Dear Friends,
I am sing in my study looking out on yet another rainy, windy and cold day. It could
be worse... But I am sure like me you are looking to brighter beer days. I think we all
long for a life that is full of ‘all things bright and beauful’. Our theme for this year in
our parishes is ‘Life in all its fullness’. This is a promise of what life is like when we
become true disciples of Christ.
We have already launched the prayer for the church for 2014 - you will find a copy of
this in church. It is a prayer from ‘The Message’ version of the Bible and is from the
leer to the Colossians. This leer has such a lot to teach us about being disciples and
receiving that wonderful blessing of ‘life in all its fullness’. During Lent we shall be
studying Colossians in our sermon series ‘Be complete in Christ’. We will also be
offering you further opportunies for reflecon at the Oasis Meditaons based on the
events of Holy Week.
If you would like a tradional Bible study you could join the York Course being held in
the home of Liz and Roger Hillman; again details of this are published in the yellow
booklet ‘Life in all its fullness’ which is available in church to guide you on your Lenten
journey.
Lent is a limited period and I would like to encourage you to make this short-term
commitment to spend me in engaging in some of the opportunies on offer. Not all
of them offer a warm, fuzzy experience some may be more challenging. Lent is for all
people and a gi8 from God to allow him to change us for the beer not only as
individuals but as a church.
‘Jesus came and stood among them and said, ‘Peace be with you.’
Jesus comes to bring wholeness,
’Shalom’ to those who look to him - this
is our prayer for ourselves, our families,
our church and our communies.
With prayers for every blessing,
Vicky Fleming

Swindon Council says sorry to residents
who need an extra recycling box
Extra recycling boxes will not be available for collecon starng from Sunday 9th
February due to an unforeseeable delay and the Council apologises to residents for any
inconvenience caused.
People who sll need an addional box are encouraged to connue pung any surplus
recycling in alternave plasc containers or carrier bags and collecon crews will pick
it up as a temporary measure.
The box delay is due to a problem with the supplier and we are working hard to ensure
they are delivered and available to pick up at the collecon points as soon as possible,
hopefully at some point next week.
More than 3,500 boxes have already been issued to residents who need an extra one
to accommodate the weekly to fortnightly recycling collecon service change, starng
Monday, 3 February.
The recycling changes mean that residents are asked to put out their recycling on the
next day they are due a wheelie bin or blue bag collecon for general waste. Plascs in
clear bags should also be put out on this day.
There are various ways people can make the most of space in their recycle boxes,
including squashing ns and cans, breaking down any cardboard boxes, stacking
boles neatly and pung shredded paper into a large envelope or cereal box.
For further updates on extra box availability and more informa1on about the service
change, please see www.swindon.gov.uk
Cllr Richard Hurley, Cabinet Member for Public Protecon, Housing and StreetSmart,
said: “I would like to personally apologise to all residents who sll need an extra box
and reassure them that we are doing all we can to make boxes available as soon as
possible. I appreciate this will be frustrang for some residents and encourage them to
keep recycling by pung any surplus in alternave plasc containers or carrier bags
for crews to pick up as normal. Thank you for your connued paence whilst we work
to resolve this as a priority – your co-
operaon is really appreciated.”

The Parish Council discussed the issues of roads and connecvity at the Parish Council
meeng on the 18th February 2014. The following resoluons were passed
unanimously, with all Parish Councillors in aendance:
Consulta$on over the last few years has confirmed that the top concern of local
residents is the impact by development on local road networks and junc$ons onto the
A420. A par$cular cause of concern is the likely increase in traffic using Pound Corner
and Old Vicarage Lane to access the planned new community facili$es and school.
Resoluon 1:
• South Marston Parish Council confirms its agreement with the dra5 SM
SPD’s proposal/requirement for a road link connec$ng the new areas of
development running north of Manor Farmhouse. This should provide
road access into the village central area from the south and from the
west rather than via a ‘bypass’ and exis$ng village roads as suggested
by the developer’s outline planning applica$on.
• To enable this to happen, the Parish Council is willing to allow access
across the southern end of the exis$ng recrea$on ground to the school
and community facili$es provided the community gains the
compensatory green open space behind Bell Gardens.
• The Parish Council will con$nue nego$a$ons with HHL and other
developers to achieve an integrated plan for the village, consistent with
the dra5 Supplementary Planning Documents and Local Plan.
Resoluon 2:
Housing development at Crown Timber has previously been refused as being
too remote from the village centre. The Parish Council will oppose residen$al
development of the Crown Timber or Thornhill sites without:
• A sa$sfactory footpath provision from the site to the centre of the village
in the first phase of development.
• A design layout for both sites that enables appropriate links with the
proposed Eastern Villages development for pedestrians and cyclists as
well as cars.

Paul the Postman
Many of you will have noced that Paul, our village postman,
has been off work since Christmas as he is waing for a knee
operaon. Robbie Taylor contacted Paul’s manager at the
Royal Mail to send Paul our best wishes for a speedy return.
Paul’s response is below:
‘I’d like to say a massive THANK YOU for the e-mail you sent to my managers as it was
totally unexpected. It made me feel very emo$onal and proud as the last 3 months
since I injured my knee have been very hard, as the longest I’ve ever been off work
before was two weeks since I started work 30 years ago.
All I’ve ever done with my customers in South Marston the last 13 years is to treat them
the way I would want my postman to treat me, so to get such a nice e-mail for just
doing my job was a much needed boost. I always say at work that I’m very lucky to
deliver to such a lovely village that is full of people that I can call friends as much as
they are my customers, and would happily stay on my round $ll I re$re.
The opera$on on my knee is not due to be done un$l April so unfortunately it will be a
while $ll I get back to work but if you could kindly pass on a personal THANK YOU and
say hello from me to anyone in the village I would really be grateful.’
Robbie has very kindly agreed to act as a collection point for any cards or
messages you would like to pass on to Paul and can be contacted on 823757.

Great Daffodil Appeal 2014
Marie Curie Cancer Care
Marie Curie Cancer Care provides free hands-on nursing care for people with all
terminal illnesses either in their own home or in one of the charity’s nine hospices.
Marie Curie is best known for its network of over 2,000 Marie Curie Nurses, who
provide care to paents across the UK, as well as emoonal support for their families.
The charity provided care to more than 38,000 people with terminal illnesses, and is the
largest provider of hospice beds outside the NHS.
The Great Daffodil Appeal
Marie Curie’s Great Daffodil Appeal kicks off across the country
on 1st March. Volunteer collectors will be out in force
throughout the month of March encouraging everyone to give
a donaon and wear one of the charity’s daffodil pins.
All the funds raised by the appeal will help Marie Curie Nurses
provide more care for people with terminal illnesses, at the
me when they need the most support.
The Great Daffodil Appeal doesn’t just raise much-needed funds; it also raises
awareness of Marie Curie services and the need for high quality nursing care for people
with terminal illnesses.
As people live longer, increasing numbers of people have long-term condions
requiring more complex support towards the final stages of life. Despite this, end of life
care is an under-researched area. Marie Curie invests in high quality research to
provide real benefits to people with terminal illnesses, their carers and families. Marie
Curie is the only charity exclusively funding end of life care research and invests around
£3million per year in research.
So please support the Great Daffodil Appeal, and help give people with
terminal illnesses the care they need and deserve at the end of their lives.

What's Going On?
I do like to know what is going on in the village, parcularly with the proposed
expansion, so since my arrival in October 2012 I have made a point of aending the
monthly South Marston Parish Council (SMPC) meengs.
I know more about drainage and culverts than I have ever known and I could probably
hold my own in a conversaon about the village allotments thanks to Barry
Thunder. Two iniaves, Speed Watch and the 20 MPH zoning led by Tony Leathart
and Colin McEwen respecvely, should ensure traffic adheres to sensible speed limits
making the village a safer place to be.
There are procedures for dealing with parishioners' concerns so write in if you need
help to resolve a problem. I have learned what can be done to tackle troublesome
neighbours as well as hedges and leaves creang hazardous condions for drivers and
cyclists.
Ken Millard informs the group about proposed extensions and building works, whilst
Sylvia Brown takes the lead on the village expansion.
There is a lot going on and meengs are eye opening.
The school is being expanded onto the Rec and if we want to know what progress is
being made on this topic SMPC says we need to contact Swindon Borough Council. If
like me you want to keep up with proposals for the use of what will remain of the Rec
(a new hall for the village with car parking and access road possibly) come along and
have a say either on the Council (there are two vacancies) or join me in the 'public
gallery' to listen in. You will be made very welcome. Thank you Adye Goodenough for
your company these past months.
Of course sing through these meengs is not everyone's cup of tea so check out the
village website for SMPC reports, minutes and agendas. If you need help to get to
meengs remember our new door-to-door transport scheme. Either way it's good to
know what's going on that affects life in the village today and what's going on at this
point in me that is shaping the future for our children and grandchildren. Time well
spent I think.
Anne Featherstone, Stonecro5
(Re$red but never without a job to do)
The Community Speed Watch (CSW) scheme, run by the Swindon Borough
Council in conjuncon with the Police, gives local people the chance to be
acvely involved in making South Marston’s roads safer for everyone in the
village.
With the expansion of the village, many more cars are expected to use the
village roads and, if the 20mph zone is introduced, the CSW Team will be there
to help ensure that it is observed.
If you can spare just an hour or two a month at a me to suit you (maybe
before or a8er work) then please contact the village co-ordinator:
