Lieutenant General Frank MaxwellAndrews

Frank Maxwell Andrews (Feb. 3,1884-May 3, 1943), military leaderand commander, was one of thefounders of the United States AirForce. He replaced Dwight D.Eisenhower as head of the UnitedStates forces in the EuropeanTheater of Operations in the earlystages of World War II. As anoutspoken and early proponent ofairpower, Frank Maxwell Andrews’slegacy is far-reaching. The JointBase Andrews in Maryland (thehome base for the presidentialaircraft, Air Force One), AndrewsBarracks in Germany, GeneralAndrews Airport in Santo Domingo, and Andrews Avenue in thePhilippines, are all eponymouslynamed for him.

Frank Maxwell Andrew’scontribution to the United Statesmilitary would certainly have beeneven greater had he not beentragically killed in an aircraftaccident in Iceland in 1943.

Born in Nashville, Tennessee,Andrews comes from a notableTennessee family, as the great-great-nephew of two Tennessee

governors, John C. Brown and NeillS. Brown. His family has long beenassociated with the history ofNashville. His father James DavidAndrews, of English descent, was awell known newspaper publisherand real estate dealer in Nashville. His family amassed a fine silvercollection, from which this piececomes. The collection also includesTiffany pieces owned by John C.Brown that have descended in thefamily until they will be offered byFreeman’s on May 2nd.

Rundell, Bridge, and Rundell

Phillip Rundell (1746-1827)assembled one of Britain’s mostimportant and successful silvermanufacturing businesses andemployed some of the mostdistinguished craftsmen of his day.The success of the business wasdue in large part to his partnershipwith John Bridge (1755-1834),whose close relationship with KingGeorge IV allowed him to be afacilitator in the king’s search forgrandeur. It was Bridge who wasresponsible for guiding the King inthe assemblage of his magnificentcollection of gold and silver objects.

The firm became regular suppliersto the Royal Family, and as the RoyalGoldsmiths, Rundell, Bridge, andRundell became synonymous withthe Imperial style in silver reflectedin the enhanced pride of Britain atthe time. In 1807, the talentedsilversmith, Paul Storr, joined thefirm, followed by the leadingsculptors, William Theed and JohnFlaxman. The impressive JohnBridge centerpiece at handrepresents the extraordinarycollaboration of artist, modeler, andsilversmith.

As the first professor of sculpture atthe Royal Academy, John Flaxmanidentified himself as a sculptor, though he was highly regarded forhis design drawings, and inparticular those of figural groups. Hewas employed by Rundell, Bridge, and Rundell as the firm’s designerand modeler for the most importantpieces, most notably ‘The Shield ofAchilles’ (Royal Collection) createdfor George IV’s Coronation Banquet. The three Classical figures on thepresent John Bridge centerpiecerepresent Bacchus and twomaenads, and can be compared tofigures designed by Flaxman. Afigure of Orpheus, very similar to theBacchus figure here, can be seen on

a later pair of silver-gilt candelabra, modeled by Edward Hodges Baileyand marked for Philip Rundell, 1820(Sold at Phillip's New York, April 16,1982, Lot 240).

The exquisite foliage and shell feeton the present centerpiece can betraced back to tureens produced byRoëttiers Goldsmiths. Very similarfeet appear on The SalisburyCandelabrum, presented by PhillipRundell to Lord Salisbury in 1821.Another pair of identical feet can beseen on a soup tureen from thedinner service created for BernardHoward, 12th Duke of Norfolk(Hartop, Christopher. RoyalGoldsmiths, the Art of Rundell &Bridge 1797-1843, p. 67).

The presence of the tropical tree, around which the three figuresdance, is unusual. A closecomparison can be found on the‘Judgment of Paris’ centerpiece, made by Paul Storr for the BaronHenrique Teixeira de Sampaio ofLisbon, Portugal. This largecenterpiece, housed at the MarbleHouse in Newport, RI, is centeredby a palm tree, similar to that of thetree-form standard anchoring thisJohn Bridge centerpiece.
