Industrial trucks in charge!Best known as a pioneer of electromobility, China-based BYD is at CeMAT 2016 to showcase its latest innovations as a forklift truck manufacturer and battery specialist – highlights include large-scale applications for cutting-edge lithium iron phosphate battery technology.

Within a remarkably short space of time, China-based battery specialist and forklift truck manufacturer BYD (“Build your dreams”) has become the largest producer of rechargeable battery units in the world, and was named the world’s highest-performing technology company by U.S. business magazine Bloomberg Businessweek in 2010. At CeMAT in Hannover this year, BYD Europe is exhibiting a range of intelligent and

efficient industrial trucks that offer huge savings potential across the value-added chain – all under the slogan “Save money. SaFe battery. Safe future.” The innovations on show include the IFOY-nominated ECB18C electric forklift, the PTP20H low-lift pallet truck with flip-down platform and top speeds of 12 km/h, and the EPS14 electric high-lift pallet truck with a 3 kW hoist motor and a 1.5 kW AC drive motor. Meanwhile, the T50 electric tugger train features a tow load capacity of 5 metric tons and a powerful, maintenance-free 48V AC three-phase motor, making it perfect for tugger and logistics trains.

The key added-value advantage of all the BYD electric industrial trucks on show is the exceptionally robust and reliable (“SaFe”) lithium iron phosphate battery technology (LiFePO) they use – a major focus for BYD at present. Already accredited with a number of safety certifications, LiFePO batteries can be recharged quickly whenever required without negative memory effects. Even after eight years or 10,000 hours in operation, BYD guarantees 65 percent battery capacity. The technology is specifically designed for fast charging – the T50, for instance, can be fully charged within just one hour. This leads to major savings in multi-shift operation, as it cuts out both the financial costs and time involved in replacing removable batteries and also eliminates the need for dedicated battery storage space. In total, BYD estimates potential savings of up to 40 percent compared to average costs.BYD Europe B.V. (3125 BK Schiedam, Netherlands), Hall 25, Stand F11

If only Archimedes had known... To move the Earth, Archimedes claimed all he needed was a place to stand and a long enough lever. He would certainly have been excited to see the revolutionary lifting technology on display at CeMAT 2016 – all thanks to the most powerful swivel shackles in history.

Over 25 years ago, CODIPRO – part of the ALIPA Group – filed the first patent for a swivel shackle designed to act as a single connection point for lifting and turning loads. Since then, the Luxembourg-based company has grown from strength to strength and now produces some 100,000 of these practical swivel shackles per year, exporting them to more than 60 different countries. At CeMAT 2016, CODIPRO is showcasing the Giga DSS – the strongest swivel shackle the world has ever seen.

With a safety factor of 5, the new Giga DSS can safely support loads of up to 125 metric tons – the equivalent of a CASTOR container. It can be used directly with the hook of the traveling crane and is available as a standard model or a high-speed version with a tensioning system. The high-strength swivel shackle is delivered with robust, practical packaging to simplify installation, while the double articulation ensures that it can be lined up perfectly with the sling. What’s more, CODIPRO can also meet requests for modified axle lengths and special threads such as the UNC or UNF standards.Codiprolux S.A. (9559 Wiltz, Luxembourg), Hall 27, Stand K62/1

Take your pick!Munich-based startup Magazino is at CeMAT in Hannover this year with the TORU Cube – the latest version of a mobile picker robot that can now also be used for rectangular objects.

There are sectors where startups are now driving progress. For instance, up-and-coming companies even have their own dedicated display area at CeBIT, the world’s leading trade fair for digital business. By contrast, CeMAT 2016 – the world’s leading trade fair for intralogistics and supply chain management – is a little more conservative, featuring predominantly well-established (although no less innovative) manufacturers and exhibitors. However, a closer look reveals there are several industry newcomers here, as well. One example is Munich-based robotics startup Magazino, which is making full use of this unique opportunity to present its TORU Cube mobile picker robot to an international audience.

An optimized version of an earlier prototype, the TORU Cube combines intelligent object recognition with high-precision gripper technology, and now also supports item-specific picking for rectangular objects such as books, cartons and shoeboxes. The TORU Cube consists of a mobile base, a retractable and rotatable column with a gripper system, and a new detachable picking shelf with configurable levels. Meanwhile, the rotating lifting column has a variable operating height of 10 cm to 200 cm and supports picking on both sides of a warehouse aisle with a distinctly human-like range of mobility. An integrated safety laser ensures obstacles are avoided and also responds to real human colleagues so that they can work together in harmony.No. 056/2016 – EN – 101-as 4/24

While prestigious forklift truck manufacturer CLARK is looking to reposition itself in warehouse technology with the premiere of the CLARK Compact series, it is also exhibiting the GTS20-33, an old-school counterbalanced forklift.

When in 1917 axle manufacturer CLARK developed the first forklift for transporting materials in-house, few could have predicted just how successful this invention would become. Today, almost one hundred years later, CLARK Europe GmbH is showcasing the CLARK Compact series at CeMAT 2016. This innovative electric high- and low-lift pallet truck sees the company breaking new ground in warehouse technology, with the aim of boosting its growth in this sector. Yet the Duisburg-based company is also staying true to its roots with another new product it is exhibiting – the GTS20-33 counterbalanced forklift.

The new electric high-lift pallet truck from the CLARK Compact series can lift up to 4.8 meters with a load-bearing capacity of up to two metric tons. The load-bearing capacity of the low-lift pallet truck varies from 1.5 to 2.0 metric tons depending on the configuration and – with a top speed of up to 12 km/h – it’s also particularly nimble. Both trucks are made using standard components produced in Europe and can be customized to meet users’ individual needs – for example as a cold store version. Strikingly different When it comes to lifting, moving, pulling, driving and conveying, the chain systems and components from RUD Ketten Rieger & Dietz GmbH are a popular first choice. At CeMAT 2016, the company is presenting five world premieres.

At CeMAT 2016, RUD GmbH from Germany’s Swabia region promises a veritable array of technology under the banner “Strikingly different.” The company is exhibiting no fewer than five world premieres and six CeMAT firsts at its stand in the MOVE & LIFT area – the VIP Load Ring Thread Plus (VLBG-Plus), the ICE Load Ring for Bolting Super Rotation (ICE-LBG-SR), the Automatic Center Point (ACP), the Safety Tex Point (STP), the All-round Lifting Point (B-ABA) and the ICE-STAR line.

Yet it isn’t just the sheer volume of innovations that is impressive but also their position on the global market. Take the ICE-STAR line, for example, which is on show at CeMAT 2016 and described by the company as “the world’s lightest cross-beam combination.” Or the ICE-LBG-SR, with double SR-ball bearing and ICE-bolt, which is designed to support complete force transmission in all possible directions. This solution is set to be the first lifting point with asymmetric force transmission that can be rotated when under load and is ideal for rotating, turning and tipping all loads while ensuring that the fixing bolts are not unintentionally loosened.RUD Ketten Rieger & Dietz GmbH u. Material-flow expert Baust is exhibiting its entire portfolio of pallet changers at CeMAT 2016 in Hannover and placing the new fully electric PW 800 E center stage.

Baust GmbH from Langenfeld near Düsseldorf, Germany, is at CeMAT 2016 to exhibit its extensive material-flow portfolio to the global logistics community. Electric or pneumatic drives, stand-alone or inline machines, clamping, tilting, turning or pushing methods – the complete range of Baust pallet changers is on show. And the star is the new fully electric PW 800 E pallet changer, which is appearing at CeMAT for the very first time.

The electric drive in the PW 800 E presents a host of advantages over commonplace hydraulic drives. The most obvious of these is the pleasantly low noise emissions of the PW 800 E in the workplace. But the electric drive also makes the pallet changer extremely energy-efficient, low-maintenance and leakage-free – after all, electricity doesn’t drip like hydraulics can! Like the original PW 800, the new e-version supports ground level, ergonomic pallet handling and is reliable even when using poor quality pallets. What’s more, thanks to its smaller tilt angle, the PW 800 E doesn’t need a pallet clamp. Baust & Co GmbH (40764 Langenfeld, Germany), Hall 27, Stand K49

The team of experts at PSI Technics GmbH conducts valuable research and development in positioning technology to provide custom solutions for specific applications. They are also the brains behind the ARATEC positioning solution system that’s making its CeMAT debut this year. ARATEC is designed for use in fully automated high-bay warehouses, for example, where it instructs stacker cranes to move to the storage position’s target coordinates and ensure that all storage and retrieval operations are carried out carefully, extremely accurately and as quickly as possible.

By using systems analyses to comprehensively evaluate logistics facilities, PSI Technics GmbH has in recent years been able to uncover significant optimization potential in many of its customers’ facilities. In particular, it has shown that conventional positioning solutions cause critical vibration in warehouse structures that leads to increased wear, premature failures and high cycle times. The ARATEC system on show at CeMAT 2016 takes due account of how the systems in a warehouse operate and ensures that automatic crane systems and conveyor, lifting and transportation systems are positioned with top precision – even under the toughest conditions.PSI Technics GmbH (56220 Urmitz, Germany), Hall 27, Stand B64, (10)

Both doors are designed specifically for industrial use and have exceptionally low maintenance requirements. To help ensure the safety of personnel working with machines and equipment, these doors can be used in combination with the machinery’s control system as stand-alone safety separators. The safety limit switch – which is responsible for the locking action and for checking the door is in the safely locked position – can be connected to the relevant machine control system. The main closing edge is secured via a contact strip and an optional light No. 056/2016 – EN – 101-as 19/24

On show at CeMAT in Hannover this year, the new HG 45000ZA safety laser scanner from Götting KG is designed to reliably detect anyone obstructing the path of an automated guided vehicle (AGV), and boasts credentials including SIL2 certification and performance level PL d. Particularly suitable for AGVs and remote-controlled vehicles used in industrial environments, the system activates a safety function as soon as a person is detected so that the vehicle can be slowed down or brought to a complete standstill.

The system consists of a laser scanner that acts as a sensor and is mounted on the vehicle to scan the path ahead, and an interpreter unit that is connected to the scanner via a cable and can be placed in a protected position inside the vehicle. Using a defined angular range and two superimposed planes, the laser scanner sensor scans how far the vehicle is from its surroundings in small angular increments and thus monitors No. 056/2016 – EN – 101-as 21/24

the route ahead to check for obstacles and ascertain whether the route is complete and level. As soon as any deviation from the prescribed values is detected, the interpreter unit activates an emergency stop.

The system is based on the principle of measuring how long it takes for light to bounce back and works at travel speeds of up to 10 km/h. What’s more, it is the first solution on the market that can also detect obstacles reliably in changing environmental conditions both indoors and outdoors.Götting KG (31275 Lehrte, Germany), Halle 27, Stand D44 +D45

Go with the flow Glatten-based vacuum specialist Schmalz is at CeMAT 2016 to celebrate the première of a new range of oval tubular bag suction cups specifically designed for dynamic flow-wrap packaging processes.

These days, the logistics industry is home to a huge variety of sometimes highly automated packaging technologies. One example is flow-wrapping, a process in which products are sealed inside a thin film at high speed. With up to 600 parts packaged per minute, flow-wrapping is an exceptionally dynamic application and presents a number of challenges when it comes to handling workpieces. This is precisely why vacuum specialist Schmalz has developed the new SPOB1f range of oval tubular bag suction cups specifically for the flow-wrap process. This innovative new solution is on show for the first time at CeMAT 2016 in Hannover.

The new SPOB1f bag suction pad is deployed directly after the flow-wrapping stage as a safe and reliable means of packing the products into cartons. Each suction cup is equipped with a thin, flexible sealing lip to ensure that film-packaged products are handled with special care – even when surfaces are damp or frosty. Currently the only oval-shaped bag suction cup on the market for tubular bag packaging, the SPOB1f delivers an extremely high holding force that is between 30 and 50 percent stronger than that of two round suction cups. What’s more, thanks to the FDA-compliant silicon material, the suction cup can also be used in direct contact with food products. As a result, it is ideal for use on small, medium-size or narrow products in the consumer goods sector, such as ice creams, candy bars and cereal bars. J. Schmalz GmbH (72293 Glatten, Germany), Hall 13, Stand C46Special delivery!Bavaria-based logistics software supplier WANKO is at CeMAT 2016 with a new mobile scanning solution for loading and unloading operations that supports both Windows and Android smartphones.

Smartphones have become an ever-present part of everyday life now but their potential is far from exhausted – so why not put them to use in the logistics industry? This idea is already being developed by companies such as WANKO Informationslogistik GmbH from Ainring in Bavaria, which has designed a mobile scanning solution for loading and unloading operations and has opted to unveil it to a wide international audience at CeMAT 2016 in Hannover.

Designed for end-to-end consignment tracking, the solution consists of one app for loading and one for unloading. These can be used on a wide range of mobile devices in different price brackets and performance categories, as long as they support Windows or Android operating systems. The devices access the relevant route and consignment data via the WANKO “Prabord” telematics software. The company claims that this ensures all processes are recorded accurately from the moment the goods are accepted right through to delivery – and the solution can also be customized to suit different industries. What’s more, the bidirectional interface between the web front end and the WANKO route optimization system means that orders can be processed in next to no time and reported back to the online order system – all of which is clearly crucial given the current trend for same-day delivery.WANKO Informationslogistik GmbH (83404 Ainring, Germany), Hall 27, Stand C43
