On June 25th the Chamber was pleased to have Sue Clement as our keynote luncheon speaker at the Rotary Field House. Her topic of “Marketing on a Shoestring Budget” focused on networking and low cost strategies for members to get more clients. On June 15th, we were also pleased to have co-sponsored with the City of White Rock and the WR BIA a breakfast session with Teresa Pippus on “Customer Service”. Many of our members have asked for more seminars on networking and customer service to help their everyday business operations…and you will be hearing more on these and other topics in planned business forum events this Fall.

At our June 25th luncheon it was a pleasure to present Antony Intas, Community Relations Coordinator of Sources Community Resource Centres with a cheque for $2500 as part of the proceeds raised at our annual golf classic at Morgan Creek on May 20. Sources plays a major role in our community to promote a better quality of life for all and to encourage all of us to lend support to our neighbors in need.

President Jay Fettinger and I recently attended the BC Chamber of Commerce AGM in Vancouver where over 100 chambers throughout the province attended. At this meeting over 50 policy resolutions were passed on provincial and national issues such as finance, education, environment, health services, forestry, labour etc…with the majority of the resolutions being passed having an impact on our community. Policy resolutions that have been adopted will be presented to the Provincial and Federal Governments.

One outcome from the BC Chamber AGM is that the Chamber has been asked to present two resolutions at the upcoming Canadian Chamber of Commerce AGM in September. The first resolution deals with the “Acknowledgement of the Base Principles of Pension Reform”…and the second on “The Elimination of the Capital Gains Tax”.

Upcoming Chamber events include Minister of Health Services Kevin Falcon as our keynote speaker at a luncheon to be held at Hazelmere Golf and Tennis Club on Friday, July 9th. We expect this to be a well attended event so suggest you book early. Also mark your calendars for August 25th for our annual BBQ. Once again, we will be having our BBQ at Camp Alexander where over 300 people attended last year. This is always a fun filled event for members, families and guests with great outdoor entertainment, food and refreshments.

presiDent’s Messageby Jay Fettinger

JaySuccess is the sum

of small efforts, repeated day in and day out.

Robert Collier

My fellOw chaMber MeMbers. The South Surrey region is one of

the fastest growing regions in Canada. Recognizing this fact we as a chamber are working hard to strengthen relationships with our business partners, including The City of Surrey, The City of White Rock, The BC Chamber of Commerce and other chambers within the network. By working together we have the strength of collective energy and knowledge.

This past month Doug Hart and I attended the 58th Annual General Meeting & Conference for The BC Chamber of Commerce. This three day conference brought together chambers of commerce from all regions of British Columbia to discuss and share business success and identify opportunities throughout our province. As new members of the BC Chamber of Commerce both Doug and I were very impressed with the contacts and strength of the chamber network throughout British Columbia.

As a result of our participating in the AGM, we have agreed to sponsor two policy resolutions in Ottawa during the Canadian Chamber of Commerce AGM that were brought forward:

Elimination of Canada’s Capital Gains Tax

Acknowledgement of the Base Principles of Pension Reform

Both policies were drafted by The Kamloops and Prince George Chambers of Commerce and represent National importance.

Capital Gains:Canada’s Capital Gains Tax

represent less than one percent of the country’s total tax revenue and has been described by leading economists as being of marginal worth. However, to the businesses that pay the tax, the levy represents a huge burden that has stultifying affect on their capacity to innovate and expand.

Pension Reform:While some Canadians are prepared

and will be sufficiently funded for retirement either through private or public service pension plans or through their own prudent planning, it is generally acknowledged that many are not. Within the next decade Canada will see millions of baby boomers enter retirement, many without sufficient savings to sustain a reasonable standard of living.

These two policies are amount many that will be debated nationally in Ottawa with hopes of being adopted and pushed forward to Parliament.

If you want to get involved with the

Chamber or simply learn more about the exciting things that we are doing for our members our community and businesses, I invite you to call me at anytime to discuss. I can be reached at (604) 535-4331.

Have a terrific summer.
