Editors: T.C. Pant, Vinay Desai & Keyzad Anklesaria Pre-Bulletin: Tuesday, 4th June 2013
WELCOME TO AHMEDABAD
Welcome to Ahmedabad, India for the 17th BFAME (Bridge Federation of Asia & Middle East)
Championships to be held at Hotel Hyatt from Tuesday 4th June, 2013 till Tuesday 11th June, 2013.
The tournament under the auspices of Bridge Federation of India, is being organised by Gujarat
Bridge Federation under the chairmanship of Mr. Sunit Chokshi, one of the top Indian Bridge player.
The organisers warmly welcome all participants & officials who are participating in this prestigious
Zonal Championship.
BFAME is the Zone-4 of World Bridge Federation (WBF) with a membership of 13 countries. Seven
teams in the Open event, four teams in the Women event and four teams in the Seniors event (born in
1953 or before) would be vying for the coveted Zakaria Adamjee Memorial Trophy, Vinodini Goenka
Trophy and Nawzad Shaker Trophy respectively. The Open teams will be playing a double round-
robin whereas the Women & Seniors will play quadruple round-robin qualification rounds. There will be
three matches a day for the OPEN teams & 2 matches a day for Women & Senior teams of 16 boards
each. Semi finals of 64 boards (16 x 4) would be played to determine the finalists in the Open event,
while the top two teams in Women & Senior event would go straight to the finals. The finals of each
event will be of 32 boards.
The Finalists in each category, i.e. two teams each from the Open for the 41st Bermuda Bowl and two
teams from the Women for the 19th Venice Cup and two teams from the Seniors for the 7th Seniors
Bowl would be representing this Zone and their respective countries in Nusa Dua, Bali, Indonesia from
16th September to 29th September 2013, later this year.
Manama, Bahrain, the earlier venue for the 17th BFAME had to be changed at the last minute, thus
enabling Bridge Federation of India (BFI), to have the unique distinction of hosting the BFAME
Championships for a record four (4) times and second time running. Jordan was the first country to
host BFAME Championships thrice and also is the only country to have hosted the maximum numbers
of 21 (13 Open and 8 Women) teams in 1995 when present day Zone-8 was part of our Zone.
The Championships will be conducted by efficient and competent BFAME technical personnel to
ensure highest standards of international Bridge competitions. The Chief Tournament Director shall be
Mr. Antonius Kooijman, former Chairman of WBF Operations and now Chairman of WBF Laws
Committee. Wireless scoring through Bridge Mates would be in use in the Championship for the fourth
time in BFAME. Live scores would be uploaded on the Internet throughout the championship. There
will be Vu-Graph presentation for local viewers and on BBO for international viewers of all the three
matches of the day. Players will have to fill the blind line-up before each match in all the 3 events.
Mr. Geet Sethi, multiple times World Billiard Champion and World Snooker Master, will grace the
inauguration ceremony as Chief Guest on 4th June 2013.
The victory banquet will be held on 11th June’13 evening. The WBF President, Mr. Gianariggo Rona has
very kindly accepted to grace the occasion.
We are confident that all bridge players will carry happy memories from this event.

Message from the President of the World Bridge Federation
It gives me great pleasure to offer both my personal greetings and
those of the WBF to all the participants in the 17th BFAME
Championships, being hosted and organized by the Bridge
Federation of India in the enchanting city of Ahmadabad from 4 – 11
June 2013.
I have been advised by my dear friend and WBF Vice President
Mazhar Jafri who, on behalf of BFAME, warmly invited me to attend
these championships which, incidentally, is the 2nd time I have
attended this exceptional biennial event as WBF President, that the
BFI, which is the largest NBO in Zone 4, has the honour and distinction
of hosting these Championships for a record fourth time.
I am extremely pleased to note that the Bridge Federation of India has revived itself fully in the
mainstream of Zone 4. I am sure that, with the support and guidance of the illustrious President of
BFAME, Uma Shankar Bhartia, and under the dedicated and capable leadership of its President,
my dear friend NRK Moorthy, BFI will lead the resurgence of bridge in India, in particular, and in
South Asia in general.
Together with Mazhar Jafri, who unfortunately is unable to be with us in Ahmadabad due to health
reasons, I look forward to congratulating and welcoming the teams qualifying from these
Championships to represent BFAME in the forthcoming Bermuda Bowl, Venice Cup and d’Orsi
Senior Trophy in Bali, Indonesia during September this year.
Competing against each other in a spirit of sportsmanship and with a high standard of ethics will
be your contribution to the success of the 17th BFAME Championships, showing once again the
true value of bridge, friendship, fair play and rejection of any discrimination.
I wish you a new exciting, enjoyable and successful bridge adventure.
Un abbraccio
Gianarrigo Rona President, World Bridge Federation
Message from the President, BFAME
It gives me great pleasure to host the 17th BFAME at Ahmedabad within a
short period of time. We were ready just in case, if there is any chance to
handle the same along with Bhartia Championship, which is normally held in
the month of February. Since Bahrain offered to conduct, we appreciate
their efforts to conduct the Championship.
I welcome all the participants to Ahmedabad.
Almost all the latest techniques (Dealing Machines, Bridge Mates, BBO,
Online Scoring etc.) of World Bridge Federation is being used.
I welcome my friends, WBF President, Mr.Gianarrigo Rona, BFAME Secretary, Mr.Azwerul Haque
and Mr. Mazhar Jafri, Senior most Vice President, WBF. Enjoy your stay at Ahmedabad & we are
always available at your service.

Message from WBF Vice President &
BFAME President Emeritus
In my dual capacity as longest serving Vice President / Executive Council
member of World Bridge Federation (WBF) and President Emeritus of Bridge
Federation of Asia and Middle East (BFAME) , it gives me great pleasure to
extend my warmest greetings all who are attending these 17th Zone 4 /
BFAME Bridge Championships.
Having been closely associated with Zone 4 and BFAME in the last 34 years
and right from its inception with approval by WBF in 1979 as the founder
Secretary / Chief Executive until 1995, then as the President from 1995 to
2003 and now as President Emeritus, I have seen BFAME grow from strength
to strength. I feel disappointed in not being able to attend these
Championships due to health reasons.
These will be the 17th biennial Championships of the BFAME. Over and above the fact that two
teams each from the Open, Ladies and Senior team events will attain eligibility to represent Zone
4 / BFAME respectively in the 2013 Bermuda Bowl, Venice Cup and Senior’s Bowl World
Championships in Bali, Indonesia in September this year, these Championships will also mark a
record achievement and indeed, an honour for Bridge Federation of India (BFI), hosting these
prestigious Zonal Championships for the fourth time in India.
Though in unfortunate circumstances which illustrates BFI President NRK Moorthy and live-wire
hardworking Vice President and Secretary BFAME M. Azwerul Haque with documented
correspondence will bear me out, we will be missing participation of the teams from Jordan –
perhaps the most active NBO in the Middle East / West Asia. There will be participation of
reasonably high number of 16 teams from 9 BFAME member NBOs who I am sure will enjoy
participating in this WBF Qualifying Championships organized and conducted in accordance with
WBF guidelines and high standards.
Finally, I congratulate BFAME President Uma Shankar Bhartia from India and my dear friend BFI
President NRK Moorthy for earning the unique distinction of sponsoring and organizing these
Championships at extremely short notice. The successful hosting of these Championships, of
which I am confident, will, indeed, be a glowing tribute to the administrative and organizational
capabilities and resourcefulness of BFI President NRK Moorthy, to whom I extend my sincere
gratitude.
I welcome you all once again, and wish the best of luck to the participants!
Mazhar Jafri
Vice President & Chairman, IOC Liaison Committee
Message from the President, BFI
“I welcome all the NBOs to the 17th BFAME Championships. The
venue is good, the climate is good and the playing condition is
good. I wish the players to stay calm & cool, enjoy the hospitality of
the host, and try to produce the best.
We await WBF President, Mr. Gianariggo Rona’s visit during
Valedictory function.
As Zone 4, we need to focus & improve the quantity & quality of players. I am sorry to state that
other than India and partially Pakistan all the other NBOs are lagging behind so much in
improving the Youngsters, Juniors & Girls. I am looking forward to more new challenging
participants in our Zone for the future. Thank you”

Message from the Vice President & Secretary, BFAME
In the backdrop of unpleasant circumstances of payment default of long
outstanding WBF & BFAME dues and lack of requisite resources and
infrastructure which constrained Bridge Federation of Asia and Middle East
(BFAME) to cancel Bahrain as the venue for the 2013 BFAME Championships,
as late as end March and barely four weeks from the previously announced
dates, the short notice bailout by Bridge Federation of India (BFI) in
organizing and hosting these event in Ahmedabad, India from 4th to 11th
June 2013 is indeed commendable.
Having undertaken this arduous task of arranging technical and other aspects of championship
prerequisites, I had to work hard round the clock. The inspiration of encouragement was from my
guardian angel and well wisher whose reassuring words “don’t worry Azwer, we will help you out”
still ring in my ears. I must have exchanged loads of emails with the concerned members of the
organizing team in India and with each other member NBO, though in the process, unfortunately,
due to misconception of facts concerning the cancellation of the Championships in Bahrain and
instead, not awarding it to Jordan, JBF chose to stay out of this prestigious event.
Be it as it may, I really take pride in the fact that despite this set back but with the excellent help
and near perfect coordination from the ever efficient organizing team headed by BFI President
Shri N. R. K. Moorthy, our efforts fructified inasmuch as we were in a position to ensure
participation, in a record short time, of 16 teams, the second highest, from 9 out of 13 BFAME
member NBOs barring two dormant ones. I am particularly indebted to WBF Vice President and
President Emeritus, Mazhar Jafri whose advice and guidance was available to me virtually at
every step.
It now leaves for me to extend my warm welcome to members of all the participating teams,
particularly those from the Middle East region, especially UAE, now joining the folds of BFAME
after a gap of several decades.
My best wishes for the glorious success of these 17th BFAME Championships. I am positive we all
will enjoy the facilities which Gujrat Bridge Federation in Ahmedabad has to offer, particularly my
dear friend Sunit Chokshi who has promised every night a party night. Once again, good luck to
you all!
M. Azwerul Haque
Vice President and Secretary
BFAME
Get Well Soon Mazhar Bhai, We all dearly miss you
Attending a Zone 4 / BFAME championships and not finding Mr. Mazhar Jafri, WBF
senior-most Vice President and BFAME President Emeritus around us, is indeed
unprecedented. Mr. Jafri suffered a mild heart attack in mid March this year and
despite undergoing remarkable recovery, has been advised by his doctors to refrain
from travelling. We shall dearly miss this one person who has always been present in all
the previous 16 BFAME Championships for seeking guidance at every step at the venue
though he shall be contactable otherwise.
We all extend our best wishes to him for prompt and full recovery so that he can travel
to Bali, Indonesia later this year.
Another person missing would be WBF & BFAME Tournament Director, Mr. Ihsan Qadir,
who shall not be amongst us due to some discrepancy in his visa as it could not be
rectified in time.

BFAME, ZONAL CONFERENCE OF WBF
ZONE-4
FORMATION AND GROWTH
The Bridge Federation of Asia & Middle East (BFAME)
was established in 1977 when, having earmarked the
geographical area West of the Bay of Bengal to the
Mediterranean and designating it as Zone 4, the WBF
Executive Council assigned the task of uniting the
NBOs of the aforesaid jurisdictional territory into a ZC
(Zonal Conference) to the then Co-Chairman of the
WBF Zoning Committee, the late James O'Sullivan of
Australia. Upon effective contacts with the NBO of
Bangladesh, India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka, the genial
and duty-conscious WBF Zoning Committee Co-
Chairman provisionally commissioned Zone 4 and its
ZC, later christened as the Bridge Federation of Asia &
the Middle East, at a meeting held in November 1978
at Maurya Sheraton Hotel New Delhi, India. It was also
at this meeting that the BFAME officers were
appointed.
After nearly a year's hectic work by the BFAME
Secretariat, the new zonal federation submitted its
application for the requisite approval of the WBF
Executive Council at its meeting held in Rio de Janeiro,
Brazil in October 1979. The BFAME Secretary, who
presented the application in person, succeeded in
securing ratification of the BFAME subject to fulfilment
of certain requirements of WBF Constitution and By-
Laws. However, upon compliance with these
requirements, the BFAME was accorded the status of a
ZC, in good standing, in the WBF Executive Council
meetings held in Valkenburg, Holland, in Sep 1980.
Starting as a toddling Zonal body with 4 NBOs having
less than 5000 bridge players as their registered
members the BFAME has, over the last nearly 30 years,
grown in size and strength. At Present it has within its
folds NBOs 13 countries of South Asia, Middle East and
West Asia with over 15,000 competitive bridge players
as their members. These are Bahrain, Bangladesh,
India, Jordan, Kuwait, Nepal, Pakistan, Palestine,
Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Sri Lanka, UAE, and Syria.
In 1983, pursuant to a resolution of BFAME Council, and
upon approval of WBF Executive Council, the
geographical jurisdiction of Zone 4 was extended to
the continent of Africa and name of its Zonal
Conference was modified to Bridge Federation of
Africa Asia and the Middle East (BFAAME) with 22
member NBOs.
However, subsequently in 2000, with the formation and
commissioning of a new/separate zone for the
continent of Africa in accordance with the aspiration
of the African NBOs – Zone 8 and its ZC named as
African Bridge Federation, BFAME reverted back to its
original name and jurisdictional area having 13 NBOs
as its members.
The BFAME and BFAAME have sponsored and
conducted 14 biennial Zonal Championships
successfully in 1981 in India, 1983 in Mauritius, 1985 in
Pakistan, 1987 in Sri Lanka, 1989 in Egypt, 1991 in India,
1993 in Mauritius, 1995 in Jordan, 1997 in South Africa,
BFAME Bridge Championships – A Brief Summary
1999 in Sri Lanka, 2001 in Bahrain, 2003 in Jordan, 2005
in Bangladesh and in 2007 in Pakistan.
While the fourteen afore-mentioned championships
will be described in some detail hereunder, it is
noteworthy that these championships were
conducted in line with international standards set by
the WBF, inasmuch as there were proper Conditions of
Contest governing these championships and screens,
Vu-graph and other technical infrastructure were in
operation.
Through its past President and now President Emeritus
who is a member of WBF Executive Council for the last
34 years and is also WBF Vice-President since 1991,
BFAME/Zone 4 has the distinction of making substantial
contribution towards the growth & progress of bridge
worldwide and the future well being of the WBF and its
member NBOs. In this connection, institution of WBF
Infrastructure Development Programme and initiative
for recognition of bridge as a sport by International
Olympic Committee (IOC) stand out.

Well no bulletin can be complete without few
interesting bridge hands and the editor will not like to
disappoint the readers on that point.
But let us first talk about the difference between “a
really good bridge player” viz. a viz. “an average
bridge player”. One of the main hallmark of a good
bridge player is that he hates throwing a single IMP on
a board, whereas an average player will not bother to remember 5-6 IMPs thrown here and there in a match,
if he has made an non-biddable game or a slam with 2
finesses. His day is made, if he has succeeded in doing
something unusual and he will remember those deals
for days to come.
Another important aspect related to a good player is
the thinking part. He will always think WHY? Why
partner has led 2 and not 3. He will check for count,
attitude and other juggleries, and most importantly he
will think on how an iron-clad contract can go down.
Though an average player will also follow these rules,
but finally he will wander and try to find a card in partner’s hand which may beat the contract or will bid
hoping to find the all important card with partner. In
other words average player will play more with instinct
then with technicalities.
But as they say - “There are many tactics to be learnt
for successfully playing the table”.
With the advent of 20-20 and one day games, the
game of Cricket is already seeing new tactics like
reverse sweeps, switch hits etc. and the same is slowly
going to be followed on the bridge table as well. The
bridge playing sharks are on prowl and they also
target TOP players knowing fully well that they will THINK, and THINK in the right direction.
Coming to the hand, the bidding on the table goes as
follows:
West North East South
Pass Pass Pass 1C (1)
Pass 1D(2) Pass 2S (3) Pass 3C(4) Pass 3D(5)
Pass 4C(6) Pass 4NT
Pass 5C(7) Pass 6S All Pass
(1)- 16+ precision; (2) – 0-8 HCPs 3) – 21+ with good
spades (4) – 5+ clubs with 5-8 HCPs (with <4 he will
bid 2NT as 2nd negative); (5) Forward going bid (6) – 6+ clubs; (7) – 1 or 4 Aces.
West leads the H2 (leads are 3rd / 5th) and the dummy comes down with N: ♠2, ♥743, ♦542, ♣AKJxxx.
Declarer plays the three. Your hand is:
♠Tx, ♥KT9, ♦QT8, ♣T98xx
You play the King and declarer plays the HQ. What
card you return.
Now coming back to my philosophy on “Good player”,
he will start counting. They play 3rd / 5th, so in this
case with 3 cards each in dummy & his hand and
declarer having singleton Queen, why partner led the
6th card and why not 5th card. But he is not an average
player. He is really a good player. So further thinking
is required. Why partner will under lead his heart Ace
and lead 2. With 6 club cards in dummy and 5 with
him, the only possibility why partner is under leading
and playing the H2 is partner asking for a club ruff.
WELL DONE PARTNER. Here you take the ruff. East
leads the Club 10. But The full hand:

Declarer throws his diamond losers and claims with a
remark – “My guess was correct, you are really a good
and thinking player”. Beware of Sharks
Another hand on the same philosophy. Bidding is:
West North East South
1D DBL 3D(1) Pass Pass DBL Pass 3H
Pass 4H All Pass
3D by East is pre-emptive. West leads Diamond Ace
and East throws the DQ, confirming the DJ. West now
plays spade Jack. The dummy is:
♠AKQT, ♥KT9, ♦xx, ♣AKJx and your hand is
♠8765, ♥QJ876, ♦xx, ♣xx. How you plan to play.
You are a top category player, and are clear that your
contract is safe unless, West can score a ruff in spade.
As per the bidding, West is surely holding the trump
Ace. You may throw your diamond loser by taking club
finesse (in theory) but you can’t come up before
playing hearts. If you play trump, West will win with
Ace, play diamond to West’s Jack and get the ruff. But
any good or average bridge player knows the meaning
of “cutting the communication”. So the best play is win
the SJ with Ace, play club Ace & King and play the club
Jack. If East wins ruff it otherwise discard the losing
diamond from hand breaking their communication.
What happens? West wins the club queen and plays
another spade. Was that the end of the story? No.
When declarer now plays the trump, West wins with
Ace and plays the 3rd spade. The ruff was taken but
not by West but by East. One down. The full hand:
