The students will learn that believers can receive crowns at the Judgment Seat ofChrist, which they will then use to worship Christ by laying them at His feet.

1 Corinthians 9:25

For what do believers compete?

Jason had been busy ever since his youth pastors big announcement. The churchwould pay the entire cost to go to camp for any student who was faithful in theirspiritual disciplines through the rest of the year. Jason had earned his full ride tocamp, but he heard that his friend Scott could not afford to go. Scott was the one wholed Jason to Christ. Wanting to do something for Scott in return, he gave Scott thereward he had earnedhis free trip to camp.

Did you know that God has rewards ready for believers? The Bible tells us thoserewards are crownswith each coming as a result of a specific type of service thathonors and pleases God. According to 1 Corinthians 9:25, the crown Christians strivefor is one that will not perish. Believers are encouraged to strive to earn these crownsof reward by pleasing God in their lifetimes, rather than ending up empty-headed atthe Judgment Seat of Christ.

Incorruptible: Incapable of corruption, not subject to decay.

General Lesson Format

Introduction

When you were little kids, how many of your parents used reward charts with littlestickers on them to encourage habits like how to wash your hands before meals, keepyour room clean, or tie your shoes? Isnt it amazing how a simple, inexpensive

sticker can hold so much value and significance to a five-year-old? When you reallystop and think about it, although the sticker was pretty cool, the best part wasknowing that you pleased your parents. That little sticker on the chart stood forsomething. It meant you had made your mom or dad happy by learning what theywere teaching you and obeying them.

God likes to give rewards, too, and they are much more impressive than stickers.

Still, Gods rewards are similar to those given by our parents in that they are awardedfor obedience. God gives crowns to believers as a reward for obeying Him in specificareas of conduct. We may think of these as rewards to honor us for our achievements,but we will see tonight that these rewards are more than that. They give us the joy ofbeing able to offer them back to God as an act of worship.

Verse Scramble/Object Lesson

This evening we are going to explore the Scriptures to learn about the five differentcrowns that obedient children of God can earn. To do that, we are going to play agame called Verse Scramble. In a moment you will be asked to stand and look underthe chairs around you for a Post-it note. On one side of the note you will find the

reference of a verse that we will need to study in order to find out about thesecrowns. If you find a note, please look up that Scripture reference in your Bible andbe ready to read it when we get to your part of the lesson. Now, everyone look underyour chair.

Now that all the notes have been found, please return to your seats and look up yourScripture references in your Bible. While you turn to those passages, please listen toour Scripture memory verse for this lesson (1 Corinthians 9:25, read).

In last weeks lesson we saw that rewards do not come easily. They are not free gifts.They must be earned. An athlete does not earn an award simply for putting on auniform or showing up to practice. He must be diligent, work hard, and endure

difficulties. Just like an athlete endures much to win a prize, so does the Christian.The difference is that the Christians reward lasts forever. In the days of the ancientGrecian games, the athlete who won the race was rewarded with a crown of greenerythat did not last long before withering and decomposing. But the crown that aChristian receives as a reward is very different.

Tonight we will ask and answer three questions about these crowns:First, what crowns are available?Second, how are crowns earned?Third, what will we do with our crowns?

Lets begin by asking

1. What crowns are available?To introduce to you the crowns that are available for you to receive at theJudgment Seat of Christ, several students and leaders are going to take part in arole-play. Watch and listen as the various crowns are given by Christ.

Teachers Note: If you choose not to have someone portray Christ in the role-play,you may simply present the crowns to the students as they are called forward. Havethem wear the crowns until you reach point three of the lesson. Do not have them

read their Scripture passage yet. This part of the lesson is simply to introduce the fivepotential crowns.

Lecture

Now, lets see how the believer earns these crowns according to Scripture. Each hasspecific meaning and significance to the believer and is rewarded on the basis ofGods criteria.

2. How are crowns earned?

a. The incorruptible crown (1 Corinthians 9:24-25have the student who foundthis Post-it note read)

Paul described a prize the Christian strives for as far more valuable than thepine or laurel wreath that the winner of the ancient Greek Olympic gameswore. The incorruptible, or imperishable, crown is one that lasts forever. Togain this crown, the Christian must be temperate, or self-controlled. This is theonly way the believer will be the victor in the battle between the old and newnature, described in Ephesians 4:22-25 (read) and elsewhere. Just like theathlete Paul refers to in 1 Corinthians 9:24, the believer must discipline his lifeto be pleasing to God. He must say no to the temptation to sin, just as theathlete must say no to temptations in his diet and training. Believers wholook to earn this crown must be willing to give up certain things of the worldin order to receive the reward.

Achieving victory will require dedication. In fact, in 1 Corinthians 9:27 (read),Paul spoke of his dedication to discipline his own body so he would avoidlosing his testimony or hindering the work God had called him to. In followingPauls example, believers may need to avoid some things that are consideredgood if we are to be used for Gods best.

Many people today focus on developing healthy lifestyles so they can take careof their physical bodies, even if it takes dedication and hard work. Whiletaking care of ones health is important, instead of focusing so much on bodilyexercise, believers should focus on exercise that leads to godliness (1 Timothy4:7-8read). Godliness will lead to benefits in all areas of life, includingones health.

How disciplined are you? Do you consistently exercise yourself untogodliness? Are the core Christian disciplines of Bible study, a daily quiet time,church attendance, and service part of your everyday life? To earn theincorruptible crown, you must be disciplined.

b. The crown of rejoicing (1 Thessalonians 2:19have the student who foundthis Post-it note read)

This crown will be awarded to those who faithfully participate in evangelism.It is often called the soul-winners crown. When Paul wrote to the Christians inThessalonica, he actually said that they were his glory and his joy (1Thessalonians 2:20). He said his hope, joy, and reward was to meet Christ at

His coming. Paul found great worth in leading the Thessalonians to Christ astheir Savior, and his love for the Thessalonians would be even greater as theygreeted Christ together at His appearing.

It has long been said that there are only two things that will last forever: GodsWord and the souls of men. Christians are wise to invest their lives in thesetwo areas. In Acts 1:8, Jesus called Christians to be witnesses of Himthroughout the entire world. That should be enough reason to share the Gospel,but God gives additional incentive by offering the crown of rejoicing as areward.

Perhaps you have tried to share the Gospel with people before but had either

no results or a bad experience. Keep sharing. God holds you accountable forfaithfully sharing the Gospel, not for the choices others make. You cant makethem believe, but you can keep telling people about Jesus love for them. InMark 1:17, Jesus called the disciples to be made into fishers of men. This isa fitting word picture. You only catch fish by going fishing! Likewise, if youreally want to lead others to Christ, you will need to go fishing for them. Itdoes not happen by accident. Are you a soul-winner?

c. The crown ofrighteousness (2 Timothy 4:8have the student who found thisPost-it note read)

This crown will be awarded to those who wait with excited anticipation andlove for Christs return. This crown represents eternal righteousness won for usby our Savior, Jesus Christ. You see, righteousness is not only the nature of thecrown; it is the source of the crown. No one would love the appearing of Christand look forward to it unless he was living a lifestyle of obedience. Righteousliving provides the confidence necessary for a Christian to look forward toChrists return, rather than dread it.

Are you looking forward to Christs return? Do you want it to happen as soonas possible, or are there some things you want to do and experience beforethen? Your answer to those questions is a good indicator of what kind of lifeyou are living. We all have different things about life that we enjoy, but a good

sign that we are moving toward an obedient lifestyle is how much we lookforward to Christs return. The only thing we should want to do so much thatwe would ask Christ to delay his coming is witness to more people. Such anattitude would be worthy of both the crown of rejoicing and the crown ofrighteousness.

d. The crown oflife (James 1:12have the student who found this Post-it note

read)

This crown will be awarded to those who endure temptation. The wordstemptations, trials, and testingare often used interchangeably in manytranslations, but theres a difference. The Christian life is filled with trials.Some are designed by Satan and permitted by God, like those seen inRevelation 2:10 (read). Why would God allow such a thing? The purpose ofthese trials is to show us how much we really believe. They point us to Godand help us strengthen our faith. We must not fear these trials (Revelation2:10). They are to be endured, which implies a painful survival of the trial thatresults in victory.

Although enduring trials certainly does not sound like a pleasant thing orsomething to look forward to, it is a necessary part of maturing in the faith.When we look at trials the way God does, we will soon find a positiveperspective. Without trials we could not grow in patience (James 1:3). Withouttrials we could not earn the crown of life (James 1:12). Rather than fearing andavoiding trials, we should receive them with joy (James 1:2). Now, thatis adifferent perspective on life! Only one thing could motivate us to receive trialswith joy, and that is a deep, all-consuming love for God.

Are you going through a trial right now? What is your attitude like? Are youfacing it with joy, or are you pouting? Worse yet, are you giving in totemptation? That is what Satan would have you do. But God has allowed these

temptations and trials to come into your life so you can grow in patience andgrow in love. Endure, and earn the crown of life.

e. The crown ofglory (1 Peter 5:1-4have the student who found this Post-itnote read)

This crown is awarded to men who have served faithfully as shepherds of thelocal assembly, the church. The word elderis commonly understood to applyto pastors, in view of their position of leadership in the church and their role asguardians and overseers.

Notice that 1 Peter 5:2-3 tell us some of the leadership requirements to be metin order to earn the crown of glory. The pastor is to be properly motivatedheshould have a loving heart and concern for the members of the church. He isalso to lead with an attitude of humble submission, setting a good example forothers and never taking his position as a symbol or platform of superiority. Aloving, caring pastor who meets the qualifications is certainly a blessing to hiscongregation, and he is deserving of the crown of glory Peter talks about.

God may want to use you as a pastor some day. Now is the time to developcharacter qualities in your life that will make you worthy of receiving thecrown of glory.

Lets close by considering one more factor related to these rewards known ascrowns.

3. What will we do with our crowns?

We now know that believers can be rewarded with specific crowns for specificacts of service to God. But what do Christians do with these crowns, and what istheir real purpose? Perhaps we should look initially at what we will not do withthese crowns.They will not be used for some heavenly fashion show on a golden runway.They will not be symbols of who was the best performer of godly actions and

attitudes on earth.They will not be displayed as status symbols.They will not be thrown in a closet somewhere to be forgotten, like some of your

trophies from Little League.

These crowns carry great significance. They represent honor and glory. Therefore,

they rightly belong to Jesus Christ (Revelation 4:10read). These elders casttheir crowns before the throne of the One Who is worthy to receive honor andglory (Revelation 4:11). Please stand while the youth leader portraying JesusChrist takes His throne.

Those of you wearing the crowns, please come up and demonstrate with yourcrowns what Scripture says the 24 elders do with their crowns.

Teachers Note: The students are to come back up front and place the crowns beforethe throne. They should fall to their knees and bow to the throne and Jesus, as the 24elders do in Revelation 4:10.

Once these crowns have been awarded to the believers for their good works andpure motives, they will then be used for the praise and worship of Jesus Christ.Jesus alone is worthy to receive the glory, honor, and power signified by thesecrowns. That is why they are placed back before Him as He sits on His throne inHeaven. What will Christ do with them then? We cant be certain, becauseScripture does not tell us. But these rewards also imply future responsibilities andprivileges in Heaven. Perhaps Christ will give them back to the servants who justhonored Him. It doesnt really matter that much, because all the honor and all theglory belong to Jesus Christ, the King of Kings and Lord of Lords. What doesmatter is your answer to this question: Will you have any crowns to offer to Christin praise of Who He is, or will you be empty-headed?

ConclusionLets review what weve learned tonight. The incorruptible crown will be awarded tothose who are disciplined and self-controlled in overcoming the old nature. Thecrown of rejoicing will be awarded to those who diligently look to share the Gospelwith lost souls. The crown of righteousness will be awarded to those who awaitChrists return with great anticipation. The crown of life will be awarded to thosewho endure temptations. The crown of glory will be awarded to faithful pastors andteachers. Yet none of them will keep their crowns. Jesus Christ is worthy of ourservice now and our praise in Heaven. Are you living in such a way that you willhave earned crowns to cast at His feet? If not, today would be a great day to start.

Peor an, est cediendo a latentacin? Eso es lo que Satans quiere que usted haga. Pero Dios ha permitido queestas tentaciones y pruebas que entre en tu vida para que pueda crecer en paciencia ycrecer en el amor. Soportar, y ganar la corona de la vida.

Esta corona se concede a los hombres que han servido fielmente como pastores de la

asamblea local, la iglesia. El anciano palabra que comnmente se entiende aplicable alos pastores, en vista de su posicin de liderazgo en la iglesia y su papel comoguardianes y vigilantes.

3. Qu vamos a hacer con nuestras coronas?

Ahora sabemos que los creyentes pueden ser recompensados con coronas especficaspara determinados actos de servicio a Dios. Pero qu es lo que hacen los cristianoscon estas coronas, y cul es su verdadero propsito? Tal vez deberamos mirarinicialmente en lo que no vamos a hacer con estas coronas. No se utilizar para algn desfile de moda celestial en una pista de oro. No sern smbolos de quien era el mejor intrprete de acciones piadosas y lasactitudes de la tierra.

No se mostrarn como smbolos de estatus. No sern lanzados en un armario en alguna parte hay que olvidar, como algunos desus trofeos de la Liga Pequea.

Estas coronas llevar un gran significado. Representan el honor y la gloria. Por lotanto, con razn, pertenecen a Jesucristo (Apocalipsis 4:10-lectura). Estos ancianosechan sus coronas delante del trono de Aquel que es digno de recibir el honor y lagloria (Apocalipsis 4:11). Believers may need to avoid some things that are considered good if we are tobe used for Gods best (1 Corinthians 9:27).

Instead of focusing so much on bodily exercise, believers should focus onexercise that leads to godliness (1 Timothy 4:7-8).

In Acts 1:8, Jesus called Christians to be witnesses of Him throughout the entireworld.

Rather than fearing and avoiding trials, we should receive them with joy (James

1:2).

You are an athlete in a race known as the Christian life. Are you living in such a waythat you will earn one or more of the five possible crowns? Are you disciplined? Areyou witnessing? Do you look forward to meeting Christ in the air as a righteousservant? Are you joyfully enduring temptations? Are you teaching others about theWord of God?
