Prep School Principal Grade R boys are a wonder to behold! I have been teaching for 30 years and every time I visit them or

even watch from afar, they inspire me. Their effervescent demeanor and relentless optimism humbles

me. It is these little snapshots that allow me to reflect on the importance of being optimistic in all facets of

my life. I share a few points from “Positive Parenting” and a quote that I have staring at me from the fridge

door, that I read when I feel that shadow of pessimism and the blame game darkening my reality.

“You can raise a child to be optimistic. Research has demonstrated that optimism is one of the strongest

predictors of adult happiness.

Sometimes we think of optimism as a superficial quality, when in fact it is anything but. Optimism is tough,

much more so than pessimism and its weak cousin cynicism, because it has to be in order to survive. If it

weren’t, it would wither after just a few setbacks.

Pessimism is like tar, the more you touch it the more it sticks to you. Try not to coat your children with

pessimism and cynicism. We adults have to be very, very careful, because they’re watching us all the

time, and they pick up all our signs and vibes!

A researcher by the name of Seligman has shown that optimism can be learned, at any age - the younger

the better.

If your child develops a mental attitude that no matter what happens, he can find a way to a good

outcome, that attitude becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy.

If one of the great gifts a parent can give a child is the habit of optimism, how can we hope to do that if we

don’t practice the habit ourselves?

“Optimists are right. So are pessimists. It’s up to you to choose which one you will be”.

- Harvey Mackay.

Wishing all our Grade 9, 10 and 11 boys who are currently on the various grade excursions all the best.

Warm regards,

VICTOR WHITE

PREPARATORY SCHOOL PRINCIPAL

The Grade 2 boys enjoyed their first full-day school excursion last week where they also got to challenge

themselves and learn new skills at Spirit of Adventure.

From completing obstacle courses, crawling through the ‘snake’ pit and even

abseiling down the dam wall! What a wonderful and memorable experience it

was for them.

Well done to Jonathan Hoarau (above left) and Ethan Lyne (centre) (both Grade 6) who were selected to

the KZN Primary Schools Aquatics Team. Joshua Balfour (right) (Grade 8) was also selected. We wish

them luck as they participate in an interprovincial gala on 1 and 2 October at Kings Park Pool in Durban.

Good luck, gents!

News & Events

Congratulates

Todd Howard who won the Player of the Match award with a

brilliant performance by scoring 8 goals in a 14-all draw be-

tween South Africa and Egypt at the U18 Water Polo World

Championships. William Dowsett was also part of the team.

Both our Grade 8 and Junior (Grade 10)

debating teams who won their respective

Durban Coastal Debating Leagues on

Tuesday evening. Well done, gents!

The Grade 7’s were treated to a Science show

by Dr Megandhren Govender. He is a highly

qualified gentleman who has made it his mission

to take Science to the masses in a fun and

exciting way.

The Clifton boys are performing in their own

Science Expo show later in the term and this

was a great way to give them a little taster of

what they could do.

“Doctor G” froze biscuits and balloons in liquid

nitrogen, levitated a polystyrene ball with a

hairdryer and the favourite one was when he

shot a methane rocket across the room! We

won’t be having fire hazards in our Expo though!

The Grade 4’s headed up

to the basketball courts to

take a more ‘active’

approach to music theory

in class music.

Here they are learning

where the different note

names are on the music

stave.

Clifton hosted the Annual isiZulu Festival with our friends

from DGC and Crawford La Lucia joining us for the day.

The Festival took place in the Sutcliffe Theatre. Everyone

got to taste isiZulu food, sing and listen to others singing

isiZulu songs, and perform and listen to isiZulu stories.

All the boys, girls and teachers dressed for the day in

traditional elements of the isiZulu culture.

The Grade 10 students

completed two days of

community service in and

around Underberg. Having

given generously of their time

and put in a lot of hard work,

they settled safely back in

camp.

Our grateful thanks to all the

staff and children of the six

schools and the Kulungile

Children’s Home, who shared

this time with our young men.

The Clifton lads have now

begun the second part of

their excursion: hiking in the

Cobham Reserve.

And while the Grade 10 lads have been up in the Underberg

area, the Grade 11 gents have been down at TO Strand on

a leadership course and the Grade 9’s at Spirit of Adventure.

(See photos on next page).

The Grade 5 boys enjoyed a day out at Crocodile Creek

where they got ‘up close and personal’ with various reptiles!

The Clifton Uniform Shop encourages parents to donate school uniform items that their boys may have outgrown. They are specifically in need of ties and tracksuits.

For Red Ant and Prep parents, they have a huge stock of good quality safari suit jackets and pants at silly prices!

Also on sale are suppporters caps, beanies, cushions, umbrellas and lunch boxes.
