Welcome

It is with great pride and pleasure that we welcome the public to the Carl Nielsen International Chamber Music Competition 2019.

This year the competition is being held for the second time, and from the 47 young ensembles from all over the world who have applied to participate, 16 have been selected to compete this week for future engagements and prizes worth almost DKK 500,000.

Three of Denmark’s major cultural institutions – DR, The Royal Danish Library and The Royal Danish Academy of Music – have organized the competition, because we have a strong wish to disseminate Carl Nielsen’s music even more widely than today, and how can this be done better than by inviting an array of talented young musicians from all over the world to interpret his music?

Competitions and music make up an oddly self-contradictory mixture, for music is precisely not competition, but an art in which words and specific goals

stand aside in favour of the moods and emotions evoked by the notes in every human being.

If we nevertheless choose the competition form, it is because in our experience this is how we can attract attention to and turn the focus on both Carl Nielsen and the young participating ensembles.

It is our hope that audiences, listeners and streaming viewers will enjoy the many hours with the talented musicians, and that their energy, enthusiasm and skills will show us new sides of Nielsen’s music, so that our highly qualified judges can choose the right winners at the end of the week.

Our warmest thanks to Carl Nielsen Legatet for their generous support of the project.

Enjoy!

Musikerne i Quintette Promenade fandt i 2016 sammen i symfoniorkestret i Toulouse.

The Quintette Promenade met up at the Orchestre National in Toulouse in 2016. As they studied pedagogy, as well as art appreciation, they learned to use new ways of communicating with their audience. They use this to integrate contemporary music to their performances and to play in unusual places such as mountain refuges, hospitals or prisons. This season they are creating a show for children combining music and theatre.

V Coloris blev dannet på Det Kgl. Danske Musikkonservatorium i 2017.

V Coloris was founded at The Royal Danish Academy of Music in 2017. The name means ‘a mix of colors’ and is expressed in the way they play and think music – they aim for playing lively, varied and in respect of the different styles and genres by taking advantage of the members’ different nationalities and backgrounds. Repertoire-wise they like searching for less well-known works to supplement the standard repertoire.
