As someone who grew up in this area, I recognize that The Partnership is important, especially within this city, which still faces some significant struggles with race andequality. It’s important to have The Partnership in existence to be supportive andto advance professionals from multicultural backgrounds. Advancement comes fromthe top down and bottom up. People need to be empowered, to feel they can breakin. I love this city. I want us to do better.

The year was 1987, and the newly-formed Partnership took upthe mantle to transform the city of Boston. It was a challengingmoment in history for the city. The anti-busing riots of 1974 hadbecome a focal point in the struggle for equality. Vivid memoriesof tumultuous resistance to court-ordered desegregationlingered. Racial tension had only intensified Boston’s reputation asan inhospitable environment for people of color.

Two groups of civic, business and education leaders formed TheBoston Committee and The Corporation for Boston, to addressthe climate of racial tension. In 1987, the two organizationsmerged under the banner of The Partnership, Inc. The Partnership’sformation thirty years ago laid the foundation for equippingmulticultural leaders and area employers to thrive in an increasinglydynamic and diverse Commonwealth - and beyond.

The Partnership, Inc. was born from a shared commitment totransform the regional culture, invest in visionary diverse leaderswho would strengthen Boston’s economic platform, and transformBoston into a destination of choice for people of all backgrounds. The Partnership’s mission was developed to address what manyhad called a “brain drain” in Boston. Hundreds of AfricanAmerican and other leaders of color had come to Bostonfor higher education and early career placements, but wouldleave soon thereafter. Through corporate sponsored retentionprograms, The Partnership devoted its efforts to building acritical mass of people of color who would aspire to come, choose to stay, and become influential in the city’s economic, civic, and social spheres.

Thirty years later, The Partnership’s impact is evident through itscontinued growth. Its work has evolved from an original focuson the advancement of African Americans in corporate Boston, into an organization that supports multicultural professionals andtheir employers in an increasingly diverse and global workforce.Over the last three decades, The Partnership has collaboratedwith 300 organizations and helped more than 4,000 diverseprofessionals reach their full potential in Boston and beyond.

I started The Partnership’s Biodiversity Fellows program thinking it would be agood way to bolster my leadership skill sets and learn tips to be more effective atwork. From the first session, The Partnership blew me away! I found myselfthrowing away my playbook. Until The Partnership, I had limited whatI thought I could be. I’m now more deliberate in my actions and mindful aboutmy impact. As professionals (and decision-makers) of color, we should rethinkour mentality, and not simply look to assimilate or be a part of “their” system. We are members - not guests - who should think about bringing our differenceto the table and making the system better.

FINDING STRENGTH IN DIFFERENCES

The Partnership’s Martha’s VineyardLeadership Conference, circa 2000.

Across the STEM industry, there continues to be an under representation of womenand people of color and as a consequence, these groups tend to feel disconnected andoften leave the industry without reaching their full potential. For me personally, ThePartnership helped to close this gap by introducing me to other professionals of color inmy industry whom I otherwise would not have met. These connections, brokered byThe Partnership team, went a long way in my remaining in the STEM industry andhelped me to gain valuable insight about valuing who you are, what you want andspeaking truth to power—essentials for obtaining full potential in any industry.

Participating in The Partnership’s NGEprogram is one of the best decisions I’ve evermade. The Partnership allows you to fosterthe power to make a difference and changethe world with a group of like-minded people. We all have an inner voice that questionswhether we belong. The Partnership helpsyou to speak to that fear and insecurity, andremove doubt about being authentic.

When I was being recruited to Boston, ThePartnership invited me to the inauguralC-suite program event at former GovernorPatrick’s home. It was amazing to have thatmany C-level professionals of color in oneplace! The event defied my perception thatMassachusetts is a pretty closed-off community. It was incredibly welcoming! Everyone was sogracious and engaging. The Partnership helpedmy family to be optimistic about choosingBoston as an environment to raise our kids.

My recollection of Boston, then & now, is a love/hate relationship. I came to Boston fromNashville in the late 1970’s and was told that parts of town were not safe to visit. In 1987,my wife and I said we were never coming back. We didn’t feel it was a very welcomingplace. We loved all of Boston’s reputation from academic institutions and being an excitingplace, but didn’t want to live here because of the racial climate. We returned to a VERY,very different city. Things have changed. There are still issues, but it is not the BostonI had remembered.

Paul Alexander, Chief Marketing & Communications Officer, Eastern Bank
