155th International PhotographicExhibition 2017
Edinburgh Photographic Society
Introduction
Welcome to the 155th Edinburgh International Exhibition ofPhotography. We have had a large number of entries fromall round the world from which only 8.8% could be accepteddue to limitations of space, as we only have room to exhibit202. It is our policy to accept only the number we candisplay. These are on display at the EdinburghPhotographic Society daily throughout four weeks ofAugust. We hope you enjoy the Exhibition and thank you forvisiting.
Our international panel of distinguished selectors, RaySpence, Niamh Whitty and Markus Lauboeck spent a busytwo days viewing 2300 prints from 344 authors in 38countries to make their final selection for the exhibition. Wethank them for their efforts upon which the excellence of theExhibition rests.
We have an enthusiastic and dedicated team of Societymembers who give generously of their time to make surethe Exhibition is a success. Unpacking, labelling, correlating entry forms with the details in our database, is amammoth task carried out cheerfully by the team overabout two months. After the judging, mounting, hangingand scanning every accepted print for the catalogue isanother Herculean task. Three years ago we took thedecision to include images of every print in the exhibition, and this was such a success that we have adopted this asour norm. Thanks to those who work behind the scenes tomake sure it looks so good and appears on time. InSeptember there is still more work to be done, dismantlingthe exhibition, reuniting the prints with their packaging andreturning prints to their authors. We are very grateful toeveryone involved for their efforts.
Last, but not least, thanks to all the photographers fromaround the world who support us with their entries.Although we are only able to accept a small proportion,we depend on all who send us images. Without themthere would be no exhibition.
We hope you enjoy the images on display and that youreturn many times in the future to see the very best ofInternational Photography.

Selectors’ Comments
We were honoured to be invited to judge the 155th Edinburgh International Photographic Exhibition. Thishighly regarded international competition has produced stunning print exhibitions year after year and wewere determined to do our bit to help produce another exhibition of high quality imagery this year.
As one would expect with a salon of the calibre and history of Edinburgh, we were treated to a large entryof prints from photographers around the world across a diverse range of subject matter. The diversity andquality of the entries made our job very difficult, especially in the final stages, as we worked to select thefinal 202 images which would be shown at the exhibition this year. This however was a nice problem for usto face as we enjoyed studying the images on the shortlist before making our final exhibition selection.Congratulations to all those whose images were accepted into the Edinburgh Exhibition this year, especially the award winners.
Every year, volunteers from Edinburgh Photographic Society accept the challenge to produce thisexhibition. This isn't a mere weekend of work, it's a year long cycle that requires massive organisation fromchoosing the selectors, opening for entries, processing print submissions, dealing with queries, etc - andthat's all before the selection weekend which requires a massive amount of manpower to run smoothly, notto mention hanging the exhibition, producing the catalogue and emailing results. All by volunteers! Wecommend both the enthusiasm and professional manner in which these tasks are accomplished.
We would also like to say thank you to Edinburgh Photographic Society for their wonderful hospitality to usduring our stay and wish them the best of luck with this, their 155th, exhibition!
Selectors’ Biographies
Markus LauboeckBorn in Vienna in 1972, my passion for photography started in secondaryschool and I spent most of my spare time in the darkroom there. A strongfocus on black and white imaging has accompanied me in my wholephotographic life.
Hand in hand with successes in both local and international competitionsin the nineties there came invitations to lecture and judge which enabled meto travel the world through the wonderful universal language of photography. Ihave been a long-term judge within the Trierenberg Super Circuit, and thishas given me the opportunity to meet numerous great photographers andpersonalities all over the globe.
My photographic focus is widespread, but mainly concentrates on theartistic visualisation of the topic "contrasts" in many contextual meanings.Travel, architecture and fish-eye photography round up my work.
I have never been interested in applying for photographic distinctions of any kind but I have developedstrong ties to many international photographic institutions. For example I have become Honorary President ofthe Chinese Jiangxi Photographic Association.
Now judging the 155th Edinburgh Salon of Photography for the second time is a big honour for me!
Niamh Whitty FIPFNiamh is probably best known for her unique approach to the macroexploration of flowers, creating beautiful dreamscapes in the process. However she is also a full time professional and multi award winningphotographer.
She is a member of Council of the Irish Photographic Federation (IPF) andis an adjudicator of their distinctions. She is a respected judge and lecturerboth in Ireland and overseas. Niamh is very active as a volunteer with the IPFmanaging their online presence and is also editor of their monthly newsletter.
Niamh holds a fellowship with the IPF for her panel of abstract flowerswhich she presented in 2011. She was also awarded an Associateship withthe Royal Photographic Society in 2012.
Ray Spence FRPSI am a photographer, lecturer and author based in Warwick in the Midlands.Originally a biologist, my passion for photography turned into a lifetime career.I have lectured in photography for over 30 years at various colleges, universities and independent institutions. I have written many books andmagazine articles on both analogue and digital photography. I have also beena commercial photographer owning a large commercial studio in Birmingham. I am a Fellow of the Royal Photographic Society and recipient of the FentonMedal. I sit on the Distinctions Advisory Board, Fellowship Board andmoderate the Applied and Fine Art panels. I regularly exhibit in the RPS PrintInternational and have won gold and silver awards. For many years black and white darkroom work was my passion producingfine art monochrome prints. This led to a period of work in ‘alternativeprocesses’ such as platinum, salt and cyanotype printing. For a number ofyears I ran courses at the Inversnaid Photography Centre in these processes. In 1988 I turned to digital work, having spent time at Bournemouth and Poole College. Over the past few years I have returned to traditionalprocesses and now concentrate on wet plate collodion work, making my own glass plates and exhibiting in artgalleries. My work has been exhibited in many galleries in the UK, China and Russia.

RPS Gold MedalsMarkus Lauboeck Church at Vik by Sheila TesterA picture that convinces with its simplicity. Taken at the right time with the right light at the right place the photographermanaged to create an exceptional picture from scenery probably seen countless times. It reveals clean, purephotography.Ray Spence Sacrifice by Dianne Owen A disturbing and surreal image of three figures being crucified. This works on many levels. It asks questions of whythese people are being tortured. Is it a comment on humanity or religion or some personal angst? Any images whichask such questions of the viewer are worthy of reflection. The use of limited monochromatic colour, lighting andcomposition create a very uneasy feeling. A well deserved medal winner.Niamh Whitty Boy in a Hat by Rod WheelansI was drawn to this image by the very strong connection between the subject and the photographer, the challenge inthe eyes and the simplicity of the composition. When the results were announced, it turned out that the author was thegrandfather of the young man in the photograph. I can't help but think of all the photographs we don't take of the peoplewe love and commend the author for taking the time to create this powerful image with his grandson.
FIAP Gold MedalsMarkus Lauboeck City Girl by Rikki O'NeillBridging the gap between photography and graphic artwork the City Girl unites both hemispheres. Carried out withboth technical perfection and fascinating creativity it well deserves the FIAP gold medal.Ray Spence Broken by Terry DonnellyA very powerful portrait. The use of light and dark and the cold colours work particularly well. The direct stare of thewoman is compelling. The symmetry of composition and carefully controlled lighting enhance the power of the image.Niamh Whitty Polar Bear by Michael WindleThis image of a polar bear out for a stroll caught my attention at every stage of judging. The photograph itself isperfectly executed - timing, exposure, focus and composition are spot on and the choice of paper and mounting issympathetic to the subject matter. In addition to this, the image stood out because of the mood it portrays, the isolationof the polar bear quietly leaving heavy footprints in its snowy world. It sparks the imagination and invites the viewer in.
Edinburgh MedalRiver Dance by Alistair WrightThis beautifully presented image was our choice for the Edinburgh Medal this year. Its simple composition andgraceful movement created a dreamlike quality. This, paired with a very contemporary presentation, drew us to it overand over as we went through the images on the shortlist.
