A Note from the Chairman

Since its conception in 1995, the Janus Awards have played an integral part in identifying and acknowledging unparalleled excellence amongst you, our hospitality & tourism professionals. Your unwavering contribution and dedication is to be commended and applauded. The service, warmth of welcome and passion that you deliver demonstrates why Northern Ireland is a destination of choice.

This year we had a record number of entrants which spanned across a variety of industry sectors.

Every year, the standard of our finalists continue to exceed all expectations, and this year the competition level was exceptionally high. The judges commented on the very high standard of all our candidates, and expressed how difficult their decisions were in choosing the category winners. It is very encouraging and rewarding to know that the future of the industry is in such safe hands.

I am, of course very grateful to these judges for giving up their invaluable time, and who were set the unenviable task of selecting tonight’s finalists. The finalists, their teams and their establishments also deserve a special thank you for all the preparation and hard work put into the interviews. I hope you found the experience a rewarding and useful process.

This wonderful event would also not be possible without the invaluable support and loyalty of our sponsors, friends and members. We, as an organisation are very proud to be associated

with these very special individuals and companies, and we trust in return that you are equally proud of your association with the Institute.

There is also another group of individuals to which I am indebted for their support and guidance – the committee members. These individuals work tirelessly behind the scenes in the promotion of the positive image of the Institute, not to mention upholding the integrity of these wonderful awards.

Following the backdrop of 2012, and the many events which took place to celebrate the historic significance in Northern Ireland’s history, 2013 is equally set to follow in its footsteps. With events such as The World Police and Fire Games, The G8 Summit, and not to mention Derry/Londonderry’s Year as UK City of Culture, this gives us all an opportunity to promote a positive and everlasting image of what is great about Northern Ireland.

As finalists, you are Northern Ireland’s ambassadors and I for one am extremely proud and honoured to be recognising your talents at this wonderful and auspicious occasion.

I wish each and every one of you the greatest success.

As Chairman of the Institute of Hospitality for Northern Ireland, it gives me great pleasure to formally welcome you to this years 18th Annual Janus Awards for Professionalism.

We sincerely thank all the educational centres for nominating such quality candidates and for their contribution to the development of these young professionals. We look forward to their continued support and to increased participation from centres offering new foundation degree Hospitality Management courses.

Johnsons CoffeeJohnsons have been supplying the local hospitality industry with coffees for 100 years.  While the fourth generation family owned company started selling coffee in 1910, roasting did not commence until 1913, exactly a century ago.  In the pioneering years, the Johnson brothers understood even then the complexity of supplying a quality cup to the consumer, “We realise the responsibility of roasting, we have to father the coffee into every cup” said Robert in 1916.  This same underlying ethos remains today with the Johnsons and more recently Bellagio brands being supported by machinery, barista training, marketing and dedicated account management.  Johnsons Coffee......a world of coffee, locally roasted.

The Welcome Organisation is a charity that works across Belfast, to alleviate the distress and trauma caused by homelessness.

Operational in the city for over 17 years, the Welcome Organisation is recognised and well respected for working with people with chaotic lifestyles, challenging behaviours, dependencies (primarily alcohol) and mental health issues. The people that other services either find it too difficult to, or choose not to work with. The Welcome Organisation’s ethos of providing unconditional care for the vulnerable is based on the premise that those who are the most difficult to work with are often those who need our support most.

The Organisation’s success is based on a pragmatic person centred approach, respecting individual choice and having honest conversations which ensure harm reduction and improved life chances for some of societies most marginalised citizens. Services, which are operational 365 days per year, 16 hours

every day deliver over 25,000 interventions every year to over 1000 vulnerable people. While addressing the trauma of homelessness, the Organisation works in close partnership with the statutory and voluntary sector and contributes significantly to community safety, city life, the local economy and the positive experience for your visitors.

The Welcome Organisation is delighted to be represented here tonight. “A home, a job, a family. It is a simple dream,” Peter.

With your support we can make dreams come true.Sandra Moore, Director of Homelessness Services
