Nicole’s mother Ally says they wanted to be transparent and let everyone know what Nicole was doing with the funds and they have received a lot of re-ally positive feedback.“One lady who comes into the cafe gave me a card saying she thought it was a nice idea to donate the money to Ad-elaide,” Nicole says.Adelaide’s father, Andrew Ketel says they were deeply touched by Nicole’s donation which epitomised the gener-

osity of the Wakefield community. “It’s wonderful that teenagers think so much about other people,” Andrew says. But Nicole is not the only young person to help out Adelaide and her family. “We had a primary schoolboy, Luke Perry, who is only nine, help out,” An-drew says. “Luke set up a stall at the Wakefield market and he used the pro-ceeds to take Ava and Elliot (Adelaide’s brother and sister) out to Natureland for the day while we were in hospital in Christchurch with Adelaide.

“Luke also used the proceeds to buy Ad-elaide some books to read on the plane to Christchurch. It was an incredible thing to do and very humbling.”Andrew says they are so grateful to Nicole, Luke and everyone else who helped raise $18,336 at the Aiding Adelaide fundraiser held at Wakefield School last month. He says Adelaide has now finished her chemotherapy and was due to go back to Christchurch this week for an MRI scan that will determine the next step in her treatment.

“I would not like to see this happen without a great deal of in-depth information, our rates are very expensive here, people need to be very in-formed.”

Shona Brougham, Richmond.

“We have no choice I guess, it will happen. It will be very difficult for families trying to make ends meet.”

Lynn Vibert, Richmond.

“I am against it. I would like to see the money being put towards individual water sup-ply, for example, a water tank so we could all be more self-sufficient.”

Murray Cederman, Appleby.

“It has got to happen, long-term we need to look at wa-ter supply, the Waimea Plains need to be fed plus it keeps people employed.”

What are your thoughts on the Lee Valley Dam proposal? Do you think it should be built?

block owners, Trevor Palmer and Cathy Hughson, are also considering their futures as they face annual rates increase of between $5800 and $9800 for their Lower Queen Street properties.“I certainly couldn’t afford to keep doing what we are doing here, just raising a few sheep and cattle,” Trevor says. “We’d have to intensify to make the land pay but then it would be-come a life sentence block and not a lifestyle block - I don’t even know if there is anything we could grow that would pay for such a big rates increase anyway.”Cathy says they only use part of their water allocation and she “can’t see the point of paying that sort of money for water we aren’t going to use”. “It would mean we would have to intensify but we don’t want to change the way we operate - we just want a few horses and some cattle.”Cathy says they are also reluc-tant to intensify for environ-mental reasons. She says the ground water on the Waimea Plains already has excessively high nitrate levels and they don’t want to contribute to that by applying fertilisers to in-crease productivity. Chairperson of the Irrigators and Water Users group which represents small water consent

holders on the Waimea Plains, Mary Ellen O’Connor agrees that many lifestyle block own-ers “simply don’t have the yield to meet these costs” and says the proposed rates increases are “totally unaffordable.”“Waimea Irrigators and Water Users continue to oppose the dam and call on the TDC to fully investigate alternatives,” she says.Tasman district Mayor Rich-ard Kempthorne, says he can appreciate the concerns of the group and that those issues need to be discussed during the public consultation process that started on Monday. “They need to come along and find out all the information and tell us what they think. It’s the biggest issue facing the Tasman district and it will be divisive so consultation will be very im-portant.”

Although landowners who hold consents to take water for irrigation face the biggest increases, all Tasman district ratepayers will have to pay in-cluding residential, commer-cial and industrial usersRates increases for a $485,000 Richmond residential property will be from $206 to $400 while a Brightwater residential prop-erty valued at $425,000 rates will face a rates increase from $206 to $400. A Richmond in-dustrial property valued at $5.8 million will face a rates increas-es from $5953 to $8852.Public submissions on the pro-posed funding and governance of the dam are open until No-vember 14 while a series of in-formation sessions and public meetings will be held around the district starting in the council chambers Richmond this Monday at 1pm.

Salisbury School has received some positive news after “a very tough four years” with the Minis-try of Education confirming that the school will stay open despite a declining roll and nine staff losing their jobs at the end of last term.Staff and students at the Richmond school have been on a rollercoaster ride since the Minister of Educa-tion, Hekia Parata, tried to close the residential education care cen-tre for girls with special needs in October 2012. But last week principal Brenda Ellis and chair of the board of trustees, Julia O’Connor, told the Waimea Weekly that they had “a very posi-tive meeting with the secretary of education, Peter Hughes, who con-firmed that there is no intention to close Salisbury”. Julia says they also discussed changes to the school’s enrolment process after concerns that the roll had fallen from 71 in 2011 to just 15 this year. The Ministry of Edu-cation determines the enrolments after parents apply to have their children attend Salisbury. “We have also started working with the Min-istry on changes to the enrolment

process with the goal of increasing the number of students enrolled at Salisbury next year,” she says.Brenda says they have been en-couraged by the discussions with Peter and senior Ministry of Edu-cation staff which suggest “there has been a very positive shift” in favour of Salisbury”. “I definitely get the feeling that the Ministry of Education is listening to the parents and recognising the valuable role of residential educa-tion - we are very hopeful for the future,” Brenda says. However, Brenda says the school unfortunately had to make nine staff redundant at the end of last term following funding cuts to all of the country’s residential schools. “But there were no cuts in teaching staff or teacher sides. It was all to residential and support staff.”Brenda says the school had also re-ceived good news from the Educa-tion Review Office last term when it gave Salisbury a “fabulous” re-port.

Property insightsBuilding Consents & Building PermitsWhat is the difference?

Prior to mid-1992 council issued applicants with a building permit. They completed the required building inspections when requested by the builder and added the notes to the file.

The building act changed mid-1993 and applications for building works now became a building consent and with it a requirement to have a Code Compliance Certificate (C.C.C). On the completion of the building work there is a requirement from the property owner to apply for a C.C.C. There is a final inspection, completed by council, who approve the issue of the C.C.C, which is recorded in the property’s council file.

The majority of the 1992 building regulations were revoked when the Building Reforms Regulations (2004) were introduced in March 2005.

Nelson police are playing down concerns about messages on Facebook that man ap-proached two young children in Gilbert Street in Richmond earlier this month. The initial alert was emailed to Waimea Neighbourhood Support groups around Richmond after reports that a man ap-proached two young children and tried to entice them into his vehicle near Hen-ley School. Waimea Neighbourhood Sup-port coordinator, Marty Price, sent out the email saying that the incident occurred on Gilbert St in Richmond on October 4. The email stated that a red utility ap-proached the children, aged four and six,

on Gilbert St and a man opened the door and tried to entice the children into the car. It stated that the children ran back into their property and inside their house and the man followed them onto the property by opening the gate before driving off. The email was posted on Facebook and was seen by a number of Richmond parents and teachers who are now taking extra precautions with their children. “I wasn’t aware of this incident until I read about it on Facebook the other night,” par-ent Jennifer Marshall says. “I am definitely aware of the danger now.” Mel Shirley and Sheree Sherlock say they

had also seen the Facebook message after it was shared by friends and that “the word has spread around.”Henley School principal John Armstrong says he has “been in touch with the Nelson and Richmond police and at this stage we have not released a notice”. He says police are keeping the school informed and he will be “guided by them once the matter has been fully investigated”.Nelson police Constable, Bronwyn Inglis says they are investigating the report and would like to speak to a male seen in the vicinity of Gilbert St, Richmond on the Monday, October 6 between 4:30pm and

5:30pm. She says the man approached a property with two children playing in the front yard and on seeing the man the chil-dren have become frightened and run in-side - the man was reported as travelling in a red utility possibly with a canopy on the back. However, Bronwyn says “it is unclear what the man’s intentions were when he ap-proached the children”. Anyone who has any information about the report or knows the driver of this vehi-cle please contact Bronwyn at the Nelson Police on 546 3840 or make contact anony-mously through crime stoppers.

HELPING KIDS READ: The Richmond Pub-lic Library is holding a free presentation for parents and caregivers of children aged eight to 12 who are having problems encourag-ing their children to read. Children’s librarian Lucy Brunwin says learning to read can be a tortuous process for some children so she will demonstrate library material designed to break the barriers to reading. The free presentation will be at the Tasman District Library on Oc-tober 22 from 7.30pm to 8.30pm. Pre-booking is required. For more info contact Lucy on 543 8500.

HOUSE PRICES INCREASE: The median price of houses in Richmond in September in-creased 22 per cent from $395,000 to $483,150 the last year according to the latest Real Estate Institute of New Zealand figures. The median price for September is 24 per cent higher than the August median of $387,500. In Nelson city the median price fell one per cent in the last year from $357,000 to $353,5000.

SPEED ZONE CHANGED: The New Zealand Transport Agency has temporarily reduced the speed limit past Appleby School through the State Highway 60 intersection with Moutere Highway and Cotterell Rd from 100kmh to 80kmh while it looks into further safety meas-ures. NZTA’s Mark Owen says the intersection has a concerning rate of crashes, predominant-ly over the summer months.

Animals, mythical creatures, energy and power themed designs will be amongst the creations entered in this year’s Nelson Masked Parade. The theme is Earth, Wind and Fire and categories include best school, best group non-school and best individual with the Kim Merry Supreme award plus $500 cash given to the overall winner. Brightwater School started working on their fire themed costumes last term and the children are all excited and looking forward to the parade.

“Our theme is Phoenix rising out of the ashes and we have music, choreographed dance and actions that the children will be doing throughout the parade. Participation and see-ing the children having fun is our goal,” says Paul Lėmon, teacher at Brightwater School. The iconic parade, now in its 20th year takes place on Friday October 17 and starts at 5.30pm in Montgom-ery Square. It will continue through Bridge St, Trafalgar St, Hardy St, Morrison St, Selwyn Pl and Church Lane.

Getting the best deal for our kids, having a voice and keeping it real for our communities is high on the list of priorities for Barbara Bowen, new-ly appointed executive committee member of the New Zealand Principals Federation. The New Zealand Principals Federation rep-resents more than 2,300 principals within the education sector. Barbara believes that being on the executive committee and having a voice will benefit the Nelson region as it can some-times be a little isolated.Barbara was elected onto the New Zealand Principals Fed-eration executive committee by her peers. “It is nice to think you have the support of your colleagues and have what it takes to represent them” Barbara says.Barbara, Principal of Lower Moutere School has been a teacher for 27 years and a principal for 12 years, with the majority of that time spent within the Nelson region. “It is a really good profession, an important one that involves respect and responsibility, the job is so rewarding and I really enjoy the commu-nity spirit aspect” Barbara says. She is looking forward to working on issues such as investing in educational success, Novo-pay and assessing the community’s needs and wants against government policy.

A third Nelson bar has had its tip jar stolen and it is believed the same man is behind each of the thefts. The Vic Brew Bar had its tip jar stolen on Thursday evening and bar operations manager Howie Williams says there was “at least several hundred dollars” in it. It follows similar thefts in the past month at the Sprig & Fern on Hardy St and 623 in the City.A man was arrested by police in relation to the Sprig & Fern theft but it is believed he didn’t turn up to his court appear-ance, although police were unable to confirm this in time for our print dead-

line. Howie says they’ve passed the secu-rity camera footage onto police, as well

as uploading it to their Facebook page. He says several people have commented on the page or called him to tell him the name of the man and he says it appears to be the same person who stole tip jars from the other Nelson bars. “We’ve had people call us and tell us who he is and where he lives so the public have been really helpful.”Howie says money from the tip jars is collected over time and then counted and split amongst the front of house staff. He says staff usually get between $80 to $100 each and it’s a “nice little bonus”.

Much loved teddy bears, toys, clothing and books were amongst the items for sale at this year’s Richmond Kids Market.Children were encouraged to clean out their cupboards and put aside toys, books and clothes they no longer used to sell at their market stall.Stall holder Georgie Webber, of Hope, says she has gone through her whole room and taken out stuff that she doesn’t

use or need. “I’ve sold two t-shirts, some bracelets and a couple of books,” she says. The market, organised and hosted by Grace Church in Richmond, started last year and was such a success, they decided to make it an annual event.

“Stall holders are really happy, it is a good holiday event and great for the kids to run their own stall and make some pocket money during the school holidays,” says Sandy Hitchens, Grace Church’s Re-vive coordinator. The event was enjoyed by par-ents too, with a bouncy castle and toys on offer to occupy the children while adults re-laxed with coffee and cake at the Revive cafe.

Hundreds of yellow rubber ducks took to the Maitai River last weekend, in a fundraising event for St John Nelson. Not all of the ducks survived the race to the Colling-wood St Bridge unscathed, but even so, it was a great turn out for the emergency services group who managed to raise just on $7000 for their cause. The St John duck race was held for the first time last year to provide some variety in their efforts to raise funds. “We wanted to do something fun in Nelson that perhaps attracted different people to support St John and enjoy the Maitai river setting,” says organ-iser Sarah McCabe.Crowe Horwath’s “Scrooge McDuck” won the cor-porate duck race with Ray White’s houseboat win-ning best dressed.

By Jono Martin, Richmond New LifeTwo hundred years ago, a man arrived on the shore of New Zealand carrying something that would forever change the course, flavour and history of this land, Aotearoa, the Land of the Long White Cloud. This man’s name was Samuel Marsden and he landed at Oihi, in the Bay of Plenty on Christ-mas day, 1814.While travelling to New Zealand on his ship, Marsden had met and befriended a young Maori lad by the name of Ruatara, the son of a local chief at Oihi.At Ruatara’s invitation, Marsden went ashore and in front of a large gathering of local Mao-ri, with Ruatara translating, Samuel Marsden preached the “gospel message” of Jesus Christ.Marsden taught that God created us and that He loves us greatly. He taught that sin separates us from having a relationship with God so God did something so amazing and radical to make a way that we can know Him again. He taught that Jesus Christ died on the cross to take the punishment for each of our sins so that we would not have to. He taught that Jesus then rose again from the dead proving that He was the Son of God and that He has power over sin and death.Marsden taught Jesus’ message of forgiveness and reconciliation with each other and with God and he taught of a whole new way of living that revolutionises every individual and every nation that genuinely embraces Jesus Christ. This was the beginning of the teachings of Jesus Christ being taken through our land. Change came as individuals, family groups, tribes and early settlers responded to this message that was increasingly proclaimed up and down our land. This message of Jesus Christ, with its sto-ry of forgiveness, reconciliation and change, of-fers you and I the same life-giving transforma-tion that it offered to our forebearers 200 years ago on the shores of this land. They responded to it… and it changed their lives and the lives of generations to come for the better. Will you?

Community spirit:Cute moment that I witnessed today. I was

heading out to Monaco this af-ternoon when I saw a police car parked facing the wrong way on Songer St. As I got closer, I saw a lemonade stand with two kids pouring drinks and ex-changing them for money with the policemen inside. Beauti-ful community spirit. Paula M Cunniffe.

Congrats to the youths of Nelson for using so-

Glen James opening:On Saturday, we had the grand opening of our

new store, which was featured in Nelson Weekly last week. I just want to say a huge thank

you to everybody who came along. It was a massive turn-out and we were really happy to see so many people check out the new studio and have the chance to meet JJ, Mike and Dom from The Edge. Thanks again, Glen James.

Lee Valley Dam:I was disgusted about the article in the Waimea

Weekly about the Lee Valley Dam and how it’s going to cost us rate payers a lot. Said we are going to be shocked!! It makes me so angry....Jennie Teece.

Last week, news came out that the organisers of the ICC Cricket World Cup had performed a U-turn and relaxed their exclusive use of Saxton Field’s athletics track, allowing local athletes to use their track for all but 19 days of summer. It’s fantastic that common sense has prevailed. In February this year, Waimea Weekly broke the story that the In-ternational Cricket Council had a signed agreement with Nelson City Council for exclusive rights over the cricket oval and the ground around it, including the athletes track, for almost 50 days. The exclusivity period stretched from January 26 to March 15, the peak of the athletics season. At the time, athletics coaches com-mented that it would ruin the sea-son and Waimea Weekly took a strong stand, urging the ICC to back down over the proposal.Last week they did. It’s great news for our local athletes because there was no other option as far as a decent track for them, and it’s even better for cricket world cup organisers because the exclu-sive use of the track has been the only contentious issue surrounding it. Now that it’s sorted, the region

can look forward to hosting the biggest cricket games to ever be played here.Anthony Crummy, general man-ager for the world cup in New Zealand, says the exclusive period was needed for planning and now they’ve been able to do that and re-lax the number of days they need exclusive access to the track. “Sax-ton Oval is shaping up to be one of the stars of what is now among the world’s largest sporting events. This means we have to be water-tight in our planning, but the po-sition we’re in now means we can accommodate most of the needs of the athletics community and make this an even better summer for the people of Nelson,” he says.Nelson’s deputy mayor Paul Mathe-son commented that it’s a real cred-it to the world cup organisers “that they’ve been able to accommodate the needs of other local sporting codes”, and he’s dead right. Well done ICC, well done Nelson City Council. Now we can really get excited about the world cup and be thrilled that Nelson is a part of it.

On October 4, eleven mem-bers of the Rugby Section went on an overnight rugby trip to watch Buller verse West Coast, after a good breakfast at Stoutys. A break at the Hope Saddle of-fered the chance to get out and stretch the legs, along with a few snow balls that got thrown. It snowed off and on until Murchison where it then began raining, but that didn’t seem to worry them. After checking into some great rooms at the Cosmo-politan Hotel in Westport they were off to the rugby.

Buller tried to dominate the game but West Coast had other ideas, rattling the Buller backs. It was certainly a pressure game as the two provinces battled on, but it

was Buller who ran out the winners 29 to 24. The post-match sau-sage and bacon sand-

wiches were much ap-preciated.

A huge thanks to Stouty and Bill McCullum for getting the team there and back safely, and Nelson Mini Bus Hire for a great van, the Cosmopolitan Hotel for the hospitality and the great whitebait breakfast on Sunday morning.

Come and enjoy yourself at Club Waimea as they host their Wednesday night dinners alongside

Elizabeth Cathering. Starting from 22 October, the menu items will rotate each week, but a minimum of 5 items per week will

be on the menu including:

Up until the weekend just gone the wind has proved painful, but a re-prieve was due and the last week-end of the school holidays has been a stunner. As the weather improves, the boat ramps around the region should start seeing plenty of action.Nelson boat ramp was one good example, with the car park full and a few parked in Akersten St, on both Saturday and Sunday. It would appear from fishing re-ports that the snapper were patchy on the longlines, with the carpet shark and spiny dog brigade mak-ing up the catch. Fish that were caught, though, were out deep. The water temperature is on the rise in Tasman Bay, but still only around 14 degrees and will need a couple of weeks to get closer to the magical 18 degree mark. Hopefully, they will be on song for Labour weekend.Kenepuru has produced some large snapper in the last two weeks, but fishing is still quite patchy and there would appear to be a bit of a

shark plague at the moment and a lot of patience is required.Catches of good blue cod, terakhi, and gurnard were also reported from around Delaware Bay. No sign of any Kingfish yet but they won’t be too far away either. Don’t forget the Marlborough Sounds area for blue cod is cur-rently closed until 19 December, to protect the core spawning season. Within this area, fishers can only take, or possess, two blue cod per fisher at any one time. This applies even if you caught the fish over more than one day, fished outside the Marlborough Sounds area, or you are transporting the fish through the area. You can only have blue cod be-tween 30cm and 35cm long. You must not fillet blue cod unless you eat them immediately. Any blue cod eaten form part of your daily limit. You must not use more than two hooks per fishing line when fishing for any finfish species.

The Nelson Grey Power Asso-ciation has just completed a re-structure of the way it operates, which will enable it to become a more modern and important community organisation. This is the completion of a pro-cess that began when I became President in October 2012. At that time the association was in a run down state. I was elected as President on a mandate to make Nelson Grey Power a re-spected and professional com-munity organisation and over the past 12 months actions to achieve this have been taken, including moving to a new more modern office and intro-ducing new technology. A com-

prehensive review of the way the Association was operating has been recently completed, and this has led the way to re-defining our future staffing needs to ensure we achieve the ultimate objective of making Nelson Grey Power an organisation capable of providing an increased range of support services to its members. The image of Grey Power and its value as a com-munity organisation has been gradually changing for the bet-ter and it must, through its fu-ture performance, show that it has credibility and is a widely-

respected voice for the region’s older people. The community strategic plan we initiated in

May this year, working with 45 of the regions organisations involved in older age care, is an example of the role we must play in working collectively to address the many issues facing older persons that lie ahead. The restructure

will assist to make Nelson Grey Power capable of being at the forefront of community devel-opment for the future good of all of our members. I believe we can do a lot more to help sup-port our older people.

Dog owners are being warned not to take their dogs to parts of the Maitai River, after a “prolif-eration” of the toxic blue-green algae.Cyanobacteria, also known as blue-green algae, has grown and proliferated in shallow ar-eas of the Maitai River at Maitai Camp and in the lower Maitai after several weeks of little rain, says Nelson City Council.“Cyanobacteria mats are now approaching significant levels

in areas of the lower Maitai. As a precautionary approach, dog owners should not allow their dogs to swim in any areas of the Maitai, or drink from the river, where cyanobacteria is present, until advised otherwise,” says a council spokesperson.Cyanobacteria produces the neurotoxin anatoxin, which is potentially lethal to dogs, stock and humans, when ingested in large amounts. Dogs that are known to eat the

algae are most at risk. Because the algae is a naturally-occurring bacteria there is little that can be done to remove it, apart from waiting for signifi-cant rain which increases the water flow and washes the algae away. There have been no reports of problems in other rivers around the region and dog owners are advised to swim their pets in the permitted area at Tahu-nanui Beach.

From little things, big things grow For many years now there has been one family name that goes hand-in-hand with the grocery industry in Richmond, and that is the Watsons. Not only has Fresh Choice been keeping fresh, qual-ity food on local familie’s tables, it has a history that goes all the way back to the early 1050s. Ivan Watson and his wife Lyalla moved to Richmond from Canter-bury and for the next 18 years ran their grocery business, Richmond Super Dis-count; on the corner of Queen and Cam-bridge streets. Locals would come daily to get their fresh bread, sliced cheese, fresh veges and all manner of other household items. By 1975, Ivan had handed the reins over to his son Ian, who shifted the shop down the road to 259 Queen St and for another 11 years the store continued its dedicated service to the local custom-ers, expanding its range of groceries and goods to meet the demand of a growing Richmond population. In 1986, Ian made the final move to the current location in what had been named the Village Mall and in 2003, his sons Gary and Matt, the third generation of Watsons, stepped up to continue the legacy that their grandfather, Ivan, had created 46 years ago. Fresh Choice has seen some significant

changes from its beginnings in the 50s to the present day but current owners Gary and Lisa Watson are certain that one thing will remain constant, their com-mitment to providing customers with the best in fresh, local produce and qual-ity grocery items.

Fresh Choice here and nowWhen the Watson family grocery busi-ness started in Richmond, it was a vastly

different industry to what we know to-day. From un-sliced bread and phone orders to computerised checkouts and electronic ticketing, Fresh Choice has changed with the times; developing the look of its store and the technology it uses to make shopping easier and enjoy-able for its customers. In 2008, the store underwent a huge improvement project that saw the addi-tion of larger display cabinets, enhanced

Lisa and Gary Watson are proud to be owners of Fresh Choice Richmond and to carry on the Fresh Choice legacy that was started by Ivan and Lyalla Watson (inset) in the 50s.

store layout, more checkout aisles, including a Lotto ticket station and the extension of their wine and beer section. The store is constantly working to be the best it can be for shoppers and most recently their changes have seen new shelves, a new ticketing system, logo, uniform and paint job. With improved shelving comes the advantage of more products and Gary is proud to offer his customers an even bigger range with 2000 new products in store. Their electron-ic ticketing system is an exciting new addition

that works the same way as a kindle eBook and unless it’s changing prices, it uses no power day to day. As you walk down the aisles you’ll see the new electronic shelf labelling which allows prices to be changed and specials to be displayed from one computer source that simultaneously connects to the checkouts, meaning everything is in perfect synchronisation. Fresh Choice is also proud to offer its customers a diabetic section along with some of the largest ranges in wine, craft beer and Gluten free foods

Stirling Sports Richmond has been a leading local name in active wear and outdoor equip-ment for 14 years but new changes to the busi-ness mean exciting things for owners Dave and Sandy Heyward, and for their customers. Previously, the store occupied a building on Queen St which was originally established as the Richmond Sports Depot in the mid 70’s and became Stirling Sports in 2008. The prem-ises continues to serve the area with quality outdoor equipment, while Stirling Sports has made the move across the street and into the Richmond Mall. You may not see fishing rods or rifles at Stir-ling Sports anymore, but what you will notice

is a modernised shop that now allows Dave and Sandy, also owners of the Nelson store, to showcase their active clothing range to a larger extent, which was previously lost amongst the hunting and fishing equipment.Located right beside the Pak ‘n Save entrance, Stirling Sports has transformed from a dated sport and outdoor equipment store, into a modern and stylish business with a focus on offering customers the best range of fashion-able and functional clothes to suit their active lifestyles. With top brands from Nike, Under Armour, Converse and exciting new lines from Adidas Original and Lorna Jane, there is some-thing for everyone and stock you definitely

Stirling Sports Richmond staff in the new store which opens today. They are, from left, Dave, Sandy and Kirsty Heyward and Natasha Regenvanu.

won’t find in other sports stores around town. Their new brands are already causing a stir says Dave. “We’ve had some ladies who know the Lorna Jane name who are just so excited that we’re going to be stocking the clothes.” For those who aren’t familiar with the name, Lorna Jane is an Australian label in world-leading ac-tive wear, created to help women stay fit and healthy and get more out of their lives. It’s a brand with a difference because it goes hand in hand with its own philosophy of Active Liv-ing that has inspired many women across the world and is now available here in Richmond. Their goal to create a point of difference within the fashion and sporting world has seen them gain offers from several different brands to stock a range of elevated products that are not available to just any retailer. Customers are now able to come into Stirling Sports and ex-perience a collection of the latest clothing and gear that they won’t find anywhere else in Nel-son. While the changes between the new and old Stirling Sports are significant, their values and guarantees when it comes to customer service are still the same. “Our staff are going to be re-ally helpful. The aim is to assist as best as we can,” says Dave. “We want them to walk out the door thinking ‘hey Stirling Sports are great, I’ll be back.’ We really want to be focused on the customers.”

They are still a highly family orientated sports shop with everything their customers need, whether they’re five years old or 70. Dave and Sandy encourage everyone to come and visit their new store and see for themselves the massive makeover that Stirling Sports has undergone. The fashion focused, contemporary store showcases the best in active wear and the staff are more than happy to help you find the best product and best fit to suit your require-ments. The staff know the gear, they wear it and with a customer friendly layout, everyone can enjoy the comfort and professionalism of deal-ing with the Stirling Sports Richmond team.Stirling Sports are open now, so come and see the friendly team in the mall. They’re located right beside the entrance to Pak ‘n Save, plus, their opening deals include four $500 vouch-ers to give away. All you have to do is make a purchase and you’ll go into the draw, with win-ners to be announced each week of November. With Christmas just round the corner it could be just what you need to get presents in order, but you have to be in to win, so get shopping. Locally owned and operated, Stirling Sports is the right place to go to kit yourself out in gear to get active, or to choose the perfect present for someone this Christmas from one of their top product lines. Being in the mall they’re now open seven days and are looking forward to helping you with all your sporting pursuits.

Stirling Sports, now located in the Richmond Mall, stock a huge range of top quality brands and are particularly excited about the introduction of the new range of Lorna Jane sportswear.

KEEP COOL THIS SUMMER

Wakefield indoor bowler Clive Johnston just keeps getting better with age, win-ning his first Champion of Champions title this season after 33 years in the sport.Clive, who is 82, ended the season on a high note be-ing made a life member of the Wakefield Club after winning the Champion of Champions men’s singles title and helping his club take out the Nelson Sixes. Although Clive has won the Wakefield Club’s men’s sin-gles a number of times it was the first year he has entered the Champion of Champi-ons competition.“I don’t know how many times I’ve won our club singles but it’s been quite a few. I’ve probably been a bit greedy there but it was the first time I’ve entered the Champion of Champions so I had a bit of beginners luck.”

And there could be more to come with Clive saying he intends to keep playing as long as he is fit and healthy.“That’s why it’s such a good game for everyone because you can carry on with it at any age. I’m ancient but as long as I have reasonable health and fitness I’ll be able to foot it with most of them.”Clive also enjoys helping the younger generation of the club’s players learn the craft including his son, Michael who has won five national titles, and grandson Caleb. He has also coached promis-ing brothers, Ryan and Blair Eggers, who have won the last four Nelson under-18 singles titles and were mem-bers of the successful Wake-field team that won the Nel-

son Sixes.Wakefield Indoor Bowling Club committee member, David Vanstone says Clive is a “brilliant” player and a valued coach who continues to defy his age. And David should know having been on the end of a few hidings from the club’s elder states-man. “He beat me 13-1 in our men’s singles. At least I felt a bit better when he went on to win the Champion of Champions final.”Clive says the Wakefield Club is always looking for new members. The club plays at the Wakefield Vil-lage Hall every Tuesday from 7pm to 10pm through the winter and holds an after-noon session on Monday’s from 1pm to 4pm for its “ful-ly retired” members. Anyone interested in joining the club can contact Ren Olykan on 541 8275.

Aspiring professional dancer, Hannah Galbraith is on pointe for a bright future after being accepted into one of New Zea-land’s most prestigious dance schools. The 14-year-old Brightwater student, who attends Nelson College for Girls, was invited to join the small group of ap-proximately 50 danc-ers at the New Zea-land School of Dance in Wellington, follow-ing an audition last year. The elite programme identifies talented ballet and contempo-rary dance students aged be-tween 13 and 16 years from New Zealand and Australia.

“My goal was to be accepted into the New Zealand School of Dance and it was really excit-ing receiving the letter to say I was successful,” Hannah says.In January, Hannah will

be moving to Christchurch to study dance full-time at the Anneliese Gil-berd Academy of Dance after being spotted by International Ballet Master, Martin James at a seminar in Napier last year. Martin was

one of the tutors and he ap-proached Hannah’s mother Nicky, about her studying dance full-time. Martin suggested two dance companies he was affil-

iated with, one in Sydney and the other in Christchurch. She

decided to stay in New Zealand to continue her schooling by correspondence and her studies

at the New Zealand School of Dance.

“It is an amazing opportu-nity to be able to train full-time next year, if you don’t start full-time training at around my age, you are not going to make it. The Australian girls start at age 13 and if you want to compete, you do have to do it.

“When you start getting good at something, you

start getting more passionate about it because you see your-

self getting better. “My dream is to be Odette in Swan Lake for the Royal New Zealand Ballet one day,” says Hannah. She appreciates training is a full-

time commitment which opens up many opportunities but is also very hard on the body and mind. Over a two month pe-riod, Hannah will compete in Blenheim, Wellington, Sydney, Christchurch and Auckland. She trains around ten hours a week which includes six hours of dance classes at the Rebecca Bignall Academy of Dance in Hope.Rebecca, a former International Ballet Academy dancer, says “Hannah is an absolute natural dancer”.“I saw potential in her when she first ran into my dance class like a rugby player, aged 4. She quickly developed and has the strong technique, flexibility, vi-vacious personality plus amaz-ing parental support, which are all required to make it,” Rebecca says.

FOOTBALL: The Nelson Marl-borough Falcons will be aiming to stay on top of the ASB Youth League when they play Auckland at Nelson’s Trafalgar Park at 2pm on Sunday. The Falcons won their second game of the league last week when they defeated Canter-bury United 1-0 breaking a two-year losing streak in Christchurch. A Shawn O’Brien own goal hand-ed the Falcons the win.

DUATHLON: Waimea College’s Hayden Squance won the men’s long course race in the third race of the Migym Spring Duathlon se-ries held at Kaiteriteri on Sunday. Hayden edged out another Waimea student, Cameron Jones, winning the 3km run, 14.5km mountainbike and 6km run in 1 hour 25 minutes 50 seconds. Pogo Mcauley won the women’s race in 1hr 38min 45sec. Jackson Carver won the men’s short course race and under-14 athlete Hunta Sutherland won the women’s short course race.

HARRIERS: Waimea Harriers are holding a fun four-person relay for runners and walkers at Rabbit Is-land this Saturday. Walkers to start at 11.15am and runners at midday. There are two legs of 7.5km and two of 8km. Entry for the race is free. Waimea Harriers 5km sum-mer series starts on Wednesday

November 5 with walkers starting at Club Waimea at 6pm and run-ners at 6.10pm. Entry is $2 and all welcome.

CYCLING: Richmond cyclist, George Bennett, has a new team for next season after signing with World Tour team Lotto NL. George has been with the Can-nondale team that is being dis-banded at the end of this season. George made his World Tour de-but for Team Radioshack in 2012 before joining Cannondale at the end of last year.

CRICKET: Nelson’s top cricketers had a good lead-up to this week-end’s annual Chapple Cup tourna-ment in Napier when they played in last Sunday’s annual Town-Country one-day fixture at Lower Ngawhatu. Town won by 140-runs to secure the Gordon Davidson Trophy. Josh Clarkson top-scored for Town with 79 runs while captain Ryan Edwards scored 67. Country bowler Hayden Ingham took 5 for 25.

ORIENTEERING: The Nelson Orienteering Club is holding an event at Karanga in Eighty-eight Valley this Sunday. There will be a range of courses from white to long red with start times from 10.30am to 12.30pm. All welcome.

Tasman Makos and Waimea Old Boys star James Lowe prepares to catch a pass during the Makos’ loss to Counties-Manukau on Sunday. It wasn’t the way the Makos would have wanted to finish the regular season, but they have still done enough to host an ITM Cup semi final in Nelson this weekend. The Makos finished second on the table, with Sunday’s loss their only defeat of the sea-son, and will host Canterbury at Trafalgar Park this Saturday at 7.05pm. Photo: Barry Whitnall/Shuttersport.
