What’s happening in Rotorua

You may recall a recent article in the Rotorua “Daily Post” about ‘Anzac’ who came to the shelter in April 2014 having been found tied tightly on a large chain that was strangling him. The chain was cut off by bolt cutters allowing ‘Anzac’ to then be treated by our loyal supporter, VetPLUs who then put her on a course to full recovery. What was a particularly frightened dog upon arrival became a beautiful loveball who just wanted to be fussed over and played with continually! Finding ‘Anzac’ the right home was at one point proving difficult as she needed a lot of love and attention to reinforce her sense of security and allow her to flourish. Fortunately, it was not long before ‘Anzac’ was whisked off to a farm where she is running free and regularly playing with other dogs and animals gaining all that much needed attention.

Finding their ‘forever’ homeWatching an animal leave with a new family is one of the most rewarding experiences for us here at the Rotorua SPCA.

Already this year we have found wonderful homes with some amazing families for 600 animals.

Allow us to share a handful of these stories with you:

‘Blaze’ came to us early one morning found abandoned having being thrown out of a car with a pellet gun mark on his head where some children had been using him as target practice. As expected, dazed and frightened it took a whole lot of cuddles and a thorough vet check to assure ‘Blaze’ that he will live! When we shared with our Facebook community of this dog’s plight, a lovely girl Amy told her mother on a trip to Cambridge “I am going to adopt that dog”. As luck would have it ‘Blaze’ was completing his quarantine period here at the SPCA and had come up for adoption the morning that Amy arrived! Ensuring all the correct vaccinations, desexing and micro-chip had been administered, he was now ready to go to Amy’s loving home. As you can see from this photo ‘Blaze’ is now rather spoilt by his wonderful new owner.

Blazing a trail....

‘When I was saved by the Rotorua SPCA I had a very sore leg from being hit by a car while crossing the road. No one came forward and collected me as their own. The vets at VetPlus xrayed me to find I needed surgery to remove my femoral head form my sore leg. After the surgery and lots of rest I felt so much better and an very thankful for my second chance at life. I am now patiently waiting for my forever family to take me home.” And your’ll be pleased to know that Ninji found an amazing home and had her surgery paid for by a wonderful donater.

Being a Foster Parent is a wonderful experience that gives you the satisfaction of meeting and helping many wonderful animals waiting for their second chance for love. We have a limited amount of space and people in our centre to care for these animals and we rely on our fantastic fosterers to offer temporary homes to animals. Have you got a room in your home for• A mother cat or dog with their litter of kittens or puppies?• Kittens without a mother who need to be bottle-fed, or those who can feed

themselves but aren't yet old enough to be desexed and adopted?• Sick or injured animals that need time, space and a bit more TLC in order to be

properly rehabilitated?• A teenage dog who needs some training and to know what being part of a family

is all about?• Animals with illnesses or diseases that maybe contagious to other animals and

therefore can't be kept at our Centres?

As a fosterer you would…

Provide love, care and a safe, warm environment. You may need to care for an animal for a few weeks or a few months at a time – until they are either old enough or well enough to come back into the centre to be adopted. The length of stay will vary depending on the animal’s needs and what you are able to provide CALL US 07 349 2955 to talk further. All food and any bedding required is provided by us.

Please give us a call if you’re interested in this program on 07 349 2955

VETPlusCorner VetPlus’s relationship with the Rotorua SPCA is going from strength to strength, we not only share a building but a great partnership in ensuring that the Rotorua Community animals are given the veterinary care they need.

The area we feel our partnership has really excelled is with the jointly set up and exclusively run “De-sexing in the City” Program where we de-sex cats at a significantly discounted rate for those who cannot afford to pay the full price. The shortfall in the price is then shared equally by VETPlus and Rotorua SPCA. This program has been extremely successful with well over 1200 cats being de sexed so far, resulting in a significant reduction of unwanted kittens coming into the shelter.

VETPlus looks forward to continuing this positive partnership with SPCA well into the foreseeable future as it fits well with our company’s values and allows us to continue contributing positively in our local community alongside a trusted partner.

Ways to Give

Giving made easy with theGeyser Community FoundationRotorua SPCA established an endowment fund with the Geyser Community Foundation in 2012. One of the reasons for doing so was that Rotorua SPCA wants over time to become self-sufficient and not have to always rely on funding for operating costs and other expenses from external funding organisations and the community. Our goal is to have enough money invested to provide an income for the long term future of the Rotorua SPCA.

You can help build up our fund. People can make donations of any size, large or small. There are no costs to people making donations or leaving a gift in their will. People can safely make donations and leave endowments in their wills to Rotorua SPCA through Geyser and know that their gift will benefit the Society as they intend, forever. The money stays in Rotorua and these funds will benefit the animals in our local community.

Donations made to Geyser’s Rotorua SPCA Fund are invested and the capital retained in perpetuity. Once the fund builds up, the income earned on the capital is made available to Rotorua SPCA every year. This means that you keep giving forever and the total amount of the gift will, over time, far exceed the original capital donation.

To find out how easy it is to give join us for morning tea on Friday, 26th September 2014. Rotorua SPCA and Geyser Community Foundation are hosting a “Giving Made Easy Workshop”. An open forum to ask questions. Venue to be confirmed. Light refreshments provided. Email Eve Johnson on [email protected] or call 07 349 2955 for more details.

Grants support critical Desexing ProjectGenerous local grants both from the Rotorua Trust and the Rotorua District Council have enabled the Rotorua SPCA to launch a successful desexing project that aims to tackle Rotorua’s unwanted cat and kitten problem, which has now also been extended to dogs as well. We are thankful to both of these entities for recognising this community-wide issue we currently have with abandoned animals as a result of multiple litters. SPCA Animal Manager, Karen Rolfe says “the problem is so large we wouldn’t be able to a make a real impact without the support from the local vets and grants available locally”.Every summer the SPCA Rotorua is inundated with thousands of kittens born on the streets of Rotorua, many are bought in with no mother and suffering horrific effects of flu. Despite the efforts of our team, sadly not all are not able to be saved. We are therefore committed to keeping this project going and extend special thanks to all our private donors who give to this specific cause.

Number of animals in this project to date: Cats - 1338 Dogs - 265

The purpose of this

project is to look at ways to deal with both the

cats and dogs on the streets, but also encourage desexing

as part of responsible pet ownership. It is an exciting time, one that we hope will

bring real change in the Rotorua district.

Did you know that monthly giving is an incredibly efficient way to support the SPCA? The SPCA Haven members are a group of dedicated friends like you who make monthly gifts that provide a consistent, reliable income stream, allowing us to focus more resources on our lifesaving programs, and less on raising the necessary funds. Members like it because it’s easy to budget and it feels great to be making a difference for animals every month of the year.

By becoming an SPCA Haven member, you will help us take action for animals in five key ways:

1. Prevent Cruelty Whenever an animal is found, surrendered or seized you will be taking action. We work closely with the community to prevent cruelty and encourage the humane treatment of all animals. This means rescuing animals in trouble and providing medical care, love and shelter for them at our shelter. It also means prosecuting people who deliberately harm animals and working with offenders to ensure that it does not happen again.

2. RescueYou’ll be standing beside our SPCA Inspectors, rescuing Rotorua’s animals in need. Our Rotorua SPCA Inspector is on the frontline when animals have been involved in an accident, abused or abandoned. Our Inspectors are on call 7 days a week from 7am to 11pm. Last year they attended over 200 emergencies and received in excess of 900.

3. RehabilitateYou’ll be helping us to heal Rotorua’s lost and injured animalsEvery animal that comes to Rotorua SPCA is seen by our dedicated veterinary partner VetPlus. Some animals will need routine health checks and vaccinations, while others receive life-saving surgery, and post-operative intensive care. Last year alone, VetPlus performed over 500 operations, saving lives and easing the pain of animals in need.

4.Shelter and Re-homedYou’ll help provide a warm bed for the animals taking shelter at SPCA Rotorua.Together we can provide a safe haven for animals that have nowhere else to go. We give them a roof over their heads, a warm bed during cold nights and food to fill their empty bellies. Once an animal is ready to find a new home, we will spend days, weeks and sometimes months matching them to the right family and environment where they will be loved and feel same for the rest of their living days.

5. Seek JusticeYou too can help bring animal offenders to justice. The SPCA is the only charity with the legal power to help animals in need and is authorised. SPCA is authorised under the Animal Welfare Act 1999 to protect all animals from abuse, neglect, and abandonment. We act as law enforcers, sometimes risking our own safety to ensure the safety of Rotorua’s vulnerable animals. If there has been a deliberate act of violence or neglect, our SPCA Inspector will seek justice through the courts, acting as the voice for our animals.

Give our animals a safe Haven

Changing attitudes and behaviour: A new approach to educationAs a continued supporter of the Rotorua SPCA, we recognise you understand the value and importance of having a strong educational programme in place. Education is key to promoting changes in attitudes and behaviour, improving animal welfare and ultimately reducing cruelty to animals. We aim this year to be proactive in the community by encouraging students, parents, schools and communities to think and act together in the interests of improving animal welfare. Our new programs will also increase young people’s knowledge on how to care and look after animals and promoting nurturing behaviour towards all animals.

We are kicking off our education programme with our ‘FurAid’ courses which will be launched in Spring around the Rotorua district. We will also soon be fundraising to write a children’s book to use as an educational tool, and why not also keep an eye out for our upcoming launch of our Kids club.

SPCA OpShop50 Fairy Springs RoadThe SPCA Op Shop sells everything from clothing, jewellery, kitchenware, furniture, linen, toys and bric-a-brac.
