Ashley Grimes Welcome back! I hope that everyone had a fun, yet relaxing

summer and are ready to start the new school year refreshed and re-energized. Our work begins every day when we walk into our schools developing and implementing a quality program, filled with standards-based instruction and assessments. I would encourage all of us to make each and every lesson in our Health and Physical Education classes a special and unique experience for every student. Ask yourselves, “Would I want to be in my class?”

The effects of the most-recent legislative session will bring major changes to Education. Specific impacts to Health and Physical Education include: addition of 20 minutes of daily recess to all students K-5 and the removal of the Personal Fitness Competency Exam to High School which allows a student to waive the Personal Fitness Exam when participating in two seasons of athletics. It is critical that we as health and physical education professionals continue to advocate for quality programs and communicate that fit students learn better and that Physical Activity IS NOT the same as Physical Education. We should never ever sell ourselves short. We are QUALIFIED professional educators. Avoid statements implying “I’m just the PE teacher”. Be visible: participate in school committees; celebrate successes; and become a well-educated individual within your school community by attending professional conferences and school board meetings. I challenge you to embrace the changes that lie ahead.

I’ve been very fortunate and humbled by the opportunity to serve as your president over the course of the past year. I have had the pleasure to work along with an extraordinary group of individuals on the SHAPE Florida Board of Directors. Thank you to: Dan Drost, Bruce Sheffield, Ashley Riley, Robert Sinibaldi, Kim Gerlich, Carolyn Pratt, Ashley Mahaven, Laurie Cox, Eric Stern, Princy Dorsainvil, Meghan Brock, Nichole Wilder, Jeanne Fifer, Fely Curva, Rhonda Chalmers, Hollie Newnam, and Jim Ewbank. I have learned so much from everyone. Their insights and expertise created an amazing team. The lessons that I have learned will help me to become a better educational leader.

I encourage you to get involved within our organization whether it be serving on a committee, a council, or on the board.

Looking forward, we will be having our annual SHAPE Florida Convention October 19th–2st at the Embassy Suites in Kissimmee again this year. The Theme of this Convention is “Strength in Numbers.” We have an incredible Keynote Speaker, line-up of sessions, collaborative activities and networking experiences for our attendees. Don’t forget about the All-Convention Party Friday Night!! This is a not to miss event! Make sure to stay in the all-suites hotel where you receive free breakfast, a manager’s social at night and room-to-meeting convenience of staying in the convention hotel. Jump Rope & Hoops for Heart

Jeanne FiferJump Coordinator

Carolyn DeebHoops Coordinator

SURPRISESARE IN THE AIR! There will be many surprises in the air this fall in regards to the upcoming year of Jump Rope and Hoops for Heart! The new thank you gifts will have students loving the theme - with cute little critters for everyone to enjoy! The health messages will be ‘on point’ and in line with the goals of the American Heart Association and the American Medical Association. Students will be very excited when they see all that we have to offer them this year - so let’s get started!

Teachers and event coordinatorsWe have three awesome sessions for everyone to attend and learn from at the fall convention. Andy Hanson and Mark Meyers will be presenting a session that will introduce the new themed characters (which you will love) into station activities and lesson plans that you can use in your units. Each one will be linked to standards and benchmarks. These two guys can excite anyone to coordinate a jump or hoops event!

The second session is one that has been asked for by several of you. Teachers and coaches have asked ‘How do we get started in creating a Demo Team for jump rope?’ Ms. Kathy Hatfield, from Fort McCoy Elementary School will be here to help you ‘get it all together’ with some of her jumpers. She will give you tips, trade secrets and lots of needed support to create and establish a demo team for your students. The American Heart Association needs more demonstration teams in this vast state!

The third session will be conducted by a volunteer from the American Heart Association, plus Carolyn and Jeanne. We will be walking you through establishing an ‘on line’ profile and page for your school and the students that participate in the events. We can also show you how to access all of the great teaching aides and materials for classroom teachers as well as event coordinators. Getting those critical health messages out to all students is very important - not just those that are raising funds. These folks will answer questions, help with getting set-up and guide you along the way to a successful event.

Besides the three great sessions described above, there will also be awards for the top schools from the 2016-17 year and a very special recognition. For the first time in many years, there were multiple nominees for the Coordinator of the Year awards. Two very special people have been selected by the committee as the recipients of these awards. Once again, our state has towered above the others and is the #1 state in the South Eastern Affiliate and #4 in the nation in funds raised. Way to go, Florida! As we did last year, there will be a ‘Social Hour’ (invitation only) event, on Friday night, for all Event Coordinators who completed events in the 2016-17 school year. Check the convention program for details on the location and time of that event - just our way to say ‘Thank You’ to all of you!

There has also been a ‘JRFH/HFH Task Force’ established to try to assist you in your endeavors with Jump and Hoops. These members will be meeting at the convention and brain storming more ways to help promote the messages of the American Heart Association and SHAPE Florida. This group will be functioning as an advisory group and you will hear more about that in the months to come.

There are two attachments which will also be available at the convention. The first is a document which you may be interested in viewing, especially if your county is using the Charlotte Danielson Framework for Teaching as an evaluation tool. This document is an alignment of a Hoops for Heart or Jump Rope for Heart program with this teaching model. It is extremely well done and will be used by much of the country this year.

CLICK FOR THE DOCUMENT The second is the application for a SHAPE America JRFH and/or HFH Grant. These grants are awarded for $2500.00. They are to be used for equipment ($1200.00) and personal staff development - attendance at the national SHAPE America Convention ($1300.00) in the spring, in Nashville, TN.

CLICK FOR THE APPLICATIONBoth these documents will be available at the convention. Register for the SHAPE Florida Convention and make sure you receive your free and/or discounted SHAPE Florida membership!

The SHAPE Florida Journal 14

Physical Education Division Ashley RileyVice PresidentQuality Physical Education… There IS Strength in Numbers

Summer has been a time to relax, unwind, learn new things, and enjoy time with friends/families. Now, it’s time to get back in the groove and plan for an amazing year of Physical Education. Whether you are a first year teacher planning for the first time or a twenty year teacher looking to change things up a bit; there are resources, many of which are free, available to help you provide quality learning experiences to your students every time you see them-- whether it is once every 6 days, or every day. Check out our Florida Department of Education’s PE Toolbox (http://www.fldoe.org/core/fileparse.php/12083/urlt/PhysicalEducationToolKit.pdf) to locate resources for PE teachers in Florida: standards, sample lessons, and much more!

Because we have no control over the number of times, or minutes, we see our students; using numbers to motivate students to move when we see them has proven effective to both teachers, and students. • 20 minutes of moderate to vigorous physical activity (MVPA) during PE class. Plan to get students moving quickly. Teach them this is your expectation and plan to help them meet it.• Use dynamic stretching—students can still be in roll lines, they just are in motion• Eliminate waiting in lines- plan for 100% of student engagement• Keep teacher talk to a minimum— give short, sweet, to the point instructions• Utilize student-led warm-up activities where they lead the class, or a small group, in movement activity of their choice while you take care of attendance, etc.

• Track heart rate during activity to increase student motivation. Heart Rate Monitors make this task much easier, but even without them you can still do this. Set a timer to remind yourself to call a heart rate check. Teach students what their target heart rate should be during exercise and how to check their heart rate, have them pause for a heart rate check (easiest way is to time them for 6 seconds and tell them to add a 0). You can even ask them for a thumbs up/ thumbs down to show you if it’s higher or lower than the last time they checked as a means of assessment. At the end of class, this also allows for reflection—did they work their body hard enough today? Can they try harder next time? Should they slow down? • Use pedometers to track number of steps. If you don’t have pedometers, reach out to local doctors or medical places to see if they are able to donate you some. Many kids may have their own step counting devices and may prefer using their own. Challenge your students to get at least 2000 steps during PE—100 steps per minute for 20 minutes.

As the school year starts, I challenge you to be the one. Be the one to try something new that improves the quality of the learning experience for your students—new games, new technology, new class procedure, or a new way of doing something ‘old.’ Be the one to invite a peer to join you October 19-21, 2017 at our SHAPE Florida Convention in Kissimmee. Be the one who strives to make a change to improve the quality of Physical Education for students across our state. Be the one to get involved in SHAPE Florida-- join us at the Physical Education town hall meeting at the Convention as we elect the next members of our various Physical Education Councils. If you are interested in serving, or would like to nominate someone to serve, please email me [email protected]

2) E-Mail the completed form(s) to: [email protected] The $10 payment for each award can be made at the Convention Registration Desk.

3) Attend the Final Session during the Convention and bring along your MARA Award recipient (s) (you don’t have to tell them why…it can be a surprise). If they cannot attend, you can take the certificate with you and present it to your recipient (s) at home, in an assembly, at a meeting, etc.

4) MARA Awards forms must be received by SHAPE Florida no later than October 6th.
