2.0 BASIC OPERATIONBoth the Spectra 1686H and 1686V LED Keypadsfunction and display information the same way. Thefollowing sections provide you with an introduction to thebuttons and indicator lights on your keypad.

2.1 AUDITORY FEEDBACKWhen you enter information on the keypad, it will guideyou with beep tones that communicate acceptance orrejection of your entries:

Confirmation Beep: When an operation (i.e. arming/disarming) is successfully entered or when the systemswitches to a new status/mode, the keypad emits anintermittent beep (BEEP-BEEP-BEEP-BEEP).

Rejection Beep: When the system reverts to previousstatus or when an operation is incorrectly entered, thekeypad emits a continuous beep tone (BEEEEEEEEP).

2.2 KEYPAD INDICATOR LIGHTSAll Spectra LED Keypads include colored lights whichconvey your system’s current status. As explained inFigure 2-1 on page 5, the state of each light represents aspecific condition in your system.

    2.3 ZONE DISPLAY†

The numerical buttons on the 1686V/H Keypads aredesigned to communicate the status of the zones in yoursystem. Each button corresponds to a zone in yoursystem. If a button’s light is off (extinguished), thecorresponding zone is closed. If a button’s light is on(illuminated), the corresponding zone is open (i.e. opendoor, movement detected, etc.).

2.4 ALARM MEMORY DISPLAYIf an alarm has occurred on a zone, the [MEM] button willilluminate. All zones where alarms occurred will bestored in the memory. After disarming the system, pressthe [MEM] button to illuminate the buttons correspondingto the zones that were in alarm (see section 2.3). 3.0 PROGRAMMING ACCESS CODESAccess Codes are personal identification numbers thatallow you to arm, disarm, and enter certain programmingmodes. The Spectra 1727 security system supports thefollowing:1 System Master Code7 User Access Codes

For information on how each Access Code can arm ordisarm the system, refer to the table on page 8.

3.1 SYSTEM MASTER CODEThe System Master Code can arm or disarm the systemusing any of the methods described in section 4.0 andcan create, modify or delete any User Access Code (seesection 3.2). (Default: 123456)

3.2 PROGRAMMING ACCESS CODESYour system can use either 4- or 6-digit Access Codes(see page 19), where each digit can be any value from 0to 9. Six-digit codes are considered more difficult to“crack” and, therefore, more secure. Avoid programmingsimple or obvious access codes, such as your telephonenumber, address or codes such as 1234.

6.0 FIRE ALARMSUpon a fire alarm, the bell/siren will squawk every 0.5seconds until silenced or reset by entering a valid accesscode.

Minimizing Fire HazardsThe three most common causes of fires:• Cooking is the leading cause of home fires in the U.S

and the leading cause of fire injuries. Cooking firesoften result from unattended cooking and human errorrather than mechanical failure of stoves or ovens.

    • Careless smoking is the leading cause of fire deaths.Smoke detectors and smolder-resistant bedding andupholstered furniture are significant fire deterrents.

    • Heating is the second leading cause of residentialfires. However, heating fires are a larger problem insingle family homes than in apartments since theheating systems in single family homes are often notprofessionally maintained.

What do I do if a Fire Zone was set off accidentally?

    1) Enter your [ACCESS CODE]. 2) Try to correct the problem.3) If the problem persists, the alarm will sound again.

    Enter the [ACCESS CODE] again.

Fire Safety Tips • In the event of a fire, remember time is the biggest

enemy and every second counts! Escape first, thencall for help. Develop a home fire escape plan anddesignate a meeting place outside. Make sureeveryone in the family knows two ways to escapefrom every room. Practice feeling your way out withyour eyes closed. Never stand up in a fire, alwayscrawl under the smoke and try to keep your mouthcovered. Never return to a burning building for anyreason; it may cost you your life.

    • Having at least one working smoke alarm dramaticallyincreases your chances of surviving a fire. Rememberto practice a home escape plan frequently with yourfamily.

Providing a Fire Warning SystemHousehold fires are especially dangerous at night. Firesproduce smoke and deadly gases that can overcomeoccupants while they sleep. To warn against fire, smokedetectors should be installed outside each separatesleeping area in the immediate vicinity of the bedroomsand on each additional story of the family living unit, including basements.

7.0 TESTING & MAINTENANCEWith the system disarmed and the READY Light on,activate motion detectors by walking in the protectedarea. Open and close protected doors and verify that thecorresponding button illuminates. Do not use an openflame or burning materials to test your fire detectiondevices. Your installer can advise you of the best way totest your particular system.

Under normal use, your system requires virtually nomaintenance other than regular testing. It isrecommended that the standby battery be changedevery three years. Speak to your installer about thenecessary tests and at what frequency they should beperformed.
