In this book, we are going to look at mistakes Thai learners of English often make and, more importantly, we will learn ways of fixing them. This may range from learning how to use reference books like dictionaries, observing how people react to the English you use, to simple memorization (boring, but sometimes necessary). Many mistakes, however, can be gradually eliminated if you can just get the right mental images, i.e., pictures, into your mind. I remember one of my first big Thai-language mistakes after coming to Thailand a long time ago. I saw a very full glass on a table and I said “แกวอม”. The young woman I was talking to was too polite to correct me, but I could see from her reaction that I had made a mistake. Obviously, I had the English sense of “full” in mind, which can be used for both a full stomach and anything else that has no more empty space inside. That is the idea behind the title of this section. “Make your homework, keep your books and close the light.” To many Thai learners of English these short sentences would seem to be direct English language translations of ทำ�ก�ร

Homework is an activity, however. It is something you do, not make. Thus English speakers would say “Do your homework.” The same is true for other jobs or chores. Homework is something you do, but while you are doing it you might make a mess if you carelessly leave your books on the table. Similarly, “put away your money”, means that your money is out in the open and you need to put it in a safe place. “Keep your money”, means to not give it to anyone else or, of course, to not throw it away. “put away your money” กเชนกนครบ นนคอก�รเกบเงนทคณว�งทงไวไปซะ และ

Typically, when you close something, you cover it so that it is no longer open. You close a door or a window, for example, so that there no longer an open space for air or people to go through. But an electric light is something else. You don’t cover it, but you turn off the flow of electricity

by moving a switch or a button. It might be easier to remember if you think of a turning a dial so the light gets dimmer and dimmer until it goes off. You also turn off an engine, a gas burner and a television.

Before we go on, let’s look at two more basic mistakes that stem from thinking in Thai and translating directly into English. They are beginner mis-takes, so hopefully you no longer make them, but I’m sure many of my readers still do. กอนอนเร�ม�ดก�รใชภ�ษ�องกฤษผดๆ กบสองขอทเกดม�จ�กก�รคดและแปลแบบ

The first is easy to correct because the Thai way of saying it is exactly opposite of the English way. How would you describe the fish in the cartoon using the adjective “tiny”? Is it a “fish tiny” or a “tiny fish”? ประก�รแรกน ง�ยตอก�รแกไขใหถกตองครบ เพร�ะ

In English, of course, the adjective comes before the noun, so it is a “tiny fish.” Once you realize this it only takes practice to get adjectives in the right position. When talking about things or ideas, i.e., when using nouns, English speak-ers have some basic concepts in their minds. You can think of them as shapes or objects. English speakers talk about countable forms in several ways, most com-monly using the article “a” (or “an” depending on the spelling) and plural forms when there is more than one. For uncountable forms they use neither. เจ�ของภ�ษ�จะมวธก�รพดถง “คำ�น�มนบได” หล�กหล�ยรปแบบครบ สวนใหญแลว
