NORMAL NEWBORN NURSERYMedical Student and PA Student Rotation

Welcome to Newborn Nursery! Please read this guide prior to the start of your rotation.

The newborn nursery is staffed by the newborn attending, 2-3 interns, and 1-3 students. The interns carry the entire patient population. Medical and PA students are expected to pick up 1-2 newborn patients on their first day and present them during morning rounds on their 2nd/3rd days. For the first day, please go directly to morning report and then come to rounds at Prentice on the 11th floor in the 11-2215 conference room at 9am. During your first day, the attending on service and/or the interns will teach you the newborn exam.

Once rounds are done for the first day, you can work with the interns to help with any patient needs and identify any new babies born for you to pick up. Please see these babies/moms with the intern.

You should spend part of your time with us reading and learning about the newborn exam. The website that we recommend for this is: www.newborns.stanford.edu. Once you are at the website, follow the professional education link (on the left) and then go to photo gallery. What you will find is an expansive photo gallery of the entire newborn physical exam with videos and full descriptions. It would likely take you an entire week of study to get through the entire website. As you are just on newborn for 1-3 days, please try to focus on the areas that are the most relevant to your particular training needs.

On your subsequent day(s), please arrive with enough time to be able to pre-round on your 1-2 patients. Most students find that coming around 7- 7:15 in the morning gives them enough time to find the information they need on Powerchart and to see/examine their babies. Again, please make sure to see these babies with the intern. If you let the intern know the day before which patient(s) you will be examining in the morning, they will plan their pre-rounds to ensure that they see these babies with you.

On your last day with us, we will ask that you present a short 5-10 minute talk on the normal and abnormal physical exam findings from one system of a newborn baby (respiratory, cardiac, skin, etc.). You will be able to use the above website to get all the information needed for this talk. The purpose of this talk is for your own learning, so handouts are only necessary if they help you to present. Often, students like to present with the website open so that they can show the pictures as they are talking.

During your few days with us, we will also have newborn nursery specific education run by the attending and interns 4 days/week. These topics are generally presented from 2:30p – 3p and are then followed by afternoon rounds. Please make every effort to ensure that you do not schedule afternoon appointments/meetings so that you can attend these lectures and rounds. Your day should end around 4pm.
