THIS MONTH WITH MY SLIPPERS August 2017

By July most of the standard Paphiopedilums will have flowered. It is time to start thinking about next month’s repotting. I look forward to this time of year nearly as much as I look forward to flowering. It is a time to realize that there has been significant growth in last year’s deflasked plants. It is a time when you can see the root growth on a seedling that you repotted with a couple of stakes supporting the plant because it had no roots. The results are usually a pleasant surprise. It is a time to see plants that were near flowering size being forced into larger flowering size pots with a promise of flowers for next winter.

Growing Tips for the Month

I repot my entire collection in September each year and there is nothing worse than to be in the middle of a run and then running out of potting mix ingredients or appropriate size pots. Now is the time to make sure your supplies are complete so that there are no interruptions. My mix is made up of two thirds Orchiata bark with the remaining third being equal parts of perlite and Bob Bishop’s superb charcoal. For community pots, seedling tubes and up to 40mm forestry tubes I use Orchiata Classic 6-9mm and 5mm charcoal. Above those size pots I use Orchiata Power 9-12mm and 10 mm charcoal. Everybody has their own special mix. Some use Kiwi bark and some use coconut chips. What mix you use is entirely up to you. The important thing to remember is to get the watering frequency correctly matched to whatever mix you use. When I knock out a plant I remove any dead roots and then repot into the smallest size pot that will comfortably hold the root ball. Most of the time this means the plant goes back into the same pot. If you are repotting regularly there is no benefit to planting into a larger pot than is necessary. All you do is waste potting mix and bench space. While potting each plant I add a good pinch of sel grit when the pot is half full of mix and then another around the top at completion. This hopefully balances any drop in pH as the bark breaks down over time. When I have finished repotting I like to give the entire collection a feed of sea weed based product as a tonic to get the plants growing. Rod Species of the Evening Paph. venustum‘T. O. PARENTS: Paph Memoria Barbara Francis By Gary Hart It is an interesting exercise to look at the breeding makeup of some of our paphiopedilums to get a better understanding of how they developed as they did. In 1998 Castle Creek Orchids in Victoria registered the Paphiopedilum Memoria Barbara Francis which was a cross originally made by Jim McCubbin in Queensland. The cross has parents of Jim Mackinney “Spectacular” x Copperware “Linda”. Jim Mackinney is bred from Margaret Brands x Hellas. Copperware is bred from Sharon x Hellas. The double dose of Hellas, which is a brown flower, produced the same in its offspring with both Jim Mackinney and Copperware being in those brown/autumn tones. So with this as a background Paph Memoria Barbara Francis was almost always going to be a brown flower. It also appears that by concentrating the gene pool in this way the flowers produced from the cross are remarkably uniform. That is, many of the seedlings flowered are of uniform good quality. To this end Castle Creek Orchids received, in 1998, and AQ/OSCOV for 12 plants of Paph Memoria Barbara Francis, quite an achievement. They also received Victorian Paphiopedilum of the year in 2000 (“Castle Creek”) and 2002 (“John”). Jim McCubbin up in Queensland was not to be left out of the party, he received quality awards and champion orchid of show with his Paph Memoria Barbara Francis.

Paph. Copperware ‘Linda’ Paph. Jim MacKinney ‘Spectacular’

It is fascinating to contemplate that this cross started out with a species cross of Paph. insigne and Paph spicerianum so many generations ago. Paph villosum and Paph boxalli are also to be found in its origins. From a breeding point of view it is an almost certain quality brown standard paphiopedilum cross. With the colour and huge size of Paph Copperware crossed with the intense brown well shaped, but smaller flower of Paph Jim Mackinney a quality brown tone flower was “almost” a certainty....if in Paph breeding there is such a thing ! With both of these parents having Paphiopedilum Hellas as a parent the brown genes were intensified. Paph Copperware’s other parent , Ratcliffe’s Paphiopedilum Sharon, again intensifies the red/brown gene. Personally I fine Paphiopedilum Memoria Barbara Francis to be a stunning standard Paphiopedilum worthy of any collection. It only takes a little research to realise how it came about and why it is the quality flower we see today. When you are making paphiopedilum crosses it is always important to consider the parentage of the plants you are crossing. As you can see from Paph. Mem. Barbara Francis careful consideration was given to the outcomes of colour, size, shape and even inflorescence length. Haphazard breeding of any flowers in bloom might result in a good one but the chances are greatly reduced. In breeding look for the characteristics you want in the offspring. Colour, size, shape, inflorescence length, vigor.....are all considerations. Try to intensify the gene pool by having the characteristics you are after on at least one but preferably on both sides of the parentage. If this is not possible complimentary breed your plants with at least what you are after on one side of the parentage. Never cross two plants that have the same undesirable trait, it will just be intensified. Paphiopedilum Memoria Barbara Francis is just one of the many successful standard paphiopedilums bred by Jim McCubbin which will stand the test of time. A top flower from a master hybridiser.
