15th SET PLAN CONFERENCEThursday and Friday, 25 and 26 November 2021

The 15th Strategic Energy Technology Plan (SET Plan) conference will take place in Bled, Slovenia on 25-26 November 2021. This year’s hybrid event, combining a “virtual event” and an “in person event” will bring together high-level speakers, policymakers, industry, researchers, academia and the general public, focusing on important energy-related topics in the new post-COVID policy realities. The conference is co-organised by the Republic of Slovenia’s Ministry of Infrastructure as entity responsible of all activities on energy policies during the time of Slovenian Presidency of the Council of the European Council of the European Union and the European Commission.

The aim of this year’s SET Plan Conference is to contribute to current debates on climate and energy policies, as well as the Member States’ recovery and resilience investments and reforms for addressing the economic and social impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, whilst ensuring that their economies undertake the green and digital transitions, becoming more sustainable and resilient. The Conference will also give inputs for better policymaking in the different SET Plan areas.

The Conference will be organised around four different holistic content sets and not by technologies:

a) energy to enable the transition,b) energy for sustainable and inclusive society,c) energy for smart industrial growth andd) the future of the SET Plan.

Under these pillars the Conference will address important topics such as energy efficiency, smart buildings and cities, the renovation wave, smart grids, new technologies for the energy transition in the field of renewable energy, nuclear and other low-carbon sources (most particularly hydrogen).

The Conference programme will combine panel discussions and participatory sessions, as well as matchmaking, side, and networking events. A professional moderation team will lead the event and execute the interaction with speakers and the audience. Online social network tools will be used for the audience engagement. Panel discussions will be in order to engage all the participants (on-site and online), those in the hall and at home, to have equal opportunity to participate. The event is free of charge.

SLOVENIA:Republic of Slovenia is a country in Central Europe. It is bordered by Italy to the west, Austria to the north, Hungary to the northeast, Croatia to the southeast, and the Adriatic Sea to the southwest. It is mostly mountainous and forested, covers 20,271 square kilometers, and has a population of 2.1 million, of which 500,000 live in the capital and largest city Ljubljana.. The nation’s capital and largest city – Ljubljana is situated at roughly the centre of the country. Slovene, a South Slavic language, is the official language. Slovenia has a predominantly continental climate, with the exception of the Slovene Littoral and the Julian Alps. Slovenia is a developed country, with an advanced high-income economy; ranking very high in the Human Development Index. Measured by Gini, it has one of the lowest rates of income inequality in the world. It is a member of various international organisations, including the United Nations, the European Union, the Eurozone, the Schengen Area, the OSCE, the Council of Europe, and NATO.Slovenia has historically been the crossroads of Slavic, Germanic, and Romance languages and cultures.

LJUBLJANA:Ljubljana is the capital and largest city of Slovenia. It is the cultural, educational, economic, political and administrative centre of the country. The city, with an area of 163.8 square kilometers, is situated in the Ljubljana Basin in Central Slovenia, between the Alps and the Karst. The symbol of the city is the Ljubljana Dragon and symbolises power, courage, and greatness. It is historically believable that the dragon was adopted from Saint George, the patron of the Ljubljana Castle chapel built in the 15th century. The city’s architecture is a mix of architectural styles. Although the oldest architecture has been preserved from the Roman period, Ljubljana’s downtown got its outline in the Middle Ages. After the 1511 earthquake, it was rebuilt in the Baroque style following Italian models. After the earthquake in 1895, it was once again rebuilt, this time in the Vienna Secession style, which today is juxtaposed against the earlier Baroque style buildings that remain.

The central square in Ljubljana is Prešeren Square where the Franciscan Church of the Annunciation is located. Built between 1646 and 1660, it replaced an older Gothic church on the same site. Ljubljana Castle is a medieval castle with Romanesque, Gothic, and Renaissance architectural elements, located on the summit of Castle Hill, which dominates the city centre. Town Hall, located at Town Square, is the seat of the City Municipality of Ljubljana. The original building was built in a Gothic style in 1484. Between 1717 and 1719, the building underwent a Baroque renovation with a Venetian inspiration. St. Nicholas’s Cathedral it is located at Cyril and Methodius Square by the nearby Ljubljana Central Market and Town Hall. Between 1701 and 1706, the Jesuit architect designed the Baroque church with two side chapels shaped in the form of a Latin cross. Nebotičnik is a thirteen-story building that rises to a height of 70.35 m. It combines elements of the Neoclassical and the Art-Deco architecture. The construction was for some time the tallest residential building in Europe.

BLED:Bled is a town on Lake Bled in the Upper Carniolan region of northwestern Slovenia. It is the administrative seat of the Municipality of Bled and the most notable as a popular tourist destination in the Upper Carniola region and in Slovenia as whole, attracting visitors from abroad too. Bled is known for the glacial Lake Bled, which makes it a major tourist attraction. Perched on a rock overlooking the lake is the iconic Bled Castle. The town is also known in Slovenia for its vanilla and cream pastry.

The green story of one of the most beautiful cities in the world

Tourism is one of the fastest growing industries in the world, and sustainable tourism is undoubtedly the future of us all. Bled, which is considered one of the most beautiful cities in the world, received the award, the Green Scheme of Slovenian Tourism, for its efforts for the sustainable development of tourism in 2018. As part of the international non-governmental project Green Destinations for 2019,

it was selected as the second best place in sustainable development in Europe, and since 2008 it has been a member of the Alpine Pearls group, which aims to promote sustainable mobility. In addition to the construction of the northern ring road, which relieved the centre of Bled of traffic towards Pokljuka, the project of automatic bicycle rental has come to life, many well-maintained cycle paths are being renovated, and tourists can use the Hop On Hop Off bus in Bled. Bled is also part of the “zero waste” project, inviting residents and visitors to drink tap water (drinking fountains are installed around the lake, where drinking water is free and can be poured into their own packaging) and waste separation. In the spring of 2021, Hotel Park received the international sustainability label and the Green Key certificate. The green key is the leading standard of excellence in environmental responsibility and sustainable operation. It represents our commitment to adhere to the strict criteria set by the International Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE). The Green Key environmental label assures all guests that by choosing a certified facility, they directly contribute to the protection of the environment.

THE VENUE:The Bled Congress Centre has a long tradition and it has hosted scientific and professional congresses and conventions, corporate and economic meetings, political meetings and sporting events. The biggest event in the rich history of this popular hall was the tournament of chess grandmasters in 1961, which was the main reason behind the construction of the building. Since then, the Congress Centre has hosted a range of congresses, concerts, exhibitions and other events.
