Foreward Why celebrate a 140th anniversary? Why not wait until 2017 A. D - the 150th birthday of this church?

Those who are here then, will. We who are here now don't have to wait ten years to celebrate! We have a church's rebirth to celebrate. The church is alive and well - hopeful for the future, proud of our heritage. We have painted the facilities inside and out this year, symbolic of our pride and optimism. We have an award-winning Child Development Center and many other mission involvements such as Bellewood Home for Children, Central State Hospital, HzdDitat for Humanity and Living Waters for the World.

So we consecrate this 140th year of our history to praise - thanking Qod for the opportunity to serve in this church, saying with the Pszilmist, "O sing to the Lord a new song, for Qod has done marvelous things!"

Venerable and historic church thrives amidst swift and complex growth of Oldham County

Once-quiet and buco i ic O ldham County has exper ienced dramat ic change and growth dur ing recent decades. But Pewee Valley Presbyterian Church has remained a constant as a s t rong and resourceful place for Christ ians to worship.

As the c o m m u n i t y o f bel ievers celebrates the 140'^ anniversary o f the church dur ing the fail o f 2 0 0 7 , the people themselves now come f r om vastly di f ferent backgrounds and perspectives than d id the ir predecessors even In fairly recent decades.

Many new members are f r om di f ferent rel ig ious t rad i t ions . This diversity provides a r ich and nur tur ing env i r onment for longt ime and new members as well as fr iends o f the church .

In recent years the focus on ch i ldren and you th has been sharpened at PVPC, w i th the cons t ruc t ion a decade ago o f the popular and successful Chi ld Deve lopment Center. It is an infants-through-Rlndergarten school that always has a wai t ing list o f young people whose parents want t h e m to a t tend.

Dur ing the church ' s centennia l ce lebrat ion in 1966, Pewee Valley was portrayed as "...a suburban village eighteen mi les f r om Louisvi l le . The streets o f the village, ex tending no r th and south a long the LaQrange Road, are l ined wi th tai l trees f o rming Gothic Arches as they meet in the center. There is a peace and serenity about the vil lage, wh i ch , in the latter part o f the 19th century, drew people away f rom the city to spend the summers in the county. Other people had permanent residences nest led among the trees back f r om the street. There was a white wooden fence in f ront o f each place, and stone gate posts marked the entrance. "

The sanctuary looks m u c h the same as it d id then , and actual ly as it d id when it was constructed , but it has been carefully ma in ta ined and updated . The Family Life Center, wh i ch houses the schoo l , was a signif icant add i t i on to the church ' s campus, and remains the center o f social life for the congregat ion.

The beginnings o f the church trace back to Movember o f 1866 when a commi t t ee f rom the Presbytery o f Louisvi l le me t to cons ider organiz ing a church there. The lOO'*^ anniversary history o f the church says the commi t t e e consisted o f the Rev. J . L. McRee, the Rev. James Lapley, and Eider J . B. Kinkade. A congregat ion was organized and off icers were elected. On November 17, 1866, the Session me t in the Methodist Church In Rol i lngton, a

smal l village nor th o f Pewee Valley, and formal ly organized the Presbyterian Church of Pewee Valley. A m o n g the organiz ing members were Alexandar Craig, Mrs. Annie Craig, Mr. and Mrs. J . B. Rohrer, Miss Sarah McRee, Mr. Charles B. Cot ton, Miss Jennie Cot ton, Mr. Thomas Barclay, and Miss Jennie Mitchel l .

The history goes on to say that whi le the church was be ing bui l t , services were held in what is now the Parish House. It was bu i l t for a schoo l where Mrs. Magruder, a sister of Judge Peter Muir, taught. Later it was used as a manse f rom the t ime o f Dr. Cle land, 1884, unt i i Dr. Hoge came in 1907.

"A year after the formal organizat ion o f the Pewee Valley Church the present sanctuary was comple ted , and on November 2 1 , 1867, Dr. B. H. McCowan preached the dedicatory se rmon. The Rev. J . L. McRee was act ing modera tor for the church . The first m e m b e r to j o i n the church in 1867 was a Negro woman . Aunt Clary Cordon . In June 1870 Charles B. Cot ton and his wife deeded the church the church property to the church "Trustees, J . H. Rohrer, Thomas B. Crawford, and J . M. Armstrong , and the ir successors here after to be elected."
