Leashless Ice Climbing! Are you crazy? That’s what I thought when Leashless fi rst came on the scene. Then I gave it an honest shot and actually learned how liberating Leash-less Climbing can be.
Everyone I talk to asks the same questions: “Don’t you get too pumped?” “How can you rest without hanging on your leash-es?” “What if you drop a tool?”

Leashless brings a fl uidity to ice climbing that can only be found in being able to let go of your ice tool to swap hands, shake out, place gear or do whatever you please. Climbing sans leashes is like climbing a rock route with jug holds everywhere you look. Grab a hold and rest. Place gear if you need to. Nothing will get in your way or slow you down as you place that screw.
Certainly you must know when to climb Leashless. Ouray or some of the Front Range ice crags are perfect because a dropped tool won’t bring an Epic. But some of the best in the sport are pushing the limits us-ing tethers so a tool won’t plum-met into the void.
