RAMSBOTTOM is a large manufacturing village (or town), situated mostly in the town­ ship of Tottington, lower end, parish of Bury, hundred ofSalford, diocese of Manchester,

and in the electoral division of South-East Lancashire.It is a station on the East Lancashire Section of the Lancashire and Yorkshire Rail­

way, 13| miles from Manchester, 4 north from Bury, 8 from Bacup and Accrington, and 7 by road from Bolton.

The Messrs. Ashton first introduced the cotton trade into the neighbourhood at the commencement of the present century, and Sir R. Peel (the first baronet) established the calico {Minting business here, which afterwards was successfully carried on by the well- known firm of William Grant and Brothers. At present the trade of the district is in a nourishing condition. Cotton spinning and manufacturing is largely carried on by numerous firms; there are also calico printing and bleaching and finishing works, paper mills, iron and brass foundries, Ac.

The manufacture of cotton, woollen and linen cloths for machinery, at the works of Messrs. Porritt, employs a large number'of operatives.

The plentiful supply of water, obtainable from the river Irwell, fed by numerous streams from the adjoining hilly district, together with the establishment of railway com­ munication has materially aided in the advancement of Earns bottom to its position as a place of no small importance in the commercial world. It is situated principally on a western side of the Irwefl, on ground rising from the bank of the river to the foot of Holcombe hill. The Church of the establiament dedicated to St. Paul, erected in 1850, is an elegant stone edifice. The site was given by Messrs. Ashton who also contributed largely towards its erection, and the remainder of the cost was raised by subscription. It was enlarged in 1866-7 and is capable of seating about 700 persons ; one-half of the sittings are free. At the eastern end of the north aisle is a memorial window presented by William Grant, Esq., of Nuttall Hall, in remembrance of that distinguished nobleman and statesman, the late Lord Palmerston. The living is a vicarage in the gift of the Crown and Bishop of Manchester alternately, and is now held by the Rev. J. H. Butcher. The Schools at­ tached to the Church are in the immediate neighbourhood, and, having been recently enlarged, will afford accommodation for about 700 scholars. In addition to the Week-day and Sunday Schools, evening classes have been established for the working classes, under the superintendance of the master, Mr. John Oversby.

The church dedicated to St. Andrews, in connection with the establishment of Scotland, was erected by the late William Grant, Esq. It is a stone edifice in the Gothic style of architecture, with a tower of elegant proportions, surmounted by pinnacles ; the interior of the building is beautifully decorated, and contains several monuments erected to the memory of the Grant family.

The Baptists have a neat stone chapel in Bolton street, and the various bodies of Wes- leyans hate chapels in the town and neighbourhood.

The Swedenborgian chapel is in Ramsbottom lane, and the Roman Catholic Chapel, dedicated to St. Joseph, is in Bolton street.

A Public Library was established here in 1838, and contains upwards of 1,200 volumes, There are News and Reading Rooms connected with the Liberal and Conservative Associa­ tions, and Public Institute.

The Oddfellows' Hall in Bridge street, erected in 1849, at a cost of <£900, is used for public meetings, concerts, &c.

St. Andrew's Home, a charitable institution for destitute female children, was estab- ished here in 1868 by Mrs. Grant, and is mainly supported by that benevelent lady.

The Gas Company, established in 1854, have their works at Stubbins ; Mr. Chatwood is the manager.

Ramsbottom is the polling place for Tottington Higher and Tottington Lower end.The Copyhold Courts for the manor of Tottington are held here. The small portion of

the town lying over the river bridge is in the township of Walmerslcy and Shuttleworth.The population of Ramsbottom is returned with that of Tottington, which in 1851 was

10,691; and in 1861, 11,764; at present it is estimated at about 14,000.Holcombe village is about half-a-mile from Ramsbottom in the township of Tottington

Lower end. The ancient chapel erected in the 16th century, was taken down in 1853, and the present beautiful edifi/c erected. It is dedicated to Emanuel, and is built of stone in the Gothic style of architecture, surmounted with a lofty spire. It contains 540 sittings, all of which are free. The living is a rectory in the patronage of the incumbent of Bury, and is held by the Rev. George Nightingale, M.A. A commodious school is attached to the Churc.h

On Holcombe hill stands a square stone tower, erected in 1851-2, at a cost of .£800 to the memory of the late Sir R. Peel, the 2nd Baronet. An excellent view of the surround­ ing country being obtainable from the tower, is much frequented by pleasure parties in the summer season. At Holcombe brook, 1£ miles from Ramsbottom, are several cotton manufactories, chemical works, and a large establishment for engraving of calico printers' copper rollers.

Shuttleworth is a village and chapelry 4£ miles north from Bury, and 4 south-east from Haslingden. It is an indepcndant parish extending over an area of about 2,689 statute acres, and contains several cotton manufactories and a paper mill. Excellent stone for building and paving purposes is obtainable from the quarries, and in the adjacent hills are several coal mines. The church dedicated to St. John, consecrated in 1849, is a neat stone edifice in the style of architecture prevailing in the 14th century. The living is a perpetual curacy, of the annual value of £160 in the gift of the Crown and Bishop of Manchester alternately ; the present minister is the Rev. Hugh P. Hughes. The schools attached to the Church have been enlarged since their erection in 1849, and are well attended. The Baptists have a chapel school here. The Mechanics' Institute in Back lane, contains library, billiard and news rooms.

Edenfield is a pleasantly situated village in the township of Tottington Higher end, 2 miles from Ramsbottom, and about 5 from Bury. The various manufacturing establishments in the immediate neighbourhood have mainly contributed to the prosperity of the village. In the neighbourhood are several stone quarries. The church originally erected during the reign of Queen Elizabeth, was rebuilt in 1778, is a stone edifice capable of seating 750 persons. It has recently undergone extensive alterations and repairs. The living is of the annual value of £150, under the patronage of the Rector of Bury. The present minister is the Rev. J. P. Yco. Commodious schools are attached to the church.

The Congregational Church at Stubbins, in this township, is a beautiful structure erected on an elevation commanding extensive views of the surrounding country. It is built of fine white freestone, presented by the Messrs. Porritt, of Stubbins vale. The style of architecture is the perpendicular Gothic. At the south-west corner a graceful spire rises to

miles from Bury. The township is divided for local purposes into the township of Totting­ ton Lower end and Tottington Higher end.

The Copyhold Manor, originally an appanage of the Crown, was in successive possession of the house of Lincoln and Lancaster, and the seats of the superior courts to which the manor of Bury, Middleton, Chadderton and Alkrington hold suit and service. It was given with other manors by Charles II. to General Monk, Duke of Albemarle, as a portion of his reward for services to the house of Stuart. The Albemarle possessions were vested in Lady Montague, and from her the manor descended to the present Duke of Buccleuch. Popula­ tion of the township in 1861, 11,764. Total acreage, 5,083. The present population of the parish is about 6,000 ; and of the township about 14,000.

The church dedicated to St. Ann, erected in 1799, underwent considerable repairs in 1844, and in 1867 the pews and private boxes were replaced by benches with kneeling room, and other internal improvements effected. The living is a vicarage in the gift of the rector of Bury, and is held by the Rev. G. S. F. Perry. The school connected with the Church, erected in 1835, at a cost of £700, is well attended.

St. John's Free Church is a stone edifice, erected in 1867 at a cost of £1,500, capable of accommodating about 400 persons. The service is conducted in accordance with the rules of the Established Church, though not in connection with it. A Day and Sunday School is attached to the Church.

The Wesleyans have a large chapel here, and the school recently erected, capable of accommodating 800 scholars, may be considered a model for educational establishments. The upper and lower stories are divided into class rooms, with a separate room for infants. The total cost of the school was £2,000, raised by subscription.

The Congregational Church at Green mount is a handsome Gothic edifice with a lofty spire, erected in 1S66-7, at a cost of £3,330. The Eev. F. Carter is the minister. The old chapel is now used for school purposes.

In the immediate neighbourhood of the village are bleach works, cotton manufacturing establishments, &c.
