HONOURED SIR,I HOPE you will excuse the

liberty I take in writing to you ; but having writ-ten a few directions and observations for the use ofGentlemen's Servants, I was advised, after lettingsome of my friends see them, to ask you if youthought they might be made useful if publishedMy endeavour has been to promote the comfort ofthose whom I have had the honour to serve, and tobenefit ray fellow-servants. Having been oftenemployed myself in instructing young personswho had never been out in service before, I ima-gined that a set of rules regularly laid down for theuse of domestic servants might be very acceptable,and save a great deal of trouble to such ladies andgentlemen as only keep one footman, and are there-fore obliged, if they happen to engage one who is

VI LETTER TO THE PUBLISHER.ignorant, either to instruct him themselves, orto part with him, even when he may be likely tosuit them very well in the course of a little time.I thought, likewise, that it would be very use-ful to servants who, coming from the country,may not have had an opportunity of improvingthemselves as they might have done in town. Ihave endeavoured to direct those for whose serviceI have written, not only in their business, but theirconduct and principles, and have given them scrip-tural examples respecting their duties, and thepractice of all that is required of them. If you,Sir, approve the design of my work, and will con-descend to become the publisher of it, I hopethat any defects in its style and execution will bekindly overlooked by the public, under the con-sideration that it is the production of one who hasnot had any of the advantages of education, butwho is earnestly desirous of doing all the good thatmay come within his power.
