You canrsquot hike throughnative grasslands unless

someone cuts clears or burns through the grassesYou canrsquot bike along

the at asphalt unlesssomeone lays a layer ofasphalt across the prairiespines and lake country ofMinnesota

We need to take out a smallpiece of nature in order to appreciatethe big pieces we love so much

Our news beat is the manyski bike hike canoe horse andclimbing trails in the state parksforests and recreational areas acrossthis great state of ours Whenever Itake a break from loving these trailsI occasionally stop to thank all thehardy volunteers that make thesegreat trails possible

Each fall I get a chance toexperience what trail blazers gothrough grooming and building thetrails through the forest land behindmy house in the woods I spendmuch of each fall clearing deadfallmowing weeds and pulling stubbornrocks out of the way

Irsquove been extra busy this year

clearing two new beginner trailsdesigned for granddaughters andother children to learn how to ski Itook extra care to make sure the hillsand turns are gradual the viewsand access to a large old rock areinteresting

While making this beginner trailI took a break on that rock to thankthis old stand of red oak and aspenfor letting me push cut and saw myway through this incredible life-giving place

I get help in my trail-blazing

eorts by my younger cousins wholike to use the trails to hunt runmountain bike snowshoe and skiWhen I suggest we clear a skatingrink behind the house they accuseme of wanting to become the WaltDisney of winter

We come well equipped to thewild foliage with electric and handclippers chainsaws a 1952 FarmallC with a six-foot belly mower andan invincible Gehl 4625 skid loaderItrsquos like fghting a small war or atleast a major insurgency I wonderif there is a drone we could use fortrail clearing

I feel a slight twinge of guilt

bouncing through theforest on my noisy FarmallC I feel like an intruderdisrupting all the naturalgrowth just to have funThen I rationalized naturegives up this sliver of itselfso we can appreciate its

beauty and bounty We needtrails to get into the wildOnce in the wild peoplecanrsquot help but become anadvocate for the wild Withmy eco-conscience in placeI go back to tearing up the

countrysideI admire the trail builders I meet

covering the state parks and trailsThe most impressive trail

builders Irsquove met over the yearshave been the new generation ofmountain bike trail builders Thesefolks create works of art actualsculpted trails planned to makethe most of the bikersrsquo G-forces andcommon sense to keep them safe

The most daring trail buildersI know are those daredevils of theMinnesota Conservation Corpthat stand in at boats wieldingscreaming chainsaws to clear snagsfrom rivers

I particularly appreciate thefolks that drag materials and toolsdeep into the far reaches of the NorthCounty Trail to build wonderful

bridges and walkways so we cantread eortlessly across raging littlerivers and vertical hillsides

Trail blazing has never beeneasy In the 1830s an engineer fromthe University of Edinburgh acompany of voyageurs and a priesttried to build a short-cut trail from

the Crow Wing River to the RedRiver Some of them died trying Itwasnrsquot for another ten years beforethe Woods or Crow Wing Trail wascompleted for ox carts

Despite all the pulling tuggingand rutting there is a beauty in thistrail-building struggle Despite thekilling of innocent vegetation and thepermanent marring of the landscapethere is a wonderful feeling ofaccomplishment gazing down a trailyou just groomed

So when yoursquore sailing downa hill without logs or rocks andmaking a precision step turn givea salute to those unsung heroes thatmake these slivers through the wildpossible

he year 2016 will be a year toremember and celebrate two great

milestones in Minnesota history the125th anniversary of Minnesota StateParks and the 50th anniversary of Min-nesota State Trails

e first state park and the beginningof our great tradition was Lake Itasca e word Itasca comes from two Latin words veritas + ca put or ldquotrue headrdquoand refers to the lake being the headwaters of the Mississippi River It isalso the true head or foundation for all

the parks to follow

e DNR shares an interesting story onthe origin of the park

ldquoIn the late 1800s Jacob V Browerhistorian anthropologist and landsurveyor came to the park regionto settle the dispute of the actuallocation of the Mississippi Headwa-ters Brower saw this region beingquickly transformed by logging and

was determined to protect some ofthe pine forests for future genera-tions It was Browerrsquos tireless effortsto save the remaining pine forestsurrounding Lake Itasca that led thestate legislature to establish Itascaas a Minnesota State Park on April

20 1891 by a margin of only one vote rough his conservation workand the continuing efforts of othersthroughout the decades the splendorof Itasca had been maintainedrdquo

One visionary citizen and one wiselegislator made all the difference Weshould all remember this as proof thatindividuals have the potential to make adifference for generations to come

e parkrsquos history is even more amaz-ing with the contribution of one young woman In 1903 Mary Gibbsthe 24-year-old daughter of the parksuperintendent was appointed by thegovernor to succeed her father whounexpectedly died She soon had to

face down loggers who put up a damand were flooding the park It is a greatstory and one to be remembered too

Over the past 125 years there are manyother examples of such vision and cour-age e year 2016 will be a good timeto share these inspiring stories and torenew our commitment to join in thisgreat legacy

e parks had a 75-year head startbut the trails are now spreading outthroughout our beloved state

With our efforts today Minnesotarsquosstate parks and trails will be just as vitalto people 125 years in the future

Many of these state park trailsare within an hourrsquos drive of theTwin Cities Add the nearly 4 millionacres from Minnesotarsquos 58 stateforests ndash each managed by a nearbystate park sta ndash and the programsand amenities oered multiply o

the chartsSeveral of the parks haveparking toilets visitor centersand regular grooming availablethroughout the winter

Many of the parks oermoonlight or candlelight ski eventswhere the trails are lit by candlesThere are also snowshoe or hikingevents Naturalist programs in theparks give a unique look at wildlifein the cold season

While events are free you willneed a vehicle park permit $5daily$25 annual to enter the park

but otherwise these special eventsare free and open to all agesA Minnesota DNR ski pass is

required for all skiers 16 years of ageand older for use of the designatedgroomed trails or the Grant-in-Aidstate trails That fee is $6 for a dailypass $20 for the season and $55 fora three-year pass This pass permitsuse of 20 specially-designated trailswithin the Metro area includingparks golf courses etc and 100trails outside the Metro Area

The DNR oers dierentgrooming levels of trails within theirnetwork There is a warming houseon site and conditions are updatedand posted daily at mnstateparksinfo

All state parks are open allwinter long Some may not provideservices and others may have closedgates but there is non-motorizedaccess to the campgrounds Thereare now 20 state parks with year-round basic cabins They are a stepup from camping according to Pat

Arndt NR Section Manager for theDNR but thatrsquos all they are intendedto be These units rent for $55-$70night Full service cabins are alsoavailable at some parks

A layer of fresh white snowcovered the landscape at LakeBemidji State Park

Naturalist John Fylpaa led agroup of Thursday snowshoers whenthey came across a trail of timber wolftracks leading to Big Bog Lake

The tracks met with other tracksand the snow was roughed up

ldquoI gure they were out huntingand started to wrestle around in thesnow when they met each otherrdquosaid Fylpaa

This is just one of many wondersFylpaa sees in winter that he doesnrsquotsee in the summer

Winter is a good time to getoutdoors to discover things you donrsquotsee the rest of the year

Fylpaa leads his group past aneaglersquos nest when a pair of eaglesreturn in January They go througha mating ritual of ying together By

February they work on the nest Bythe end of March they are sitting oneggs and in April they are caring fortheir young

Small six-inch-wide holes in the

snow show where squirrels havereturned to eat their acorns Fisherscat on a rock or log indicateswhere a territory has been marked

A group of state parknaturalists spent a weekendsnowshoeing at TettegoucheState Park last winter where theyfollowed the Baptism River fromIllgen Falls down the TettegoucheTrail past Nipisiquit Lake wherethey encountered ve-foot snow

ldquoWe were able to walk rightup to the frozen falls We couldhear the trickling of open waterrunning beneath the iciclesrdquosaid Park Naturalist KacieCarlson

The state parks along theNorth Shore can get as muchas 60 inches of snow in a nightSnowshoes can help more as crudesnow shovels than transportation

Carlsonrsquos group ran into one ofthose ve-foot piles of snow alongthe Baptism River

ldquoWe laughed our way throughmost of the deep snow using our

GPSs to get our bearingsrdquosaid Carlson

The supreme silenceimpressed her most of all

ldquoIt was so peacefulndash a type of peaceful youdonrsquot get in the buzzingchirping and biting days

of summerrdquo said CarlsonTheir salvation wasan animal trail that ledto a worn area of snowabout 50 feet in diameterThen they realized thetracks that led under low-hanging branches werewolf tracks

They were bothnervous and excited tofollow a wolf trail Whenthey found the hoof of adeer sticking out of thedeep snow it was all themotivation they needed toget quickly back to camp

Naturalist Jim Cummingsof Mille Lacs Kathio State Park

reports they have two color-coded backcountry trails not available in thesummer

Both the one-and-a-half-mileTamarack Trail and the four-and-a-half-mile Ogechie Trail start and endat the interpretive center

The Ogechie provides a uniqueapproach to the ancient coppermining site that has been used as anarchaeological site with signs to tellits story

You can snowshoe through

swamps bogs and pine forestsand upon the ancient village nowcalled the Kathio National HistoricLandmark District

Mille Lacs Kathio like other stateparks has a beginnerrsquos program withinstructional trips and free snowshoerentals

Snowshoeing in the moonlightis another way of discovering winterwonders

Whether you want a pleasant trekthrough snow-covered pine trees or adeep woods adventure snowshoeswill provide the transportation youneed to see things yoursquoll never see inthe summer

Yet Minnesota has a widevariety of challenging skiexperiences from training for

Classic skiing is moretraditional and it can also be very

fast and fun This style needs skisthat are softer in ex (or camber)allowing the middle of the ski toalways come down to the snowwhen weight is transferred toa single ski The middle of theski then grips the snow via waxor a no-wax patterned grip zoneForward propulsion comes fromthat grip You move forwardstaying in the pre-set tracks skisusually parallel to each other

CANYON SKIING

The opposite extreme canbe found in the Manitou RiverGorge on the North Shore ofLake Superior where machine-groomed trails are not even

possible The snow is soft anddeep and sometimes thereis open water The trick is

to dodge the open waterusually found at the baseof a frozen waterfall Skidown the many cascadesand waterfalls always being

wary of the pool at the bottom

For this type ofbackcountry skiing you needwide-stable not-so-light skisand big rm-stable boots andbindings Cranking a sharpcorner is needed now andthen Extra gear is needed likea backpack with dry socksand hiking boots or mukluks

inside just in case you gointo the drink with your skison You can always walkout after changing footwearSome folks go even moreextreme carrying big packsor hauling toboggans loadedwith camping gear into thenorthern woods

destination is well-knownIt is also a top-notch backcountry destination throughoutMinnesotarsquos long snowy and coldwinter

Snowshoers and cross-countryskiers pulling gear-laden sledstrek far and wide to enjoy wintercamping at its best throughoutthe remote reaches of the BWCArsquosfrozen backcountry lakes and vast

forestsEach winter Bear

says the number oneactivity in the winter backcountry is notcamping - itrsquos troutshing Its manylakes are prime iceshing waters someaccessible either onfoot or by snowmobile routes Mostof the close-in lakes are dotted withice houses or are popular mushing

runs so those seekingmore solitude tendto ski into the moreremote lakes

popular access pointsThere are also timbercompany roads thatmay be plowed but

they are private andnot available foraccess into the BWCAor surrounding area

After Oct 1 mostof the regulations arethe same throughoutthe vast BWCA Thereis no fee to camp butvisitors are asked to set upat least 150 feet from trailsor summer campsites Larger

groups are encouraged to uselatrines at ocial campsites toreduce impact on each camping

Paulsen offers some insights into severalpopular access points within the BWCA

bull Echo Trail - A main access road to entry points to portage trails

that lead to Devilrsquos Cascade along the Little Indian Sioux River

bull Sawbill Lake - a good ldquorst triprdquo lake area lots of activity

bull Round Lake - good access a mecca for trout shing

bull Saganaga - beyond end of Gunint Trail heavy snowmobile use

along entire Gunint corridor less trac back o from trails

bull Lake One - reliably accessible but is seasonally aected by

marginal ice




areaOne way to tell if ice is solidand strong is what Paulsen callsthe ldquotick-tockrdquo test ldquoGood icemakes a lsquotickrsquo sound when struck

bad ice with air pockets or otherweakeners makes a lsquotockrsquo soundrdquoPaulsen says it pays to follow oldtrails as long as you can even ifthey are a month old

Most of the lakes throughoutthe BWCA have a layer of slush

on them throughout thewinter ldquoItrsquos a rare yearwhen you can get no

slush at allrdquo saysPaulsen ldquoOnly

bull Bring an ice scraper to remove slush from all

your equipment so it doesnrsquot freeze onto your

gear

bull Use larger skis and snowshoes they ldquooatrdquo

better than smaller ones

bull Carry rescue ice picks and a throw bag in case

you or someone falls through the ice

bull Carry your survival gear on you not on a sled or

other gear

bull Wear a fanny pack in back not in the front where

it could snag up on the edge of the ice while you are

trying to extract yourself

building fres out on theice and burning woodcompletely so no partial logswill eventually oat to thesurface during the summerHe also recommendsgathering frewood backinto the woods beyond the

shorelinePaulson says Marchis the best month forexperiencing winter inthe BWCA ldquoJanuaryis the hardest monthitrsquos dark slushy andcoldrdquo he says andadds ldquoJanuary 1stis the trout fshingopener so therersquoslots of pressure

and activityrdquo ByFebruary saysPaulsen the snow has agood crust layer

The Boundary WatersCanoe Area is an adventurouswinter wonderland for a growingnumber of campers and trekkerswho have found an exciting way toexpand upon all that this fabulousarea has to oer
