JazzErie is a com-munity of music lovers and musicians and, a member-ship organization dedicated to sharing with children, adults and one another an awareness and love of

music, particularly jazz. JazzErie brings together people who want to listen to jazz, learn about it, play it and just live it.

Check out our website at www.jazzerie.com for complete

information on current and upcoming events.

Marty took to music early in childhood and was a performing electric guitar rocker and singer by age 15. He attended the Hochstein School of Music in Rochester for three years, studying classical guitar, but along the way encountering Chuck Mangione, who taught at Hochstein and expanded Marty’s budding interest in jazz. Soon Marty and schoolmate Fred McCarthy formed a duo, playing acoustic music – primarily folk, country and classical – and it was in this format that Marty first performed in Erie, at Gannon’s Coffee House.

Marty continued his classical music studies at Boston’s New England Conservatory of Music, and while there fell in with a group of Berklee students who gave him a serious introduction to South American rhythms and melodies. In 1978, again with fellow musician Fred McCarthy, Marty landed gigs in Erie at Smugglers Wharf and Sherlocks, and this time stayed on, playing with rock groups and an extended gig at the Bel Aire. Aside from two years in Maine, he has remained here since.

During his career in Erie, Marty has released five CD’s, though none recently, and has worked with most of Erie’s finest musicians. He recently completed a brief reprise of his earlier gig at the Bel Aire, this time with bassist John Dauber, and continues to work private parties, in addition to his teaching jobs.

Lydia Marks, always a fresh and outgoing presenter of American cabaret and jazz music, currently lives in Fredonia, N.Y., but maintains strong ties to Erie’s musical life. In addition to club appearances, including last July’s Jazz Walk at Matthew’s Trattoria with Charles Ventrello, Lydia was Artist in Residence at Erie’s Blasco Library in 2007, and sang at last year’s JazzErie Singer’s Night. She promises this year to include among her numbers the Kurt Weill/Ogden Nash tune “Speak Low,” modeled after Barbara Streisand’s “Back to Broadway” release.

Lydia will be singing later in March at the Ellicott Brewery in Fredonia, N.Y. (see JAZZ LINE) with Harry Jacobson and Howard Hamme, two of

her accompanists at Singers’ Night, and will be performing later in the year at the Lewistown, N.Y. Jazz Festival, with an all-star band of baritone saxophonist Bruce Johnstone, Harry Jacobson and pianist Mike Jones. This will be her second annual appearance at the Lewistown Fest.

Katie Chriest brings an expanding wealth of experience to the Singers’ Night gig, most notably recent excursions into composing and writing with her compatriots in the Heliotropes, one of the few jazz-related groups currently finding regular work on the local scene. Consonant with her varied interests and activities – as a teacher at Mercyhurst and Gannon (English composition), and at Behrend (kayaking), a writer for Showcase magazine, and a fitness nut – Katie’s singing is always alive, creative and swinging. She is establishing a serious presence on the Erie arts scene as a jazz-oriented, but “beyond category” musician.

Prior to her current work with the Heliotropes, Katie has worked extensively in a duo with guitarist Sheldon Peterson (also a member of the Heliotropes, the duo originating that name), and in a number of small ensembles, including Allen Zurcher’s “AZQ” Quartet, Gene Leone’s “Spa Quintet,” and “Touch of Class” with Stan Bialomizy and Howard Hamme. She has also appeared with area big bands.

Katie has been a regular and popular participant in JazzErie’s Jazz Walk, and in last year’s Singers’ Night.

Completing the vocal presentations for the evening will be a trio of singers from the Collegiate Academy Vocal Jazz Ensemble. Heather Sitek, Brittany Barko, and Trenecia Carroll will bring the polish and pizzazz of that group to JazzErie fans at the East Erie Turners.

THE SUPPORTING CAST:“Music has always been my first

love,” says Howard Hamme, Erie’s premier vocal accompanist. He has worked with Amanda Post, Mary Alice Brown (The Billie Holliday Show), and at one time or another with most area instrumentalists and vocalists. Howard is the proprietor of Froess Pianos and Keyboards, 2558 W. 8th St. which has a 120-year history of providing pianos to the community and is currently the only remaining retailer of pianos in Erie. He has been with Froess for 50 of those years. He is also a piano tuner/technician.

Howard has been involved with music since early childhood, learning piano first, then sax and clarinet. A significant part of his musical education came during an Army stint in the ‘60’s, when he got to play with many great musicians attached to the 3rd Army Band. Howard can currently be heard some Thursdays at the Colony Club, where he fills in when needed for Gene Leone, and at other local venues where he often works with Stan Bialomizy and a variety of vocalists.

Stan Bialomizy, “one of Erie’s hidden treasures,” is an occasional sideman in a number of nationally famous bands (including the Benny Goodman band, the Dorsey Brothers Tribute Band, and the American

Repertory band) where he is prized for his versatility, sight reading, creativity and musicianship, as well as being a prominent front-line presence in Erie’s clubs (same reasons.) In addition to

performing, Stan’s career was as a music educator in East Meadows, N.Y and at Long Island University. Stan was an organizational activist, and a member of

the Board of the New York State Music Association, and president of the Nassau Music Educator’s Association. He is a published arranger, composer, music editor and a clinician, and since returning to Erie in his “retirement” has served as a radio jazz show host, a teacher of reeds and piano and a vocal coach, while maintaining a busy performance schedule.

Drummer/percussionist Carl Alanakian is also more than a local star. Born in 1951 in Baku, the capital city of Azerbaijan, then a republic of the Soviet Union, Carl was inspired by his professional saxophonist father, and took up drums at age eight. An avid fan of American jazz, Carl followed his musical muse to Moscow, where he moved with wife Irina in 1983. He supported himself playing in Moscow’s clubs while attending Gnesiny State Musical College. As a member of the house band at the Blue Bird Jazz Club in Moscow, Alanakian played with touring musicians Pat Metheny, Billy Taylor and others and performed in shows with many big name singers. Carl and his wife emigrated to the States in 1991, settling in Erie. He has continued his teaching and performing career here, playing with local greats Brown, Ronzitti, Pacy and Ventrello and visiting stars Buddy DeFranco, Dave McKenna, Buster Williams, Bruce Johnstone, Sonny Fortune and Don Menza. He recently performed with Michael Feldman at the Warner Theater and regularly works in summertime at Chautauqua. He can be heard on Thursdays at the Colony Club.

Bassist Harry Jacobson, also part of the Colony Club House Band, has settled into a busy career as a music educator at SUNY-Fredonia (NY), where he teaches classical and jazz bass and coordinates a Music Business curriculum, an interdisciplinary major covering producing, recording and legal issues. He says his own experience producing a CD for singer Lydia Marks (“Lovelight Shining” – 2005, CD Baby) was valuable preparation for the course. Harry is a member of the Erie Philharmonic bass

section, and a frequent presence on the club scene in Erie, Fredonia, Jamestown

and throughout Northeast PA and Northwest NY.

Jacobson will also present

his own performance skills and musicological explorations in next month’s JazzErie concert on April 17 at 8 PM at the Walker Recital Hall, Mary D’Angelo Center, Mercyhurst. The concert’s theme: a history of the jazz bass, from Oscar Pettiford to Christian McBride, with stops along the way for Charles Mingus, Charlie Hayden, Scott LaFaro, Stanley Clarke and Eddie Gomez. Highlighting the concert will be performances by Jacobson’s band, with a front line of saxophonist Allen Zurcher and trombonist Chris Dempsey, illustrating the musical periods, compositions and styles of these great bassists. Admission will be $15 for non-JazzErie members, $10 for members and $5 for students.

LOSSES“Another generation is passing,”

wrote Gene Lees in his 2003 account of the lives of some great mid-20th century musicians (Friends Along The Way, Yale University Press, 2003). Now yet another generation is leaving us – this time, some of the really old guys who took good care of themselves, but time is finally having its way.

Louie Bellson with Christian McBride & James Brown.

Drummer Louie Bellson died on Feb. 14 at age 84. Bellson played with Duke Ellington (I remember hearing him with the Ellington band in Minneapolis in 1950), Count Basie, Benny Goodman, and a host of other mid-century greats, including his wife, singer Pearl Bailey. The son of Italian immigrants (his family name was originally Balassoni), Bellson was early fascinated by drums and developed his two pedal-operated bass drum technique as a teenager. In 1994 he was named a “Master of Jazz” by the National Endowment of the Arts, who noted his ranking “among the foremost big-bad drummers of the swing and post-swing eras.”

A JAZZ MUSICIAN DIES AND GOES TO HEAVEN. He is told, “Hey, man, welcome! You have been elected to the Jazz All Stars of Heaven – right up here with Bird, Satchmo, Miles, all of the jazz greats. We have a gig tonight. Only one problem – God’s got this girlfriend who’s a singer.”

Bob is well known to most Erie jazz fans, as a radio host, a highly knowledgeable and passionate

advocate for jazz music, a journalist, a guiding voice on JazzErie’s Performance committee, and a former editor and frequent contributor to this newsletter. Bob returned to Erie in 1998 after a 40-year career in journalism, much of it in the Twin Cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul, MN. During this period, Bob established a national reputation through the quality of his work, and his exposure as a writer/reviewer

for Downbeat magazine.

Bob began his newspaper career in Erie with the Erie Morning News, and began his broadcasting

career in that same period, working at a number of stations as opportunities arose. He has hosted jazz shows ever since – in the Twin Cities and Erie. For the past 3+ years, Bob has been a radio host at WQLN, and has now joined WMCE’s all-jazz radio format.
