WARNINGSome dust created by power sanding, sawing, grind-ing, drilling, and other construction activities containschemicals known to the State of California to causecancer, birth defects or other reproductive harm.Some examples of these chemicals are:

The purpose of safety symbols is to attract your attention to possible hazardousconditions. This manual uses a series of symbols and signal words which areintended to convey the level of importance of the safety messages. The progres-sion of symbols is described below. Remember that safety messages by them-selves do not eliminate danger and are not a substitute for proper accident pre-vention measures.

10. USE PROPER EXTENSION CORDfor the tool. Make sure your extensioncord is in good condition. Conductorsize should be in accordance with thechart below. The amperage ratingshould be listed on the motor or toolnameplate. An undersized cord willcause a drop in line voltage resultingin loss of power and overheating.Your extension cord must also con-tain a ground wire and plug pin.Always repair or replace extensioncords if they become damaged.

11. WEAR PROPER APPAREL. DONOT wear loose clothing, gloves,neckties, rings, bracelets, or otherjewelry which may get caught in mov-ing parts. Non-slip footwear is recom-mended. Wear protective hair cover-ing to contain long hair.

12. ALWAYS USE SAFETY GLASSES.Also use face or dust mask if cuttingoperation is dusty. Everyday eye-glasses only have impact resistantlenses, they are NOT safety glasses.

13. SECURE WORK. Use clamps or avise to hold work when practical. It issafer than using your hand and freesboth hands to operate tool.

14. DO NOT OVERREACH. Keep properfooting and balance at all times.

15. MAINTAIN TOOLS WITH CARE.Keep tools sharp and clean for bestand safest performance. Followinstructions for lubricating andchanging accessories.

16. DISCONNECT TOOLS before ser-vicing and changing accessories.

17. REDUCE THE RISK OF UNINTEN-TIONAL STARTING. Make sureswitch is in off position before plug-ging in.

18. USE THE RECOMMENDEDACCESSORIES. Consult theowner’s manual for recommendedaccessories. The use of improperaccessories may cause risk of injury.

19. CHECK DAMAGED PARTS. Beforefurther use of the tool, a guard orother part that is damaged should becarefully checked to determine that itwill operate properly and perform itsintended function. Check for align-ment of moving parts, binding ofmoving parts, breakage of parts,mounting, and any other conditionsthat may affect its operation. A guardor other part that is damaged shouldbe properly repaired or replaced.

20. NEVER LEAVE TOOL RUNNINGUNATTENDED. Turn the power off,and do not leave tool until it comes toa complete stop.

We are proud to offer the Grizzly ModelH5503 14 Gauge Swivel Head Shears.This model is part of a growing Grizzlyfamily of fine power tools. When usedaccording to the guidelines set forth in thismanual, you can expect years of trouble-free, enjoyable operation and proof ofGrizzly’s commitment to customer satis-faction.

This shear features a 120 volt, 4 amp, 3⁄4HP motor and a heavy duty aluminumhead that swivels 360˚. It can cut up to 14gauge mild steel and 18 gauge stainlesssteel, and is capable of cutting 12.5 feetper minute.

We are pleased to provide this manualwith the Model H5503. It was written toencourage safety considerations andguide you through general operating pro-cedures and maintenance. This manualrepresents our effort to produce the bestdocumentation possible.

OPERATION

Test Run

Operating these shears can propelobjects into the air, causing immedi-ate eye damage. To protect yourself,always wear American NationalStandards Institute (ANSI) approvedsafety glasses or goggles when oper-ating this equipment. To protect yourhands, always wear leather hand pro-tection when operating this shear.

Swivel Head

Preparing For Operation

Before performing a cut, you will need toprepare the workpiece.

Check the type and the gauge of the mate-rial that will be cut. Make sure the capaci-ty of the shears can handle the material tobe cut.

Cutting Capacities:

• Up to 14 gauge sheet metal• Up to 18 gauge stainless steel

Make sure that the workpiece is securebefore starting the cut.

Before performing any cutting operations,test run the tool.

1. Connect the tool to a power sourceand squeeze the trigger (Figure 1).

2. If everything appears to be in workingorder, you are ready to set up a cut.

The aluminum head on the Model H5503 iscapable of rotating 360˚.

To rotate the head of the shears:

1. Loosen the middle and rearsetscrews (shown with arrows inFigure 2) on the side of the shear-head.

2. Rotate the head until the desiredposition is reached, then tighten thesetscrews.

Cutting Trigger Lock

To start a cutting operation:

1. Choose a work space that is ade-quate for the size of material to becut and secure the workpiece.

2. Layout the cut lines in your materialwith a scribe or writing utensil.

3. Start cutting at the edge of the work-piece as shown in FIgure 3. Youmust apply forward pressure tobegin cutting. DO NOT force shearsthrough the workpiece.

Note—If everything is properly adjustedand in working order, there should be aspiral trail of sheet metal exiting the shearas you make your cut.

To operate the trigger lock when cut-ting:

1. Begin cutting the material.

2. While cutting, press the trigger lockbutton into the handle as shown inFigure 4.

3. Continue cutting without holdingdown the trigger.

4. Squeeze in the trigger and the trig-ger lock will disengage.

Never start a cut with the triggerlock on. Only engage the trigger lockwhen the shears have entered andstarted cutting the workpiece.Serious personal injury and damageto the workpiece can occur.

The removed spiral metal is sharp.DO NOT try to remove the metalfrom the workpiece by hand. Useheavy leather gloves when handling.Serious personal injury could occur.

The trigger lock allows you to cut withoutholding in the trigger.

When making an inside cut, drill a startinghole in the material. This will provide aninterior starting edge to cut the material.

Changing Blades

To change the blades:

1. Make sure the tool is disconnectedfrom the power supply.

2. Unscrew the three cap screws in thehead of the shears and set themaside.

3. Remove the head assembly fromthe main body of the shear by pullingit forward (Figure 5).

4. Remove the middle blade and sideblades from the housing. Keep thespacer bushing for re-assembly.

5. Sharpen or replace the blades.

6. Install the blades back into the hous-ing.

Note— Reassemble the blades backinto the housing the same way theywere taken out. Make note of theirorientation.

7. Place the head around the gear boxcover ring and tighten the capscrews to lock it into position.

LubricationAlways disconnect the power from thetool before performing any mainte-nance.

• Place one drop of light machine oil inthe shear jaws (as shown in Figure 6)before every use. Wipe off any excessoil to avoid dust build-up.

• Place a few drops of heavy oil on thebearing assembly (Figure 7). Removethe gear box cover and lubricate thebackside of the bearing assembly.

Changing Motor BrushesCarbon motor brushes are an importantfactor in maintaining quality power tool per-formance.

To change the motor brushes:

1. Remove the four screws in the handlecover (Figure 8).

2. Remove the old motor brushes fromthe side of the motor casing (Figure9).

3. Replace the carbon brushes and reat-tach the handle cover.

Cleaning ShearUse a good solvent to clean the jawassembly of the shear. Avoid getting sol-vent on the plastic body of the shear as itmay damage the plastic. Always be surethat the shear is dry before using it again.

Do not allow dust, chips, sand, etc. into theair vent holes. This could lead to motor fail-ure and premature bushing failure.

Never use use gasoline or other flam-mable liquids to clean this tool.Vapors in the tool may ignite, causingthe tool to explode. Ignoring thiswarning may lead to serious personalinjury or even death!

Basic Care

The following should be performed on thetool when applicable:

• Blow off dirt, dust and debris from thetool and out of the air vents.

• Maintain a sharp edge on your bladesfor the best performance.

• Clean the power cord and coil it neatlywhen the tool is not in use.

• Repair or replace damaged parts.

• Keep the blade safety cover on whenthe tool is not in use.
