Introduction

The goal for this book is to provide all the words that have been used in the first three units of the ReadingTeacher Reading Program, supplemented with high frequency words.

This book provides teachers with all the words that teachers will need for PreSchool to Third Grade. The two most used lists of high frequency words are the Dolch list and the Fry list.

We have included all the words for the Dolch list in the book, and marked the word cards with a star, if the word appeared on the Dolch list.

We did not reference the Fry list, as Fry compiled his list from books used in Grades 3-9. However, the top 100 words based on frequency rankings are very similar on both lists.

Dolch broke up his list by grade levels. We have deliberately not shown these levels, as they do not make sense for a phonics program! For example, the Dolch list shows the two syllable word “yellow” in the Pre-Primer section, whereas the simple decodable word “if” first appears in the third grade section.

Our use of the Dolch list is solely to add high frequency words to the words introduced in the ReadingTeacher program. Edward Dolch believed that the words on his list should be memorized as whole units, or “sight words.” I’d like to stress that words should not be memorized. We believe that high frequency words should be taught as part of our phonics program, either as fully decodable words, or partly decodable words.

While we do not wish to publish the Dolch list by grade level, we think that it is useful to show the list by the frequency of the words. We have included at the end of the introduction a list of the Dolch 220 words based on frequency (this does not include the Dolch nouns list).

We have also included at the end of this introduction, an alphabetical list of all the more than 600 words in the book.

There is more than one card for each word, for example, the word “dog“ will have a card in the phoneme /d/ section, in the phoneme short /o/ section and in the /g/ section. The story in which the word first appearsis on the bottom right corner of the card.The Dolch words have a star in the bottom left corner. The phoneme is indicated on the bottom center of the card.
