Wildlife & Habitat Management staff maintain SCCF preserves to remove

exotics and sustain a native wildlife habitat;

Sea Turtle & Shorebird Management staff work to sustain productive

nesting patterns for sea turtles and shorebirds;

Native Landscapes & Garden Center staff encourage the use of native

plants and sustainable gardening practices;

Marine Laboratory scientists use science-based research to sustain the

water quality that, despite manmade challenges, still defines our estuary;

Environmental Education staff share the SCCF story with new audiences

at our Nature Center, at our Bailey Homestead and with public outreach

in compelling and engaging ways, so they too will want to sustain the

sanctuary islands we are honored to protect and preserve.

You can support these programs with gifts for a loved one or for yourself

from this year’s SCCF catalog which highlights current special needs.

Some items are ongoing needs and a few are in the category of “hopes

During nesting season for Snowy Plovers, LeastTerns, and Wilson’s Plovers many volunteersmark off the nesting sites and monitor behaviorfrom a distance. Binoculars are an essential toolfor this job. Trail cameras allow observation of thenests 24/7 for predation events and confirmationof nest hatchings.

PROTECT THE SHOREBIRDS

Diamondback Terrapins and an Indigo Snake live in displays at the NatureCenter along with several types of fresh water turtles.These animals arecared for by the Wildlife & Habitat Management Staff. They all have healthyappetites and are supplied with meals, which range from rodents tomealworms and other dry food. Critter food: $70.00 monthly

FEED THE CRITTERS

Pit-tags are microchips used to permanentlyidentify individual research animals in thewild. Biologists at SCCF are conductingmark and recapture projects on several rareand long-lived species that need to betagged for future identification for researchand possible poaching incidents.

Wildlife & Habitat Management researchers need a new field camera to takediagnostic photos of research animals such as Florida Box Turtles,Diamondback Terrapin, and the Eastern Indigo Snake. The newly established Observation Hive at the Nature Center provides afascinating window on the life of Honey Bees. Visitors can follow theseasonal behavior of all the types of bees that serve the queen and theworking of the hive. Maintenance supplies are necessary to keep the beeshumming. 6-Month Supply: $100.00

GIVE A HOOT

Last winter’s island barn owl sightings at the Nature Center and SCCF’sBailey Homestead were the first in many years. We began monitoring barnowls in 1984 and the last observed island nesting was in 2005. Help thebarn owl population grow and thrive on Sanibel once again to help in rodentcontrol instead of using rat poisons that can harm them and other islandcreatures.

RESTORE OUR ESTUARY

To reduce nutrients in the Caloosahatchee estuary, SCCF Marine Labscientists plant plugs of submerged tape grass. Submerged plants providehabitat for fisheries, food for manatees, and remove dissolved nutrientsfrom the water. Tape grass Planting: $25.00 (50 plants)

NEW PURPOSE

Several island restaurants including TheTimbers and Lazy Flamingo recycleshucked oyster shells for use in Marine Labrestoration projects in San Carlos Bay. Yourcontribution will help cover the cost ofcollecting the shell. Recycle Oyster Shells: $100.00

MARINE LABORATORY

TO THE RESCUE

Marine Lab and Sea Turtle staff iscalled many times during the year toassist with the rescue of a distressedsea turtle, manatee, or dolphin in ourwaters. Your gift helps defray theexpenses associated with being therewhen needed. Animal Rescue: $150.00

BIKES FOR INTERNS

Our Interns often come from outside SW Florida. They use bikes to travelfrom housing to assist with sea grass monitoring, water sampling, seaturtle monitoring and other activities. Some of our interns also conductindependent research projects and present their results with publicprograms at the Nature Center. BAILEY HOMESTEAD

Propagating rare and unusual Florida native plants has been a coremission of the Native Landscapes & Garden Center since its founding 40years ago. With the move to the Bailey Homestead, the Native Landscape& Garden Center has been growing plants in its former location at areduced rate, due to the aging of the former facility and the difficulty ofoperating in two locations. Help complete the vision for the BaileyHomestead with the construction of a new propagation facility. Propagation Facility: $80,000.00

KEEP ON TRUCKIN’

The Native Landscapes & Garden Center staff members are out andabout on the islands on a daily basis. Our Dodge Sprinter landscapingtruck has been a reliable tool to help create native landscapes for over 10years now, and is approaching its lifespan. Wildlife Habitat Management needs anew tractor to maintain SCCFconservation lands. This is the mostimportant piece of equipment used inour work for maintaining fire lines,keeping work trails open, moving dirtand mowing areas of heavy brush thatcannot be burned. John Deere Tractor: $55,000.00

TROLLING FOR RESEARCH

A trolling motor for Marine Lab boats will help themmap shallow water oyster reefs and sea grass flats.The electric motors can be mounted to a kayak orother small boat and used in combination withsurvey equipment to create maps of natural andrestored oyster reefs. It is also useful for samplingin no combustion motor zone such a Wulfert Flats. Trolling Motor: $1,250.00

SLIP ON

The SCCF Prescribed Burn Program needs a slip-on unit for its F350Pick-up truck. The unit is a large metal chassis with a water tank,hose and pump that can be dropped into a pick-up truck to create atemporary or permanent fire truck to enable our team to have asecond 4X 4 fire truck during prescribed burns and wildfires. Slip on Fire unit: $14,000.00

FIRE UP THE RADIOS

The Prescribed Burn Program also needs more digital radios. Over thelast few decades, we used analog radios to keep in contact with otherworkers and agencies during burns. The agencies have switched todigital radios to broaden and sharpen their communication ability. Weneed to upgrade to digital radios so we can continue to have efficientcontact.
