows and arcades.

Glimpses and partial views are created in the scheme. Oblique views prioritise the one key vista of Fremantle; High Street

Fremantle’s grid is misaligned, roads just miss one another at oblique intersections – views are terminated by buildings and hard edges

Kinetic Unity - a study of local conditions, we pursue the re-emer-gence of local forms and architec-tural references, obvious and obscure

The urban room is formed by the program tension and relationship of the library and civic functions with the room’s ambition of incorpo-rating home comforts and familiar experiences

The hard street edge, heavy with building program provides hidden worlds of connecting space, ripe for rejuvenation

Fremantle’s inner world – ambiguous, approximate and imprecise, lightweight, additive and bricolage. No hedgehogs...

Multi Use Meeting SpacesMeet council staff, meet your PhD supervisor, meet your mum before book club.

Freo Hubupstairs at the historic Town Hall, Australia’s latest public office hub is now open for business. Budding creatives rub shoulders with financial angels who may take that solar powered gizmo all the way...

Town Hall Terracethe Town Hall terrace serves drinks at intermis-sion, and its a great view over the Square and Urban Room.

ChambersThe double height Council Chambers is accessed from the Terrace, and opens onto an outdoor balcony space as well as a large foyer/function area.

Town Hall Balconythe balcony reinterprets the original balcony of the town hall - a place to make announcements, raise the Grand Final trophy high and shout “Go Freo!”The chamfered blade wall also acts as a backdrop for sunset films in the Square.

Civic ForecourtCleared of the ad-hoc vegetation, the civic fore court expands the space of Kings Square across William, High and Adelaide Streets to form a memorable backdrop to markets, skate demonstrations, and the start of the Freman-tle Festival Parade. Taco Truck? muchos gracias senor...

More than a Visitor’s Centrelike its cousin in Fed Square this place turns up the volume after dark. Grab a brochure by day, grab a drink by night. Who said tourism was dull..?

More than a Wind TurbineKings Square has ESD literally built into its very core. A subterranean labyrinth system brings cooled air into the offfice and public spaces. Other elements proposed for the 800mm thick double wall that wraps the buildings include, double pocketed and operable glazed panels, smart shading louvres that can track the sun, water harvesting and re-use, solar arrays, wind turbines, community gardens, bike shares, electric bike charging stations, night purging and alfalfa sprouts...

The TerraceA public terrace extends Civic Func-tions into Kings Square. The stepped platform allow casual seating, lunch-time lectures, mayoral debates and access to the upper civic spaces of the Town Centre.

Fronting High Street, two small booths operate as a bar when functions require, or simply ticketing and infor-mation gateways at other times.

When the Terrace is closed, the bar can operate solely into the Urban Room and High St Mall.

The Urban RoomKings Square has at its heart the Urban Room, a place that buzzes with life 7 days a week, 18 hours a day. Listen to San Cisco play an acoustic set, join in with a Book Week activity at the library, dabble in a Freo Arts Centre Photography Course, meet with friends, eat lunch, or join the throngs for the Buskers Festival HQ.

The urban room expands and contracts to function spaces and hospitality places on every corner and edge, allowing multiple uses, simultaneous action and the abilty to host up to 2000 people for large events, undercover and protected. Laneway Festival 2014 is set to rock Kings Square, with bands playing across three stages in the Urban Room, Newman Court and the Civic Square to the High Street shared street.
