1.4 : IMPORTANCE OF A HEALTHY RESPIRATORY SYSTEM

Harmful substances to the Respiratory System

SULPHUR DIOXIDE •  Is released when

fossil fuels are burnt in factories

•  A poisonous acidic gas

•  Dissolves in rain to form acid rain

•  Corrodes the respiratory system as it is corrosive

•  Causes asthma and bronchitis

Prepared  by  Ms  Sue  Soh

1.4 : IMPORTANCE OF A HEALTHY RESPIRATORY SYSTEM

Harmful substances to the Respiratory System

CARBON MONOXIDE •  A very poisonous gas •  Is produced out

when fossil fuels are incompletely burnt

•  Combines with haemoglobin to form carboxyhaemoglobin

•  Reduces oxygen intake and causes death of carbon monoxide poisoning

Prepared  by  Ms  Sue  Soh

1.4 : IMPORTANCE OF A HEALTHY RESPIRATORY SYSTEM

Harmful substances to the Respiratory System

CARBON DIOXIDE •  Produced from the

burning of fossil fuels

•  Traps heat (sun) in the atmosphere and causes global warming

•  Causes severe headache

Prepared  by  Ms  Sue  Soh

1.4 : IMPORTANCE OF A HEALTHY RESPIRATORY SYSTEM

Harmful substances to the Respiratory System

DUST •  Irritates the

respiratory system

•  Blocks the bronchioles & causes lung diseases

•  Attracts bacteria – tuberculosis bacteria

Prepared  by  Ms  Sue  Soh

1.4 : IMPORTANCE OF A HEALTHY RESPIRATORY SYSTEM

Harmful substances to the Respiratory System SMOG •  Dust + mist = smog •  Reduces visibility •  Causes asthma and bronchitis especially

among the elderly people

Prepared  by  Ms  Sue  Soh

1.4 : IMPORTANCE OF A HEALTHY RESPIRATORY SYSTEM

Harmful chemicals in Cigarettes NICOTINE •  Poisonous

chemicals in cigarettes

•  Highly addictive •  Hardens the blood

vessels – blood cannot flow through them easily – causes high blood pressure

•  Causes lung cancer Prepared  by  Ms  Sue  Soh

1.4 : IMPORTANCE OF A HEALTHY RESPIRATORY SYSTEM

Harmful Chemicals in Cigarettes TAR •  Thick black substance

– sticks to the walls of respiratory system

•  Corrodes the lung cells – lungs are less elastic & unable to function properly

•  Prevents dust particles & bacteria from being cleared from the lungs – leads to infection Prepared  by  Ms  Sue  Soh

1.4 : IMPORTANCE OF A HEALTHY RESPIRATORY SYSTEM

Harmful chemicals in Cigarettes

CARBON MONOXIDE •  Decreases the

oxygen intake as it tends to combine better with haemogolbin compare to oxygen

•  Causes a loss of 10% of oxygen intake Prepared  by  Ms  Sue  Soh

1.4 : IMPORTANCE OF A HEALTHY RESPIRATORY SYSTEM

Harmful Chemicals in Cigarettes

CARCINOGENS •  Chemicals

which causes cancer

•  Cigarette smoke contains carcinogens such as benzopyrene

•  Causes mouth cancer, lung cancer & throat cancer
