Praise to The Almighty GOD as only by HIS grace, Manado was trusted to be the host for carrying out the 15th KONIKA on July 10th-14th, 2011 with the main theme “Current Pediatric Challenges: Implementing Evidence Based Medicine in Clinical Practice”.

KONIKA is an event for scientific meeting that consists of breakfast meeting, plenary session, lunch symposium, meet the expert, oral free paper, poster, organizational conference also an event for IDAI family member to get close to each other.

Dear Colleagues,

Increasing knowledge and professionalism according to evidence based medicine are things to be developed by a pediatrician. That is why we as the Indonesian Pediatric Society will hold the 15th National Pediatric Congress on 10th-14th July 2011 in Manado with “Current Pediatric Challenges: Implementing EBM in Clinical Practice” as the main theme.

It is an honor for us, The Indonesian Pediatric Society North Sulawesi Branch, as to be the host of this scientific meeting. We would like to thanks the Central Executive Board Indonesian Pediatric Society for giving us this opportunity, the Organizing Committee for their excellent arrangement and all party involved with the preparation. We hope that the Indonesian Pediatric Society members will know each other more, transfer the updated knowledge and get the right medical information.

Beautiful tourism places, various culture, food and the warmth of North Sulawesi people has made Manado well known not only in its National but also International Event. For this, we would like to invite all the colleagues to come and enjoy your stay in Manado.

Greetings from The Indonesian Pediatric SocietyIn an unnoticeable time, we are soon going to meet again in the 15th Child Health National Congress (KONIKA XV) that will be held in Manado, North Sulawesi in 2011. KONIKA is both an organization forum to Indonesia Pediatric Society committee and a scientific forum to all Indonesia Pediatric Society members. The theme of this current congress is ‘Current Pediatric Challenges : Implementing Evidence Based Medicine in Clinical Practice’.Child health knowledge development is one of the responsibility of The Indonesia Pediatric Society to help the government in increasing the health and wellbeing of Indonesian children. Indonesia Pediatric Society members should always update their knowledge and skill with the latest evidence based knowledge before implementing it to their daily practice, thus the patients will obtain optimal child health care. Realization to the daily health care should include all aspects of child health care such as promotive, preventive, curative, and rehabilitative. The effort must be complement each other as well as has its own priority. Child health is not only free from diseases, and not only a state of physical, social, mental and spiritual well being but also promotion for attaining the highest potential in life. All of us are encouraged to play an active role in achieving Millenium Development Goal (MDG) 2015. Decrement of infant and child mortality rate as well as reducing infectious diseases rate should be a focus of all stakeholders in child health care. Scientific material which will be presented in KONIKA XV Manado is expected to increase the knowledge and skill competence of the participants, therefore Indonesia Pediatric Society vision to built a pediatrician community that is professional, highly qualified with a global standard and medical professional ethics, as well as dedicated to increase the health and wellbeing degree of Indonesian children.I encourage every Indonesia Pediatric Society member and anybody who provide child health care to come and participate in KONIKA XV Manado 2011 thus our attempt toward having healthy Indonesian children for a better future will be closer.

15th KONIKA is a scientific meeting that is dedicated for pediatricians, residents, and other related professional in order to improve their quality and professionalism besides gathering all Indonesian pediatricians. Background Neonatal sepsis is a major cause of morbidity and mortality among newborns. A low platelet count is a strong and independent predictor of an adverse outcome in critically ill patients. Increase in MPV could express the development of a more invasive infection.

TOMOHONThe fertile soils of the Minahasa highlands have made them some of the most productive form of agriculture, and it seems everywhere you look up there are neat rows of cabbages, carrots, spring onions and other vegetables that eventually find their way to the Tomohon market, and later onto dining tables around the region. Its takes around 45 minutes to reach this place from Manado.

IMAM BONDJOL MAUSOLEUMThis mausoleum, located 7 km from Manado, represents traditional Minangkabau architecture and honors Imam Bondjol, a national hero from Minangkabau in West Sumatera. He was a hero of the Perang Paderi (Paderi War) against the Dutch and was later exiled to North Sulawesi. He was born in 1791 and died in Lota Village, Pineleng in 1864.

BUNAKENEcotourism is the biggest attraction in Manado. Scuba diving and snorkeling on the nearby Bunaken National Park including the island of Bunaken are popular attractions. With splended under water views and much of the best coral just under the surface, the sea gardens are easily accessible to snorketers. Non-divers can still enjoy the beauty of these under sea garden, by snorkeling or just viewing the under water marine life from glass-bottom boats. Near Manado andBunaken you can see around 3000 types of fish, and around 300 types of coral. It is very difficult to find anywhere else that has this amount of variety. Bunaken can be reached by motorized outrigger boat in about 30 minutes from Manado.

BENTENAN WEAVING FACTORYLocated at Sounders village, around 20 minutes from Tomohon. In this place, we could see the processing of Bentenan weaving. Bentenan weaving is Minahasa tribe around the 7th century by using materials from the bark fibers called

fuya, taken from Sawukouw‘s trees and Lahendong’s tree, as well as pineapple and banana,called koffo and bamboo fibers

NIMANGA RIVERNimanga River is one of the most favorite tourism destinations in the North Sulawesi. It has been popular as it is used for any kind of extreme sports and other activities. It will be great experience for having an extreme sport such as rafting along the river. It takes approximately 5 to 6 hours to do rafting along the river.

LAKE TONDANO, LAKE LINOW & KALI WATERFALLTondano lake is the largest and most well known, with its colorful restaurants built on stilts over the water for a fresh seafood lunch. Then there’s the remarkable Lake Linow fed by a steaming volcanic spring, on a hot day it is famed for its color changes from deep blue to turquoise,

green and sulfur yellow. Also nearby is Kali waterfall. Just a short drive from Tomohon, from the car park it’s a moderately energetic walk along a narrow path which winds through some luxuriant rainforest. The waterfall itself has a charming fairy tale quality to it with an arched bridge having been put in place and the rock walls around are covered with beard moss blowing in the breeze and spray from the powerful falls. It is best to take a raincoat and something to cover your camera.

TANGKOKO NATIONAL PARK.Located at the foot of Dua Saudara Mountain, the area is comprised of rolling hills and valleys with a variety of hardwood trees and unusual plant life. The animal life is also quite varied, and one can often view Tarsiers Spectrum (world’s smallest primate), black tailless monkeys, Maleo Birds, wild pigs and kuskus (marsupial family). Tangkoko Batuangus Reserve offers a suitable protective environment to help prevent these animals from becoming extinct. Tangkoko is

located in the northern sector of Bitung, and comprises an area of

BUKIT KASIHBukit Kasih – or the Hill of Love is located in the village of Kanonang at Kawangkoan, some 55 kilometers from Manado, North Sulawesi. It was built in 2002 as a spiritual center where religious followers from various faiths can gather, meditate and worship side by side in this lush and misty tropical hill. This hill is called the Hill of Love because it is where people from different religions can gather and worship side by side as a symbol of religious and peaceful harmony. Five houses of worship are here, a Catholic Church, a Christian church, a temple, a mosque and Hindu temple built on the second peak. On the first peak is a 53 meter tall white cross which can be seen even from the Boulevard beach in Manado. In addition, this place is believed to be the original place where lived original ancestors of the Minahasa tribe, Toar and Lumimuut. Their faces are carved on the hillside beneath the second peak.

Lembeh Strait is a 12 km long stretch of water separating Lembeh Island and the mainland. Bitung is actually the half way point along the shores of Lembeh Strait. This pristine section of water in North Sulawesi is home to many unique sea animals which include the pygmy seahorse, mimic octopus, ghost pipefish, as

well as other larger species. It is a fantastic dive area for underwater photographers and the diversity of smaller creatures ensures many memorable photo opportunities. There are several undeveloped beaches on the shoreline of Lembeh Strait which are excellent for swimming and snorkeling.

BITUNGThe port town of Bitung with its fine natural harbour protected by the adjacent island of Lembeh is the centre for shipbuilding and maintenance as well as commercial fishing. Also,since the harbour in Manado silted up, large ships now all call into Bitung, including some of the magnificent passenger cruise-liners. The town itself has a quaint provincial charm and is distinguished by its 12m replica of the Eiffel Tower at one of the roundabout intersections leading into town. Apparently the unusual monument was built by a previous mayor who had studied in Paris in his earlier years, and was built as a testament of his love for the “City of Lights”.

Please note that the road to Tangkoko is somewhat difficult and visitors are recommended to visit with a local touroperators to ensure a safe journey and to take advantage of an experienced guide who can assist in spotting the wildlife.

MANADO LOCAL FOODManadonese food is famous throughout Indonesia for two things: the Minahasa eat absolutely anything, and the flavor of choice is very, very spicy. Sugar is used little if at all, with flavor added through lemon and herbs. Classic dishes include: - Ikan mas bakar rica, grilled spicy fish cooked in traditional style, using

a piece of coconut shell as a way of cooking. Grilled together with chili, that poured in the fish while cooking.
