PURPOSE: Brookwood Middle School – Gymnasium and Outdoor Fields for Physical Education (PE)

Outline of Discussion

1. Existing Gym and Stage Walk-Thru: Matt Brandt (MB), D167 PE instructor, led a brief walk-thru of the existing Gym and Stage. The current situation of the existing Gym and Stage is as follows. a. Existing gym size (approx. 60’x70’) allows for only one PE class of about

24 students. b. Court striping is limited to one basketball court. MB expressed that he

would like to have courts lines in addition to the main basketball and volley ball lines, striping for practice basketball and volleybal.

c. There is limited storage space for folding chairs, tables, gym equipment. There is under-stage chair storage.

d. The existing gym has 3 row telescopic bleachers on both sides perpendicular to the stage.

e. Existing gym and stage have VCT flooring. f. Existing stage is 16’x 60’ including storage. g. Existing stage height is 42” AFF. h. MB expressed a need for storing wrestling mats either beneath the

2. Gymnasium: STR presented two options to develop gym size and layout. Option 1 includes previously shown gym size with bleachers. Option 2 shows a slightly smaller gym with fewer bleachers. See attached for more information. The following decisions shall inform the design development of Gym: a. Gym Size

1. D167 prefers to have a larger size gym in Option 1 (approx. 68’-8”x 80’-0”) since there is a need to run two sections of gym at a time.

b. Court Lines 1. D167 prefers to have Option 2 court layout which includes the

followings:

• 1 tournament basketball court • 1 tournament volleyball court • 2 practice basketball courts • 2 practice basketball courts

2. Practice courts to be larger by utilizing the space taken by

bleachers in open positions since bleacher would be most likely closed while practice courts are used. STR to modify.

3. STR will explore color layout options for court layout for D167 to review/approval.

c. Gym Equipment 1. Gym Divider curtain: D167 agreed to have a ceiling mounted

roll up gym divider curtain in the middle of Gym in north-south direction as indicated in drawings

2. Telescopic Bleachers: D167 prefer to have bleacher indicated in Option 1, which will have approx. seating capacity of 250 people.

3. Backstop: D167 prefers to have glass backstop (nicer one) for tournament basketball court only and painted metal backstop for practice basketball courts. D167 prefers to have all 6 backstops to have adjustable height function to able to serve community as well as kids in the school. Backstops above bleacher and in front of stage will need to have retractable function. STR is to get back with cost implication for adding adjustable height and retractable functions.

4. Shot Timer: There will be no shot timer. 5. Digital Scoreboard: D167 prefers to have one standard

scoreboard with wireless remote control function. The size will be approx. 7’x 3’-6”, Scoreboard function and appearance will be similar or equal to1500 series scoreboard by Fair-Play Scoreboard Company as printed in the handouts.

6. Speaker and Audio Equipment: D167 prefer to have the same wireless audio system with remote controller used at other

STR STR STR

Page 3: 140723 meeting summary...f. Gym Flooring: 1. STR briefly talked about gym flooring options during the walk-thru of the existing gym, but no further discussion was made. Gym flooring

schools in the district. D167 will provide the contact for the audio equipment company for STR to set up a coordination meeting. D167 assume that there will be 2 speakers each on north and south walls, and 2 interceptor/transmitter somewhere in between. The control will be somewhere near or in the stage.

7. Volleyball Floor Sleeve: D167 agreed to have built-in floor sleeve for tournament and if practical for practice volleyball courts.

8. Climbing Wall, Chin Up Wall, and Peg Board: There was no special request from D167 to include these in scope.

9. Wall Pads and Acoustic Panels: Although wall pads and acoustic panels were not discussed in the meeting, wall pads and acoustic panels will be provided in the manner similar to the interior elevation drawings since they are necessary for good acoustic and code required safety.

10. Drinking Fountain: D167 prefer to have drinking fountain inside of Gym in additions to the drinking fountains in Corridor out side of Gym. D167 concluded that having drinking fountain inside of Gym would result in increase teacher’s supervision for students. D167 agreed to have 2 drinking fountains on the east wall by the double door on south. One is mounted high for adult, and the other is low for kids.

d. Gym Storage: 1. D167 prefer to have basic storage layout shown in Option 1. 2. Storage space under the stage is necessary to store folding

chairs, table and wrestling mats – Note: This storage space in required to be sprinklered by code.

3. Storage Rm#129 to accommodate heavy-duty steel storage shelving .

4. STR to investigate wrestling mat storage as suspended motorized drop-down in rafters.

e. PE Office & Storage: 1. PE Office will be provided as indicated in Option 1. 2. PE Storage will have tall cabinets.

f. Gym Flooring: 1. STR briefly talked about gym flooring options during the walk-

thru of the existing gym, but no further discussion was made. Gym flooring needs to be discussed in the future.

D167 STR

3. Stage STR presented two options for stage layout. The following decisions shall inform the development of the Stage. a. Stage Heights (42” vs. 24”):

1. D167 prefer to have 42” high stage with storage space under the stage as indicated in Option 1.

b. Stage Proscenium Opening Size: 1. STR showed a proscenium stage opening 36’ wide x 13’-6” tall

based on the Junior High School. This was agreed as the largest opening that could be needed.

c. Stage Equipment 2. D167 agree to have basic stage curtains. Further discussion on

stage curtain in specifics and may need to be discussed. 3. D167 agree to have basic stage lighting. Further discussion on

STR STR

stage lighting in specifics and may need to be discussed.

4. D167 agree to have Stage Control location to be as indicated in Option 1 – east side of Stage. Further discussion on stage control may need to be discussed.

5. D167 prefer to have a large ceiling mounted motorized drop down rear projector screen inside of stage proscenium mounted at approx. 4’ to 6’ north of stage opening, that allows a lecturer to stand in front and/or aside of the screen during a lecture. The exact size of screen to be discussed in the future.

6. D167 prefer to have a rear projector on mobile cart, which can be store in Stage storage. Rear projection screen and cart by owner – D167 to confirm.

g. Stage Storage: 1. D167 prefer to have stage storage layout shown in Option 1

with a modification. The modification is as follows: • Add extra storage space above Storage Rm#129 in

mezzanine level and add a small access stair from Stage on north wall.

STR D167 STR

4. Outdoor Play Fields a. D167 prefer to have a hard surface area of approx. 96’x144’ with 2

basketball courts and an area for four-square and hop-scotch. b. D167 prefer to have U10 Soccer field with movable goals. c. D167 prefer to have youth size baseball diamond on southwest corner.

Only the diamond and standard simple baseball protection fences are provided. The fence shall include bent top foul ball protection fence. No dirt infield is to be provided; grass is sufficient.

d. A future play-ground equipment area is to be planned located near the hard surface play area but not to be part of the project at this time. STR and D167 to consider ways to separately fund such as through the Kaboom grant program, http://kaboom.org/about_kaboom/programs/grants

e. D167 agree to have continuous ornamental fence along property line as indicated in Drawing. 4’ high fence is proposed near the building and 6’ high fence at the area far away from the building. STR to confirm fence elevations in future meeting.

f. D167 prefer to have a security camera and good lighting at outdoor field for safety.

g. STR advised that field area may be needed for storm water detention and that this may limit use after heavy rains. D167 thinks this is a good reason to have the larger hard surface play area per “a”.

STR

5. Future System specific meetings a. STR advised that some independent meetings are required to discuss

the specifics of certain building systems so that our engineers can design to D167 requirements.

b. These include the following: • Technology – building-wide goals • Audio System in Gym & Stage (D176 to provide a contact) • Lighting Controls (inc. Stage lighting)

Page 5: 140723 meeting summary...f. Gym Flooring: 1. STR briefly talked about gym flooring options during the walk-thru of the existing gym, but no further discussion was made. Gym flooring

• Security System • Food Service

c. STR would like to schedule the Food Service meeting sooner than later. It would be best if the Director of Food Service be present and possibly one or two of the staff that work in the kitchen / servery.

1. D167 to provide STR with this contact so this can be facilitated.
